USB Ethernet adapter.

Postby ~nomad~ on Sat Mar 13, 2010 7:46 pm

Anyone used one of these? The onboard network adapter in my PC is dying, and I don't have a free pci slot so been looking at these. Am I right in thinking they work the same as a normal network card?

Yeah, they do work fine. They appear in Network Connections the same as a PCI card. They're not ideal, you won't get a massive throughput however it will still perform faster than most UK internet connections :)

I had to install one at a customers house a few weeks back to get her back online, worked a charm.

If you do lots of LAN file sharing then a PCI adaptor is preferable, but if its just browsing the internet the USB one will work fine.

Hope that helps?

I don't do a lot of actual moving files, but I do stream video a fair bit. Any good?

I dont suppose you can recommend a dirt cheap sound card that works with windows 7? my shuttles onboard sound will not work with it :(

Anything recent by Creative should be good for 7, however I'm just using my onboard Realtek HD audio.

It should be OK for streaming video but it all depends on what is being streamed. Best bet is to see if you can find someone who has one to borrow it and see how it fares. If I still had mine I'd let you have it!

Assuming you mean streaming from the net, a USB2 ethernet adaptor will be fine. They're 10/100Mbps adaptors (i.e. not gigabit) because USB2 can only support up to 480Mbps. Well in excess of any domestic broadband connection speed.

I've got two at work.

What Shuttle have you got? Windows selected the wrong output as the default on mine.

cant remember the model name, I bought a soundcard today but would prefer to get the onboard working. How do I change the output?

Right click on the speaker in the taskbar and go to playback devices. Mine had selected the digital output on the front as the default instead of the speakers.

That's assuming it's actually installed the drivers for your sound card.

Should be a serial number and barcode on the underside of it. The first few digits (along the lines of SS51G) is the model number :)

If not, the mainboard model can usually tell you what the model is. My prehistoric SK41G for example, has an FX41 motherboard in it.

It'll be written on the board somewhere, or I think Belarc can tell you what it is.

It probably has Realtek audio, most do, if so download the drivers from Major Geeks (Realtek's site is fudgekin slow).

Yup was realtec, got the sound working now, apperantly the onboard network hates 7 as much as Vista did, so I think I need to just chuck a card in, now I dont need the space for a soundcard

You sure it's not just a driver issue again? The drivers that Windows installs may not work but the ones from the manufacturer might.

Could be Realtek, Marvell or VIA depending on what model it is.

f**k knows, it randomly loses connection a couple times a day, and requires a restart to sort it.

Does it lose it completely, as in, it says the cable has been unplugged, or does it just lose data connectivity, can't ping another machine, yellow triangle?

What have you done so far to troubleshoot it?

Have you tried another machine with the same cable in the same port on your router?
