I've also had a rethink as to what im gunna do next, so its gunna stay on the spit for a little longer now while ill prep the sunroof aperture and re seam seal it, as well a couple other bits in the engine bay which will be easier while still on the spit

danny, the replacement front arches (body kit) are red, so might just leave them red :lol: come to think of it, the replacment spolier is red too :aaah: :lol:
that reminds me, gotta get some sealer coat for that


done a bit more today, filled and smoothed off the join between the A pillar and the scuttle, noticed too, unless its just me, that the radius on the mk5 scuttle is a little different to the mk3 one :-? , so was a bit of a 'huh wtf' moment when it came to blending the radius in with the A piller :lol: both sides are done and primed, and i think it looks alright, but ill see what it looks like when i offer a wing up and check it against the curve of the back of the wing, if it needs a bit of adjustment to the shape, ill do it, once im happy with it, i can paint some white paint over that area before the wing is fitted.

preped up the sunroof aperture and seam sealed it with some decent stuff this time (ford seam sealant) not that crap tape stuff they used.
i had to smooth it out with a finger as i couldnt get a steady line, and i wanted to make sure it was fully sealing the join, so it looks a bit rough which im not happy about, but better that than a gap and it trapping water and rooting the roof.


sorted the white over spray and a couple of thin bits i couldnt get right into on the underside also today, but had to have a short day today so thats all i done, but just preping the sunroof aperture took a while getting the surface rust off by hand :lol: then waiting for the kill rust to dry etc

i also decided last night im going to do an extra,... clark didnt ask me to do this (yet :lol: ) but it bugs me everytime i look at it, and its a bit on the front reinforcer thats been cut out and fiberglassed over, to allow room for a intercooler pipe from the looks of it, so im gunna cut that section out, make up a new bit with the opening so the intercooler has a hole to sit its peg in.
i cant be arsed going to the scrapy and removing all the crap from a car and cutting a small section out, and thats if theres a mk3/3.5 in there..., so its quicker and easier to just make my own bit up, pics will follow if how it is now when i get some, and when its done, but this is the area ive gotta repair

i also gave this area a quick couple of coats of white while doing the inside yesterday, that way when painting the car, any bits within the gap (when the wings fitted) wont be left black.

at this point, some of you will notice that the sill lip has has a light coat of spray sealant and stone chiped, and this is the area where the bottom of the wing is spot welded to the lip, so you might be wondering why i done it.
well the reason is, im going to pop rivet the bottom of the wing on.
i said to clark about it the other week and we agreed on it, 2 main reasons being, there will be no bare metel (or weld through primed metal) sat right where it gets the most water that runs off the arch liner, and second, i could complete the floor and sill lip with the 3M sealant while doing the floor.
i will use stainless steel pop rivets and ill seam seal over the top and bottom of it then touch it in with some black on the underside, and paint over the head when i do the wing.

anyway, thats it for today, didnt get any pics of the sunroof area, we all know what it looks like and what a fcuker it is, more so when it comes to painting :lol:

Great work.

See you keep saying you wouldnt do another, but you have a clear talent for it, and have a workshop. So why not start up doing restoration work? Could be a good earner for you. :)

nomad, i have thought about, but on the isle of wight, i dont think it would make enough to be worth it.
small repairs etc prob yeah, i have even thought about buying salvage cars and repairing them, but the main problem is heat, even now its getting chilly in the workshop and the time for painting is fast going.
further to that, if i could do all the work, then someone else paint it, that would be fine :lol: :lol: but in the winter, even with a space heater going it will do 16-18 degrees at best, turn it off, and your feeling cold again within 20 mins, maybe sooner, hence why i dont go out there in the winter, or avoid it as much as poss :lol:
i should point out now though, if the area where the workshop is had mains gas, then i would have heating in there, but its calor gas or oil, and thats expensive

also, the workshop aint mine, it belongs to my aunt and uncle, and is basicly the garage to the house they own, although there fine with me using it for what ever i want, for how ever long i want, there pensioners now, and live on the mainland, so have no interest in feeding money into the workshop for repairs etc as there never use it now, and for all i know, i might get a phone call one day to say its going up for sale :lol: hopefully not before ive finished the xr2 though :oooh:

todays update aint much of one.

