"K80" ZT - Engine Back In! (23/05)

Post pics of your Fiesta here.

Still no great progress on the engine as yet, it is very slowly moving in the right direction though. In the meantime, I moved the rear end over and a new tailgate. You get a sense of deja vu that's for sure.

There's a plate welded over from the inside, the marks are from the welder

A little more progress, nothing really visual at the moment though. The 5dr has now GONE

Cylinder head's just gone off to be cleaned out and fitted with new area-six valve springs, new seals and skimmed a little to get the compression ratio right.

In the meantime I've collected more parts including a Zetec-S rear beam, new pumps and engine mounts.

A few new pics anyway, nothing spectacular as of yet...

Oil return hose, albeit tight, should be ok:

All the electrics from the previous car are wired in and functioning now:

Various smaller collected items:
Image

Nissan or Subaru injectors, should allow me to keep the standard Zetec inlet manifold. Will probably require upgrading the fuel pressure regulator.

Nissan injectors are 370cc (purple) and the Subaru's are 440cc (yellow)
Image

I am curious though as to what this pin in the centre is for? From what I could see it seems to just be a seating guide pin but then there's 2 holes in the side of the injector just below which also expose the pin....

Hopefully the updates will start coming thick and fast in the new year

Does the pin pull out at all? I can't think what it's for, because I know that subaru's have retainer caps on them.

Yeah, the caps have small rubbers in that slot around the pin presumably to seat it correctly, exactly same with the Nissan versions. What's thrown me though are the 2 small holes just below on the sides.

I've seen them holes on a lot of injectors over the years, I think it's just a standard thing. Of course it must serve some sort of purpose, but I can't think what it is lol.

Cheers dude :D

So, this weekend saw the return of the cylinder head, front engine mount bracket welded in and fitment of the Zetec-S Rear axle.

The pistons in the block lowered the compression more than anticipated so the head was skimmed 0.75mm (ish), leaving the compression ratio at a very nice 8.4:1. Area-Six valve springs fitted along with fresh stem seals.

Complete Zetec-S polybushed beam. My original handbrake cable was a direct fit, so a heads up for anyone else wanting to do the mod, get a very late mk3.5 cable! Mk4/5/Puma goodridge hoses fitted too.

And finally, the bracket for the front engine mount got welded in today, no pics yet cos it's a bit messy, Arc-welded in  Also started work on changing the master cylinder, 2 of the lines are having the top connector changed this week.

Don't need discs on a fiesta. They ain't even needed on a 1.6 focus
You only get discs on a 1.8 & 2.0 focus

Drums with properly adjusted shoes are more than enough.
Remember at one time cars used to have drums all round

Most of the weight is at the front, it needs to do most of the braking, the 'diving' your complaining about is nothing bad. Yes you could increase the braking at the rear but without sufficient weight will lock up.

Drums are staying regardless, the whole system performed admirably several times around track so why bother messing with it? :)

Also, the rear discs on my 306 have caused me no end of trouble this year!

Unhappy times if you have to brake harshly mid-bend (badger / fox / jogger in middle of road, inconsiderate baxtered that they are), the back end goes light because of the weight transfer and the back of the car is suddenly heading toward a hedge because the increase in rear braking efficiency caused the rear tyres to break traction.

Actually no, scrub that, go for it, sounds like fun. :D

PS Sorry Tweek :bonkers:

jonyb4 :haha

so what same 280s for even over 200break?

The rover produces (guessing) around 200hp and 220lb/ft - it has 260mm vented single pots up front, 240mm solid out back and they're perfectly adequate for road use.

The golf has 256mm 4 pot wilwoods out front and while I can get them to fade (mintex 1155 pads) it takes a lot of effort on roads I'm intimately familiar with. The golf in factory trim is about 112hp (from memory).

It's not what you have, but how you use it. Too much store is put in big brakes and fancy brake compounds by people who will never, ever really exploit them - it's just pub / car park bragging rights for many. :)
