clark is a jinx, it rained the day we started and stopped the day after he left , every time i looked away he grabbed a wipeand started cleaning something
still it was easy done, few bits gave a bit of a fight, and captin clark and his christmas long bar didnt help when trying to undo things ,it was a shame we couldnt really road test it as such before he went back as a couple things needed minor adjustment, which clark had now done.
there was other things done too, like new shock top mounts (rubber donuts) different gear selector fitted and the first day he got here when we were ment to start on it i was still working on my xr2 so we lost a day there but still, its done and working fine.

the water cooling on the turbo nearly didnt happen, i made up a new water pipe for it which was the long one and my dad brazed it in as the steel one was shot, and clark managed to kink the other when fitting the rubber pipe and it split, but it looks like it had been a bit kinked before so was a bit soft anyway, so i made a new one up in a different shape (which fits much better) at the last min and again my dad brazed it in.

brings back memories of when i first started my rebuild, although the plastic had been cut down just before the pic as clark was leaving for home.

ok to start -

feersum enjin - yea the stage 1 T3 was a gooden after all, and yes the water pipes were custom made as the original steel ones were no good.

Henry - yes new shocks are on the cards, im fed up with catching my exhaust on london speed bumps. Standard setup will be going on over my current coilovers.

Black2 - unfortunatly the rad had to make a move forward by around 30 mm on the passenger side, i will show detailed pics in the guide. I used a screw on the slam pannel brace to hold the bottom of the rad forward and a big cable tie on the intercooler.

bakewell - im over the moon now my engine dont leak oil all over the road . Turbo wise. i have lost the nippyness of a t2 but gained the top end power a t3 has to offer. im only running 7 psi at the moment as it will need setting up again once beiges and chip have been sourced. On the motorway is where i love the t3 the most. i can now cruise at 60 mph at 2500rpm. The t2 would normally be knocking its socks off on long motorway journeys.

turboboy - we didnt take our time , we worked are socks off and rain spoiled all are plans. and no i cant leave gav yet, give it time though Gav was so jealous as mine is more (insert ghey rap term)

when i last spoke to clark from the sounds of it it sounds like the seal is letting but a bit, but the turbo hasnt fully gone.
this could be a breather problem though as the turbo was fine on the first start up, and was fine on the run home and for a few days since fitting it, ive not spoke to him in about 4 days so i dunno if its still looking grim?

the damage to the compressor wheel wouldnt effect the oil seal, and it didnt suck in any kids on start up so all was well.

its the problem you get with ebay / s/h unknown turbos

its smoking like a chimney, constantly smells of oil whilst i kill the person behind me with blue smoke.

Been quoted £95 if its just oil seals. or £215 to do all bearings/gaskets/oil seals.

either that or a new T3 unit off the shelf for £440 without postage or vat

the shaft and compressor wheel are balanced together, and then marked, when they are fitted back into the turbo the marks are lined up and then its in balance again.

turbo companys prob do this with some auto machine or something but as a engineer i would and have done it with knife edges (not cutting knifes, its a engineers tools) but if you mark the shaft and the wheel before you take it apart and put it back as it should the balance wouldnt and shouldnt of shifted.
when balancing the wheel on the shaft tiny amounts are removed from the wheel to get it in balance with the shaft.

not everyone can of course do this without the right stuff, but for a DIYer to do there own turbo marking the shaft and setting it back to them marks is the only way.

but like everything, its not a 100% fix, it may last it may not, things to consider when doing your own turbo is has the oil seal groove worn? meaning a larger seal is needed, has the shaft suffered damage, and like the compressor wheels, damage to this and bent fins can shift the balance, and depending on the amount of damage to the compressor wheel it may need to be replaced, so sometime a home rebuild isnt always worth it, but i thought i would state a home rebuild can be done, if it were my turbo, considering the equipment i have i would and have rebuilt my own.
and i know a company over here that make the compressor wheels for different size and make of turbos so getting a replacment wheel is just a phone call and a pint away