had a bit of a mare today, my parents are away fro the weekend and i had to go and check on the dogs, cos i used the wifes car today, the key to there place was on my focus keys :x so had to go back home and get it, so all in all i lost just under 2 hours fcuking about with that :(



anyhow, done a few odds and ends, and then put the rear shocks and the rear beam on, after crushing my finger getting it out :x :x then found i couldnt turn the car on the spit to put it up level again, this really did fcuk me off no end! i prob could of done it, but it wouldnt of been safe, as i couldnt pull the locking pin and support the body to move round to the side to spin it round in a safe way, so left it and go on with some prep in the engine bay, but something else went wrong today also which made me pretty much lose interest in today, so it was one of them days where your on it all day, (bar the 2 hours) but hardly anything of importance gets done, well that was today for me.

still, i did use a bit of time to give the workshop a good sweep up, and started on the bit i have to do on the reinforcer.

as said in yesterdays update, this part was cut out and fiberglassed over.
looks nasty with and without the fiberglass, but it will be sorted

i made this part up for the reinforcer, its not a perfect match to the std part, but its close enough, peened the edges over also so it matches as best to the normal one as poss.
once i cut the nasty metal out the reinforcer, ill know how much i need to trim it up by, and can then trim it in lenght and depth (so it will leave a gap as the other one has) then i cant cut the other bits and weld it all in.
i aint explaining it very well but your see what i mean when i do it.

ts not finished yet, but i had had enough today so left it there and fcuked off home

oh, and after i made it to this point, i thought i would check to see how far over it needs to be for the intercooler........... just to find clarks intercooler dont have the fcuking bit on the bottom to locate in this bit im putting in :x :x moss, your gunna change that boy :lol: and get the bottom bit for the rad too FFS :lol: :lol:

amother small update, today was a bit bitty like yesterday but still a good day.
while it was still on the spit, i took the chance to seam seal the bulk head lip in the engine bay, and also along the underside of the scuttle.
wire wheeled it up, treated a couple of areas of surface rust, primed and sealed

i even sealed these drain holes to stop water creeping back up into the joint, as well as the lip for windscreen, but only sealed the bottom part due to new scuttle going on

i also primed the sunroof opening yesterday, so thought it would be rude not to paint it today.
2 reasons for this..

1, the car prob wont be painted this year now, so i wanted it protected as best it could be from dirt etc
2, when it does come to painting the car, i dont want to be focusing attention on getting every nock and granny within the opening while blowing overspray across the roof, which could result in high spots in the finish of the paint??, this way, i can key it up and give it a quick blow over while doing the roof, and if i miss any bits where the seal slips on, its not going to matter as its already white.
only rattle can diamond white, but it was proper mixed while you wait stuff, not halfords off the shelf crap :lol: :lol: and was left over from my sisters old metro, so at least its not been wasted :bonkers:

also got the rear hubs and drums on, wheels on and got the back end off the spit.
ive put it on crates for the min to keep it high enough while i paint the back panel, ill level it all out when the front comes off the spit ready for putting the front end on, which i hope to start tail end of next week, depends what time i get next week.

back panel is further preped than these pics show, a wipe down, and a key up on a couple bits and shes ready for paint.
i say paint, the whole back panel is now going to be stone chipped than painted, i was only going to stone chip the bottom part, and paint the top, but not now, hence why your see nice lines of sealant on the top and some rough bits on the bottom edges.
to start with it was all smeared on, but i thought if its to be painted, then its going to look nice, so i wired wheeled it all off, but as i say, now im gunna stone chip the lot so you wont see it really :lol: ah well..

on other thing done today, and this is going to get mixed reactions im sure, as its a love it hate it thing, but by request of clark, the rear join lines from rear quarter to light panels have been smoothed over :oooh:

now to stop any potental problems in the future with cracking, all the paint was removed, and i welded the seam, then grond it off and skimed it with filler.
ive rubbed it down and primed it to protect the bare metal, as i could finish i off as i ran out of filler :( , so its on its first rough fill, and still has the final finishing to be done, but what ya see is how it stands now

for the back panel, i masked it up, and then put it on, the nozzle is a wide flat one anyway, but i smoothed it in with a spreader anyway, and before it went tacky, removed the masking tape.

