update time again.

today i had to help my dad for a couple of hours, but he gave me a hand today too, so got a fair bit done-ish

todays work consited of the reinforcer repair, which took longer than i expected, but while i was doing that, my dad removed the door skin from the drivers door.
i gotta say, i didnt expect so many spot welds as well as the skin to be bonded on  so as it turns out, i didnt have anything to bond it back on with, so the new skin wasnt fitted today.
before my dad left he removed the seam sealant that was effect by the stone chip on the back panel.
it wasnt as much as whats been removed but no matter, i put new sealer over it before i went home, no pic of it as i didnt really see much point

Image

after gaining access to the electric window, the problem as to why it wouldnt work was clear to see....... it wasnt connected to the car :bonkers:

enough fcuking about, here the other pic :bonkers:

Image
anyway, the front end was chopped off today, bar the upper passanger wing lip, ive left that on to use as a datum when i line the new front end up, once its been lined up and tacked, ill remove that lip and fit the passanger wing.

Image
Image

i cracked on with the reinforcer today, done it differently to what i was going to, it doesnt look the same as the std one which is a shame, but its better that what was there, or not there as the case was

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

this is how std one looks, not that different to make much difference i dont think
Image
Image
Image
Image

also, a couple pics of that boot sill lip painted that i forgot to get the other day for anyone interested.

Image
Image

im very tempted to prime this engine bay before the new front end goes on, i wouldnt mind painting it too tbh, then using the touch up gun on the couple of areas that will be spot welded.., ill check access tomorrow, see if i can get the spot welded into where it needs to be, other wise thats out the window

some random pics

forgot to say, i didnt paint the rear turrets today for 2 reason, 1, after doing so much grinding etc in the workshop today, i didnt want dust settling in fresh paint, and 2, last night i bought a mini spray gun on ebay, so wanna use that on them, its a shame to put white paint though it first, it should be red, but beggers cant be choosers and all that

cheers dude, im pleased with how it came out.
ive wiped a smear of seam sealant across the front and back of the welds i couldnt get to with the grinder after i primed it, but its hardly anything, just what i had left on my finger after doing the back panel, but thats it, im not even going to skim it or anything.

was good to have my old man there today, he couldnt do too much as he hurt he back moving a flag stone the other day, but just having someone to talk to is enough, well, between 2 grinders going for it

todays small update.

fitted the door skin.
between me and my dad, we fitted the door skin, me nor my old man has ever fitted a door skin before, so we both wanted a pop at it  and im glad he was there, it would of been a nightmare trying to hold the door right while doing the edge, which i will add was done with a panel hammer and dolly not a skinning tool, reason being, although my dads never done a door skin, he does have a tool, but it would of taken a day to find it, so gave that a miss

the skin was bonded back on as well, used ford windscreen adhesive in the end, i had a new tube of it, and if it can stick a windscreen to metal, then its sure as hell gunna bond 2 bits of sheel metal together, even though the edges were folder over.
a few welds were placed along the front and back edges also, as well as behind the mirror plate as normal, and the door was bunged back on the car for the next stage which i personally have been looking forward to for a long time, cutting that fcuked inner wing off

Image
Image
Image

and here it is, i marked where the new ones going and cut it about 10mm forward of the mark, and the front end was offered up and clamped in place to ensure it was following the wing curve correctly.
nothings been welded, as im going to bolt up a bonnet also to ensure everything is where it should be, then it will be tacked and double checked before final welding.
i would liked to of done that today, but time was running out as i had to collect my daughter from horse riding, and its not something i want to rush without being 100% sure its where it should, so wasnt worth doing it today just for the sake of 'getting it done'.

