Tuning Fiesta's
44 posts • Page 1 of 2 • 1, 2
has anybody used cossie management on the Fiesta? was it difficult to set up? what about heads and cams, a friend that used to work at turbosystems reckons that it increases turbo lag, True/False. does it rev better at the top end cos it's a real pisser watching the rev counter going so slowly, and what about chips i've been told by a well know tuning company that 195 Superchips are "dangerous" and fuel consumtion goes through the roof? (not bothered) with beige injectors. true/false? what power would be expected cos i am dissapointed with the 165 chip i've got 178bhp with the same torque from about 2000/2500 rpm up to 5,500 rpm at Power engineering. who's changed to the T3 turbo is it worth it?

Jason Lorenzo Franco,

4,000-4,500????????????? somethings wrong there then!!!!!!!! Castle Performance offer a similar conversion and it produces 240bhp, so if your running all those mods and still not that near to 230bhp even, summats not right!!!!!!!!! on an Escort turbo the T3 cuts in at bout 3,000 revs, if yours is cutting in that late, you only got 2,000 revs before engine cuts!!!!!! Take it to a rolling road and have them check the boost, actuator, fueling etc cos sounds like youve got a lot of power not yet been unleashed! Also, check out my web page for information on the 240bhp conversion Castle Performance do for the Fiesta and tick off how many mods you've got the same/similar and count how many horses less you have lost somewhere! http://www.castleperformance.co.uk

Andy,
I got 162bhp out of a 165 superchip!?!
I gave Ahmed Bayjoo a call about a chip and they said they no longer did chip's for the Fester 'cos he had far too many problems with them?, what rolling road did your car roll 192bhp on and what psi was your car set up at and did you have to use a uprated actuator?
Paul R

Jason,

Im running 192bhp without hardly and mods to my car!!!!!!!! purely cos of the Ahmed Bayjoo chip!!!!! Ahmed is considered to be the best in the business and anyone who changes their superchip to an ahmed will instantly notice the difference!

Superchips brought out a 165 and 195 chip. The 165 was really bout 140, and the 195 bout 165!!!!!!!!! Reason? Superchips have a default tuning chip that they alter per car. not good! Ahmed created his chips from scratch by sitting in the passenger seat of fiesta rst for example while colleague drove it round for a week. ahmed had laptop on knee and connected to his chip in the ECU. He basically adjusted the chip while it was on the road from feedback from his colleague as to flatspots and lag etc, and this is how come Ahmeds chips are guaranteed what they say they are power wise! Also, at 4,000 revs, ya feel another pickup of power!!!!!!!!!!!! sorted!!!!!

OFAB and OFAC are the different types of management the fiesta uses. OFAB is the better of the two.

FesterRS: I think he's indian. There was a piccy of him in Performance Ford not long ago as they did a feature on him as he is well known in the rally industry for BIG bhp cosworths.

Paul R: Phone Castle Performance on 01782 715006 and ask them about reliability of Ahmeds chips and availability, or go to Tyron Barrett's webpage at http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/8129/ and James Wheelers webpage at http://www.fiestas.mcmail.com and see what these guys think. Heres an extract from Ty's:
"Having researched the chip market, and seen many of my friends' cars blown to smithereens by their supposed '195bhp' SuperChips conversions, I opted for Ahmed Bayjoo's phase 1, priced at £350. Fitted at their workshop in Romford in Essex, the whole conversion took approximately 2-3 hours to complete. Changes include new platinum spark plugs, an uprated actuator, remapped ECU (plug-in board type), and various tuning tweaks combined with road tests to get the car running perfectly.

You will, however, have to switch to using 'super unleaded' type petrol to avoid detonation when running at full boost. Ahmed is currently looking into producing a modified chip for those still wishing to use normal unleaded petrol, albeit running at reduced power.

Ahmed claims about 165bhp should be achievable from this setup. Although this may seem a little low by most tuners standards, I can confirm that the car now easily keeps up with just about every other Fiesta Turbo I've come up against, barring a couple of examples where the owners had spent thousands on their engines (and they didn't get away easily!) I'm due to have the car's output measured fairly shortly and will place the outcome on this page in due course.

More encouraging is the reliability of the conversion. Since fitting, I've covered over 10000 miles with very little in the way of problems (other than lunching the gearbox due to the increased power!). The engine has now done in excess of 90000 miles all on the original turbo!"

Im still running standard injectors, but the fuel pressure was increased by Castle Performance who have set the car up along with the guys at the K&N Research and Development Centre.

Well, there's quite a discussion going on here, and it'd be rude not to put my twopenneth in!!

