Speaker upgrades!

Postby dontpannic on Sun Apr 16, 2006 11:03 pm

OK, two versions of this post!

Lazy version.

want a total overhaul of car's ICE setup. Got head unit, but want new speakers all round. What do I need, how much, and what wiring is involved. Diagram below.

Technical version

I got a new Acoustic Solutions head unithttp://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5004465/Trail/C%24cip%3D36581.DIY%2C%2Bgarden%2Band%2Bcar%3EC%24cip%3D36685.In%2Bcar%2Bentertainment%3EC%24cip%3D36689.Car%2BCD%2Bradios.htm, (note output values when recommending) and has the copper output cables for 2 front speakers and 2 rear. It also has an RCA output.

can anyone tell me what speakers I can get for the doors (standard ford ones vibrate rather than give any bass), I think they are 13CM. I would also want to get some rear speakers (10CM space either side of parcel shelf) (with a bit of bass output) this could be a small sub, or some really bassy rear speakers.

Basically here is a (rather cr@p) drawing of what is in me car at the mo.

What speakers would you recommend for someone who is:
1. On a very very very very very very tight budget
2. Need for loud bassy music but no sub if possible
3. Would like to be able to use the fader and balance on radio itself

Also, how would I wire rear speakers up?

Thanks all, any advice much appreciated!

cheap front ones you can get 13cm Alpine or Sony Xplod 3-in-one speakers for about £30, Alpines come with Tweeters, Sony's are all built in.

As for the rear, I have 13cm Xplods and they're not brilliant but an improvement on the standards. The only way you're going to get something good in the back is with either 6x9s (shelf cutting required) or some more expensive 13cms

Not too sure if that head unit power measurement is done the same way as others but 20W sounds rather low!

Ford speakers are a silly size because the actual frame around the speaker is not round but a strange square shape so you will need adapters if you plan on putting 13cm in their places (front and/or rear), easy to get hold of.

Alternatively you can buy custom door pods that can hold 17cm speakers and they thump nicely :Q

would I need an amp or anything like that? How would it connect?

Sorry for all the questions!

Rather than buy a load of cheap stuff that you will certainly only upgrading later I would get a nice head unit and then th ebest component set you can up front. Add some dynamat behind the speaker on the outer door skin to keep the sound in and the vibration down. This setup even with factory speakers will be an improvement. If you want a bit of bass, some cheap and cheerfull 6x9's with a coil to cut the high frequencies from them (you want the treble at the front for imaging and to give a goood sound stage)

Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience
