The M3 arch looks surprisingly un-angular on there doesn't it?
I'm sure it could be going back to 2006 you got those. It seemed it'd be hard to have something so exaggerated mated to the Mk3 bodywork without it looking a bit "Mk6 Fiesta RS Concept", but that looks fairly subdued, refreshingly. I'd love to see it welded, filled and in primer

More progress.
I added bracing to the front area so the shell retains its integrity when I remove the front end. I also made a frame for the shell to sit on once the front is removed:

Removed my outer wings and seam sealer around A pillar:

Removed the inner wing outer sections (I'm keeping these to help me align the Mk3 bonnet on to the Mk5 inner wings):

what will you be doing with the mounting that you made for the black top on the drivers side on the old section?
will you be reusing that or is it going to be scrap?
If you are going to reuse it any chance of getting some decent pics of it please and sort of rough measurement?
would be a lifesaver if you could!

I can't say if it will suit your particular installation - but it'll be damn close. I'll cut it out and send it to you if you cover my costs

Bit of a shame to see a front end as tidy as The Flying Log's sitting on the ground, hacked up like that..but the associated 45kg weight loss makes up for it I suppose. I bet that was a touch scary! Was there any hint of a "twang" when you zipped through it all, with the shell relaxing to its own natural shape?

450 genuine HP is what I want, it will be in keeping wit the handling/grip that I intend to achieve with this work. The track will be 75mm wider than a standard Fiesta - both front and rear. Front is FRP stuff as stated, rear will be Mondeo 4x4 hubs and custom arms. As for the struts I don't know yet. I'd like to run racing Puma front struts at the rear too but this will depend if KW will sell me a set of 4 front dampers (I don't want to spend 2k on suspension only to throw half of it away). Initially for a road test it will be built with RS2000 4x4 rear struts.

I would have thaught KW will have no problems sorting you out with 4 front shocks as I would imagine you can buy them individually.

I doubt it would need an SVA and would just carry on with the mk3 identity.

To be honest, with it having some major structural modifcations it would have to go through something a bit more scrutinous than just an mot, although i know they are by no means just a look and done job.

if it's registered already then it doesn't need to go through an SVA. I can see where you're coming from though, it has had a lot of structural work which would justify one.

he has
edit: i was only just suggesting that the amount of work he has done on this one pretty much counts as a new car as there isnt going to be very much left on it from its original factory state.

If Mark has as much knowlage as the people who would be testing the structure of the car for safety then there is no need for it to be tested as he can decide as well as they can if it is safe or not. there is no legal need for it to go through an sva so there is no need IMO.
What car did you design from scratch Mark???

Re: Mk3.5 ST170 Turbo 4x4 (Quattro) project...Update 02/03/2008
Oliie, I haven't designed anything from scratch. I'm using Ford components in the structure which are obviously all tested. In fact there are a couple of extra additions in the Mk3.5 shell that the Mk5 doesn't have - so I'm going to use this to get the best of both worlds. I've really learnt about Fiesta construction from this build, and its really taught me the critical areas of the car, and how and where collision forces are distributed through the rest of the shell.
As as result of what I've seen, the A pillars will be spot welded, and fully seam welded - not just at regular intervals.
The end result will be far safer than any production Mk3/3.5/4/5