Image
Image
Image
Image

i also knocked this up quickly today, bought a hook type thing from B&Q's bargain reduced bit for £1.50 the other day purly for the 2 hooks, as i knew they would fit the spray guns fine, and this is the result, no more worrying about where to put the gun, or clamping it in the vice to fill the fcuker up  just need to make the ring bit up which will fit on top for the paint filters and its done, ill do that while having a fag next week

Image
Image

i know you can buy spray gun holders, but you should all know that i would sooner make something and save the money than buy a ready made one, hell i even pulled a trolly into my garden the other month which was left across the road and done this

Image

put the trolly back after  , and some kid got confussed as to where the pound had gone, almost felt bad as he was gunna take it back just for the pound  bad luck sucker, be quicker next time

next update next week somewhen i hope

cheers dude, im not evil  well maybe a little :bonkers:

i am pushing this forward as quick as i can, as i decided a while ago, that i would wrap it up mid oct, until sping time, basicly due to the temp in the workshop, but its getting cold in there now, to the point i can feel the chill (12-14 degrees) and its not really the sort of temps i wanna be painting in, and deffo not if it drops any lower thats for sure, but ill get as much done as i can until mid oct, or until such time as the temp is too cold to work/paint in.
unless another form of heating is sorced which will work with painting, as in, be good enough to get the car upto temp as well as the surrounding area, then i may work on past that.

but once the main body is done, painting the remaining panels like doors, bonnet, body skirt etc, is easier, if needbe, i can knock up a small enclosed booth, and pump hot air thought a filter to warm it up, then paint the bits, 1 at a time if i have to, but its the main body of the car i want done asap, cos once thats done, even if its a bit chilled, i can at least start to built the car back up with engine, box, dash etc

as for the door skin though, i gotta say, for our first door skin it wasnt to bad considering.
as for uphill swage line, i dont think that would of even been poss on this one, the frame fitted the skin so tightly (and in all the right places) even without bonding, or folding the edge, you wouldnt of twisted the skin to alter a swage line angle  .

welding was ok too, as i couldnt get my spot welder in the gap (which is behind mirror) i punched some holes before fitting the skin, and plug welded it there, then just tacked it on the lip edge along the A and B piller edges, with a couple extra along the lip where the door lock is

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 24/9

Postby jayrs on Wed Sep 26, 2012 12:26 am

todays update is short and sweet.
i finished preping the engine bay, due to the weather my dad couldnt do what he wanted to do, so he came up and gave me a hand rubbing the bay down, i rememebred what it was like when i done mine, and although mine didnt need as much attention as this one, i still didnt like that one, and this one, well, it had hours of prep work put into it

anyhow, stone chipped the front arches and inner wings (inside wheel well side) and stone chipped the front reinforcer.
i used the whole 1litre of grey stone chip before i got to the reinforcer, and the end parts of the inner wings, so was forced to open up a black stone chip to finish the job.
these stone chipped areas will be primed before paint, so the colour isnt important, but the stone chipped i used today was 100 times better than that white crap i used on the back panel  , dont get me wrong, now the back panel is dry its fine, but it was $hit putting it on.

i also primed the engine bay, gave it a couple of coats, so its all good, and will require just a quick nib off before paint, but it will be seam sealed before paint.

talking of paint, clark ordered the paint today, and it will be posted to me wed/thurs along with some seam sealant, so until i get it, no more updates.

well, maybe a little one, maybe..... i bought home, home work  2 rear arches to restud, so ill do them some point over next couple of days.

some pics from today, it looks a bit messy due to the black and grey stone chipped used, but remember its going to be primed over, and any tabs you see is areas ive masked off which will be where i spot weld, and there be primed with weld through primer, then seam sealed and touched in when the front panel is on.

It will be a exspensive layout for the paint but it will be worth it for the end result. If you skimp on the quality of the paint then I don't need to tell you how the finish will come out.
Hence why I went to the best place for paint and bought one of the well known brands.

To spray the car I went for 4 litres of diamond white & 2.5 litre container of fast hardener.
I may be left with some left over but better that then run out half way through painting. Which means mixing more up which may be different batch & different colour !
