Wireless help please

Postby KEVFRST on Sat Oct 18, 2008 8:32 pm

It seemed like a good idea today, to get access to FT.com whilst in bed. So I bought a wireless router from PC World. Its aBelkin G plus MIMO whatever that means. Anyways, I went to connect it as per the install disc and came across 1 small but rather important problem........ My Tiscali broadband comes via the modem which in turn connects to the desktop via a USB, but the router wants a cat 5 input. What do I do?

Have I bought the wrong router?
Is my Modem s**t?
What is ethernet as Ive got a socket on tower which looks to be what I need to connect into after the yellow cable comes out of the router?

Im sure some clever FTer will be able to help me.

Thanks
Kev.

If the router wants a cat 5 input you've probably bought a Cable router rather than an ADSL one. Doesn't suprise me with PC World, they couldn't tell their arse from their elbow rather than label these things up properly. In fact I remember seeing a billboard up above the routers section and it mentioned Tiscali as a Cable broadband provider.

You'll have to take it back, get an ADSL one instead, connect that directly to the phone line (bypass modem altogether), then follow the install disc to set up your Tiscali account details.

Ethernet is a normal network cable.

If you're doing what I think your doing (one desktop and one laptop), you hook up your router directly to the phone line, then a network cable between your PC and the router, use your PC to set up the router, then use the wireless settings given to you from the install CD to connect the laptop. You won't need the modem and the internet will be always on, without needing to be "dialled up".

I hope that helps, I'm trying to put it fairly simply at a godforsaken hour of the morning
