rs1800 still running hot

Postby and.RS1800 on Sun Apr 13, 2003 10:06 pm

car still running with temp gauge at 'N'.still no mayo in oil,but fan only cuts in when temp right up.took off heater pipes yesterday& flushed loads of s**t out but still no joy!changed thermostat,& flushed rad already.changed gauge sender twice.does anybody know if ford used different senders for different 1800 zetecs as i dont have faith in my local dealer(ask for parts for fiesta rs1800 they say "rs turbo?" :x fools. i need to sort asap as idont want to f**k the head if its not gauge.

the fan on my rs cuts in just above the "o" i think. if ur worried about overheating take ur themostat out all together and run ur fan on constant then i doubt it will over heat.

thats why i wondered if they used more than one type of sender for zetecs because the parts/service staff at my local dealers seem so vague about any parts i buy.

yes fan sender is in rad.but what i was hoping it was just wrong temp gauge sender ,which would mean every thing else is fine.if not sender is it bad airlock?havetried every thing to bleed out any air by loosening all the hoses etc.only 4.5 -5 litres of coolant would go back in.haynes say 7.is this due to coolant which hasnt drained from block?

mobile man wasnt some chancer with a van & some tools,he was proper vehicle technician.franchiesed to green flag :o .didnt really hav much choice as i say girlfriend wouldnt drop car off any where & iddont usually get home from work till after six.anyway i know people whove worked for main daelers like godfrey davis & perrys &they have not carried out certain service jobs which the customer is being charged for!!i had bad experiance with my old jag, where it whent to specialists for major service & i needed raer suspension rebuild,so did it my self, half the things they said needed doing were fine :x they never even greased it.then had the cheeck to argue & ask if i knew what i was doing!anyone else had bad experiances of specialists/tuners?

what is the optimum runnins temperature for an engine then? I know the thermostat doesn;t open until 88degrees so presumably about 90 degrees on a run would be ok?

what about oil temps?

if it is cam timing & head been buggered how would i stand regarding recompense from mr green flag?also, how much to to get it checked? methinks about nearly the same as labour to do cam belt in first place?if it was out wouldnt it run very rough and not rev very well?she'll still redline through the gears.

yea my dumb si plays the scary game with me all the time the temp needle goes up to the N and then the fan kicks in untill the needle drops to the O. was wondering if someone could post me a guide on how to fiddle around with the fan to either make it stay on all the time or to make the fan kick in earlier like when the temp gets to the O insted of the N?

ur fan has a switch in the rad which switched to on at a certain temp u can either bi pass this (put a switch onit or bridge the connections so its on all the time) or u can get a switch which "opens" at an earlier temp. u can also change ur thermostat for one that kicks in at a lower temp.

just a note though zetec engines can run really hot so it is usuall for it to kick in above the "O" and just below the "N"

is it possible to upgrade the rad in these cars? would like cooler running on my si. if its nailed in 3rd gear the temp does climb up but doesnt overheat. scary though.

or would just getting a new rad to replace my original 21 year old one make any difference?

got a new rad and makes no difference to how the temperature responds, got a lower opening fan switch which does kick the fan in a little bit sooner so that will have to do.