I talk to Ahmed on a fairly regular basis, and was not aware of him stopped FRST chips, but will ask him for you, and get a definitive answer. Sure, he can appear arrogant, but when you are at his level professionally, the questions most people ask him try his patience. If you want the best, go see him, money at the ready, listen to what he has to say, and let him get on with it. If you're after more details about the man himself, see my website - http://www.fiestas.mcmail.com/ab.html
Theses pages were sanctioned by Ahmed himself, who proof-read the lot, and will include feature work at a later date. His phone/email details are there too.

For the record, the OFAC is the better of the OFAB/OFAC FRST ECUs since it uses an improved MAP sensor. The OFAB system uses the old Weber/Marelli style one. 80% of FRSTs run an OFAB system, but the last batch (1991) ran the improved system. The only difference is the ECU/MAP sensor.

Superchips - oh what fun I ran a 195 chip, which overfuelled at the top end (to prevent detonation) and then bore-washed the pistons, knackering the piston rings in a very short space of time. With the car totally std, it produced 167bhp and 192 lb/ft torque. It was fun for a while, but not very kind to the engine. Ahmed's 170 chip is way, way superior and an awesome (and reliable) package for £400!

Cossie management - not really worthwhile, if you ask me (on a FRST anyway). A lot of ERST owners use it as the KE-Jetronic system they have is woefully inadequate in comparison. There's a LOT of work involved, and the FRST EECIV is close enough performance-wise for it not to be worth bothering with. If you want +30bhp, then look at a Pectel T2 system, around £1500 all in I think. The Pectel is fully adjustable/mappable and will squeeze every last ounce of power from an engine.

Cams - almost all the cams for the FRST are useless, period! Most are designed for old mechanical injection (K-Jetronic) XR3i CVHS - Kent CVH31/33/35, Piper 270/285 etc. and as such don't deliver the good in an XR2i, let alone a FRST (where cam profiles are very important). Ahmed reckons that the std cam is superb, so change it at your peril!! There are two exceptions....Piper 285T2, which isn't bad (but is more suited to 1900s), and Ahmed's own hybrid cam. I've just had the latter fitted, and the difference is amazing. Loads more top end power, v.v.smooth, increased top end rev range. It was the result of some serious development and it shows.

That's all folks......for now!

James

[Edited by JJ (18-08-2000 at 01:02 PM).]

Paul R,

this is true mate, but as said, Ahmed and Superchips both used to have a 195 and a 165 chip. The Superchips 195 was really more like a 165, and the 165 was more like a 145 drivability chip. Ahmed binned the 165 and instead, renamed the 195 to 175 so that if anything, he was completely accurate or UNDERstated, but not overstated. The 165 you have got that produces 162 will really have been the 195 chip! Remember, although very little mods, there are subtle differences! Im not just running any old stainless, im running Mongooses EVOLUTION _3"_ bore system with 4" tailpipe, but also _3"_ stainless turbo downpipe which most exhausts dont have (think this is the same exhaust as on James Merritts of http://www.rs-turbo.co.uk fame! Also, Ive had the K&N57i pro fitted by K&N themselves, and left with them for half a day to tune on a £20,000+ dyno, not just left for an hour on a rolling road! My car is also ALWAYS full of SUPER unleaded petrol which burns cooler in the piston and better and more reliably than normal unleaded, and also, on the dyno test, i was running 16.5psi boost! As for the chip, it came with -31 actuator, Escort Cosworth platinum plugs and the chip itself custom programmed by Ahmed, this alone cost me £600 from Castle, and that was with labour knocked off!!!!!!!! The equivalent Superchip was £350, so you can see for the extra money involved, Ahmeds chips have got to be far superior which they are!!!!!! forget all this cams, gas flowed headwork and stuff and think in PC terms!!!!!! If you change your graphics card for a voodoo 3 card, still no use if you are still running a P200!!!!! the heart of all computers/systems is the central processor/chip, get this sorted and you are on a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!

JJ so thats why you were trying to sell that 195 chip and injectors to me you sneaky git!
As far as the cams go I thought the Kent 35K was very good my mate has the same set up as me (S/S, K&N, 165 superchip) and he rolled 185bhp which is not bad from 12-13psi!
I've just had one fitted and car the pulls so much better and runs a lot smoother and seems to carry on after you let go of the thottle instead of dieing. Paul R,

JJ is right in what he says and the price he quoted is from Ahmed himself who sells to the public the same price as he sells to traders, thats why it cost me £600 (with discount) from Castle Performance, and the equivalent Superchips I could have had was for £350!!!!!!! I spoke to Mark at Castle P last night who said he not heard the rumour bout Ahmeds chips stopping, not had any problems with any of them, and only yesterday fitted one to an original superchip owner who couldnt believe the difference in power!!!!!!!!!! think about fitting a P120 chip in ya motherboard where the P33 used to be and you will get the picture!
