Problem with subwoofer

Postby DK on Wed Aug 19, 2009 8:52 pm

I got an FLI12'' active subwoofer afew months ago. Sounds great and everything.

However, the last month or so.. the sub acts unusual. I duno if its maybe a connection or whatever but..
Whenever I switch on the radio for the first time after starting the car, the sub will be off. in the first 1-2minutes the sub would make a kick noise (like when you make that thudding when tap onto a microphone that has speakers on).
each time it makes the thud/tap noise, it goes on and off. thud-on, thud-off and so forth. the frequency and amount of times it does it is random. but usally after 1-2minutes it will thud on then will never do it again for the remainder of the journey, if the stereo stays on when I turn the ignition off it will be fine too. It's just whenever I start the car up, its like it resets then thuds on/off randomly for 1minute,until it thuds on and stays on.

Possibly my fiesta's battery is getting weak now? I've lowered the gain and dB on the back of the active sub, but not noticed much change.

sounds like a faulty amp or a dodgy cable somewhere...check the amp when it turns off next time to make sure its still got power and remote live...also make sure your earth is still secure as suggested above

still having the problem. everything seems ok.. earth doesn't look like it'd have a problem or anything. for my earth, I have the wire attached underneath one of the screws that is on the inside of the boot, nearest to you. and i just have the earth wire taped around the edges of the boot till it reaches the back of the subwoofer.

also, whenever it cuts off. the power is still on. however, the speaker is very quiet. like its distorted. before it makes a 'thud' noise and works properly.

may sound silly m8 but try this

on my mk3 i noticed that my headunit crushed my RCAS at the back of the headunit, and whenever i started my car i would get a thud n then my speakers were very low unitl i pushed or moved the HU then it worked fine... i tried the usual .. earth, power cable, etc etc until i notice my RCAS were bent at the back after removing my headunit

anyway i bought some scorpion angled RCAS and everything fine....

not a very common fault but worth a look
hope this help.

I'm based around east london Bassboy.

how possible is it to blow the amp?
We had further looks at the wires and they all seemed fine. The remote wire seemed fine as if you take it off, and dab it on the connections it will come on/off as normal, so that seems fine.

Is it likely that something is blown in the amp which doesn't make the speaker work properly? Kinda defeats the point of the protection circuitry it has.
If I put the gain and bass boost all the way up, the amp obviously gets hot, then will go into protection mode until it can cool down.

For what reasons would the Protection LED come on? in the manual it only mentions the following..

If the amplifier is incorrectly wired or an abnormal situation occurs such as speaker cables
shorting the red protection LED will illuminate.

when the Green power LED is on (and the speaker not working), the protection light is never on. All fuses are fine, earth wire (and earthing is fine)
Boggles my mind!