that works better for brush on stuff, or thinner stuff (as the ford seam sealant is quite thick really) but yeah, it worked out ok, but as the ford stuff is a bit thicker, it tends to drag it about if you try to smooth it about to much, but still, if the rear turrets are anything to go by, once painted, it still looks bloody good :lol:

small update, and in a way, not a very good one for me :(

was over for a day on Clarks car on the 17th, trying to finish the back end off, but it was a crap day, was fine till it came to painting.
as you know i don't like it, and its worse when things go wrong, such as touching a freshly stone chipped back panel with the air line :rolleyes: my own fault, but not the end of the world, reaction between the stone chip and seam sealant, fcuking pissed off :x

anyway.

on Monday, while sorting out the back end to hopefully finish it i had a few jobs to do.

when i put the rear shocks on, the nuts scratched off some paint up on the turrets (under the nuts), now as sure as i am that i keyed the top parts up well enough it still happened, and i could scrape small bits off with my nail going from where the nuts took it off.
maybe the paint was still soft? i dunno tbh, it didn't chip off, but didn't peel off like tape, so im thinking due to the low temps in the work shop (at best im getting 17 degrees) it wasn't fully cured, but which ever way, i wasn't happy with it, so decided to strip it all off, re prime, and then repaint the tops, then once cured (in about a week :lol: ), lightly sand the mask line then compound the join in simples.

no :lol: , the primer ran below the mask line, meaning i cant do it that way as it will show through primer :x again my own fault as i didn't mean to prime the whole top part, just where bare metal was (at the top) which would of meant where the masking tape was. it would be white on white and no problem sanding and compounding, but a lapse of concentration, and worst still, not even noticing what i done :oooh: means that yet again, i have to paint part of the inside, but this time the whole fcuking turret on both sides is being done, and the nuts ain't going back on the shocks until the cars finished :lol:

oops, if i had noticed i could of demasked and faded it in and compounded it up later :(

i had to clean up prime and paint the welds that burnt through the paint on the inside of the car from welding the join line from rear quarter to light panels, so i done that, then keyed up and painted the rear light panels and rear panel reinforcer again, your see why that was done again below.

the boot seal lip had filler in it, as the top layer had rusted, and someone filled it and the filler cracked.
i chopped out the rotten metal, cleaned up the outer skin, ground up and repaired it.
it wasn't bad enough to the point i had to cut a massive section out, just the top layer, im sure others would of repaired it differently to what i did, but i put a thicker guage plate between the lip and welded it in to make it nice and strong again, then ground it back and skimmed over it with some plastic padding liquid metal filler, i was lucky enough to find a bit in the bottom of the tin that hadn't gone funny due to me not putting the lid on fully last time i used it :lol:

you can see the 2 small areas the air line touched :( i put it on fairly think and was getting away with it not sagging until the airline touched it :lol: its no biggy though, ill touch them areas in with some rattle can stone chip.
the back panels being over painted when i do the engine bay anyway so there be plenty of protection

oh and lets not forget that reaction with the seam sealant, ill redo the sealant and patch it in with rattle can stone chip again, but the only thing i can think of, is this was the side i started the stone chip on, and it was a bit too watery when i first started, even though i shook the $hit out of it for a couple mins, maybe the first bit had a bit to much solvent and its effected the thinned out edges of the sealant, that's all i can think of :-? the rest bar one little spot the size of a 5p on the same side but on the corner, is fine, and not effected....

further to the about, i planed to spray the Conner's of the scuttle white, which i did, but yet again a lapse in concentration meant i mixed up too much paint, i mixed enough for a big spray gun, but i was using a touch up gun :lol: :lol: DOH :lol: so rather than bin the paint, i quickly dug out the 2 front wings, wiped the insides down, keyed then up with red scotch brite, then wiped then over with thinners, then set about painting the insides with the paint i had left.

the problem with this, is i didn't want to dirty the big spray gun, so i done them with the touch up gun :lol: :lol: and were talking a spray pattern of about the size of a 10 pence piece :oooh:
about half hour later i had done both wings :lol: :lol: :lol: but i did give them a bloody good coating :bonkers:

wont see any black unpainted bits now when the wing goes on

so that's the update.

now for some extra bad news (for me)

while prepping Clarks back panel, his car claimed its second grinder :lol: but Clark has very kindly replaced that for me, cheers Clark :D

the touch up gun went wrong while using it, so Clarks car claimed that, but i snatched it back and repaired it, just hope it stays repaired and the recaro fiesta don't up its game next time i use it :lol:

the biggest fcuker of all though came yesterday when i went to get some more paint and stuff, only to find they went bankrupt a month ago :aaah: wtf, didn't see that coming, more so as they had a new computer system installed 2 months ago.
anyhow, i went to another, and as far as i know, now the only one on the isle of wight, to find they don't sell the same paint as ive been using (u-pol), off the shelf diamond white is 5 liters only, and maxmeyer is £45 plus vat a litre :aaah:
so that's sort of fcuked me up a bit, as the inside, engine bay, front inner arches and inside the wings were, and some have been, done in a off the shelf u-pol diamond white as its cheaper, and not subjected to the conditions the outside of the car is, which i will add, will be done in a decent branded paint, and i was gunna use maxmeyer.

But now i cant get it, im a little stuffed, as im not buying 5 litres of cheap paint to use 1/4-1/2 a litre of it, and this is gunna make me sound like a cheap ass i know, but i don't think its worth buying expensive paint to do a engine bay and front inner arches........ and anyone that's had to buy diamond white will know, theres more shades of diamond white than the stars in the sky :lol: :lol: :lol: so even 2 cheap paints could be a different shade :(

so after speaking to Clark about it yesterday, hes come up trumps and is getting a good branded paint close to him, at a good price, and is going to send it over, and due to the good price hes getting it for, the engine bay etc is going to be coated with a decent branded paint, at the sort of cost your would pay for a cheaper branded paint :D and we have decided between us to get enough mixed up to do the outside of the car also when the time comes, and have a decent amount left over :) this means less waiting, and its all gunna be the same shade now.


if, and its a big IF, the car is to be painted this year, im going to have to look at some forms of heating, i got a propane space heter, but its no ideal having air blown around before painting (i wouldnt leave it on while painting btw :bonkers: ) so gunna look into infrared heaters, and a extractor

all the effort going into those turrets is very much apreciated. But its gonna be a shame to cover them up with the ford sound proofing :lol:

The paint mentioned above will be bought through the local morelli to me in enfield. They sell glasurit which is one of the worlds leading brands of paint. There are over 13 shades of european ford diamond white btw :o

I have done that so many times Jay! I hate painting too. I really enjoyed it the first couple of times, but it takes so much effort and makes so much mess. Keep it up :D

yeah painting is a $hit, and your right about the mess, after a day like that the last thing you wanna do is pi$$ about cleaning guns out and all that crap, but its gotta be done :(

there were some choice words, couldnt of been too bad, no one came and knocked on the door to say anything :lol: i had a guy knock once and ask if i could turn the music down, :bonkers:

jony, yeah i am working fast, and have made a couple of simple mistakes because of it, easy fixed, but means a bit more time :( but overall, the cars at the point now that everything is coming together, and little things are making big differances to the overall look of the car, for example, i spent a day on the car preping up the back panel and doing odds and sods, and it still didnt look like it was any closer to being done, yet very soon, ill spend a day putting the front end on, and although the same amount of hours would be put in, it will look like ive done more and the cars a bigegr step to being finished, and ive been looking forward to this point of the build :lol: :lol: :lol:

ben, the car came over to the isle of wight sometime in 2010, but i didnt start on it until jan of 2011.
clark hasnt employed me to do it, it was a agreement we had between friends that i would do it as and when, but i intended to get it done long before now, but things happen and i couldnt always spend time on it, ive moved house since it came over too, and the 'repair the accident damage and give it a quick going over' turned into this, like it does :lol: and were at the point is is now.

but if i added up all the time spent on it since i started on it, then we're not even at the 3 months worth mark yet, i think its about 60-70 days worth of work so far, dispite the fact its been here so long :lol: ,but i wrapped it up november 2011, and didnt start back on it until july this year, so i dont think the time spent for work done is too bad myself, and theres been days in that lot that ive hardly got anything done, you know you get them days the intention is there, but the go aint :bonkers:

i would of been over there today doing more, but the wife rang me while doing school run to inform me the rear drivers side window of my st170 had dropped and kept falling down when she lifted it :rolleyes: so stripped the door to find the mech w@nked, well the plastic runner broken and the cables all jammed up, so a repair kit is need for that, but by the time i done that, i was pi$$ed off i had been held up because of it, it would of bene about 11.30 by the time i got to workshop so lost half a day near enough, and i just wasnt in the mood then, so didnt go as i know it wouldnt of been a productive day, so im a day behind again, so gotta pull my finger out tomorrow and try and pull it back over the next couple days.
