my dog might have to have a leg removed!

Postby jayrs on Tue Jul 01, 2008 10:28 pm

wife took the dog to the vets today as poor little fcuker been limpinmg for a week after he knocked it, vet thinks hes got some sort of desease or something, something that effects small dogs anyway, and reckons the rear leg has to come off and booked it in for tomorrow! 2nd july :o

i think this is utter b0llocks my self, hes a yorkshire terrier, 9 months old.

oh and this is the best bit, vet reckons between £400 and £500 to do it :aaah: thank fcuk for insurance
still we have decided not to have his leg lobbed off tomorrow, wifes gunna take hin in for the xray, that will prob sting me for £60+ on top of the £23 he charghed today :x , but im thinking of getting a second option after this xray has been done.
ive read up about the problem, i forget the name of it and am not going to attempt to try and spell it as my spelling is bad enough as it is  , but the read up does say it shows up in small dogs between 6 and 10 months old :(

fingers crossed little paxo doesnt have to have his leg removed, other wise i gotta think about calling him tri pod or something.

heres the little fella, poor fcuker donno what may lay ahead of him :(

Hey mate, sorry to hear about your predicament.

For what it's worth, I knew a german shepherd called Ronnie who lost a leg after inexpertly vaulting a 5 pole gate at a stables. He actually hardly lost much mobility, just a bit of top end. He still led an active and healthy life. Remember, animals aren't prone to analysing disability themselves, so don't ascribe to him human feelings on the issue. :)

Hope all turns out well.

cheers dude.

vet did say being a small dog the loss of 1 leg wouldnt make much to any differance to him, but i just think its all a bit suddon you know, today he says hes go X desease but will confirm tomorrow when the x ray is done and if thats the case there pop the leg off the same day :oooh: , dont give us much chance to think about it, and the vet being some rich c*nt just expects us to have £500 sat there doing nothing, like yeah no worries here it is we wont miss it sort of thing  dont do credit cards as i got into debt with one when i was 18 so i stay away from them now so bit of a bugger, but still were gunna get x ray done and go from there

The vets that we use are really understanding about large bills, they normally ask for a 100 quid and if you can prove you have insurance they let you claim then settle the bill when they pay out :)

BTW we have 2 mini yorkies :aviator:

guy did say speak to the guy in charge see what he is willing to do.

mind you as said hes just having x ray this morning, we need time to think and talk about it, i still belive he will get better, and thats not helpped by someone next door told me.

there cat hurt her leg in a fight and vets said it had to be removed and would cost X amount, they wasnt gunna pay that and nursed this bloody cat, and hey ho, it walks fine now, jumps on my shed and all sorts, fcuking thing :x

so never know, all could be well but we gotta wait for x ray then i will seek a second option, and maybe change vets also as theres something about this vets place i dont like, there a small place and have 2 brances, and to get something done you have to go to newport, for something else the wotton one, only to get there and find what they need is in newport so its been a wasted trip :x , im babbiling now but it seems a bit micky mouse set up to me, more the reason to think before having hes leg removed ya know

:o lol!

Really hoping he doesnt have to have it off, my dog is getting old now and slowing down loads, little Paxo has his whole life ahead of him and he wont be too worried about the loss of one leg I dont think, unlike us losing one he still has three left!

Sounding harsh but better he has it done young too, or it would be much harder to get used to.

well some good news.

he does have to have a leg off :) well not yet anyway.

he does have this desease but very very slight, hes got some stuff to take and he gotta have x ray again in 4 weeks but vet now seems to think he will be ok, only having to have the leg removed if it gets really bad.

i take that as

"$hit, he hasnt got that and to save me looking like a c*nt ill tell them its very slight and in 4 weeks ill tell them hes fine and i look good"

  , but who knows, still its some good news.

thats £78.90 the vets had out of my rs fund :x

Surely you have a seperate fund for Vets and the RS? If not, you have a hacksaw in the shed don't you?

Nah only joking. Good to hear Paxo might not have to have his leg off!

glad he doesn't have to have his leg off mate, although it's not too bad if they do have it done - especially one of the rear legs (means their arse bounces about rather than their head )

I sympathise with you about the vets, my cat lost craploads of weight last year - went into the vets for this that and the other, spend ages looking for the cause only to find out that it was IBS and she just had to eat blander food. That little lot took £2500 to find out!

Oh mate I've ran out of cash as it is ... lol. I'm in my overdraft now and dont get paid til 25th....trying not to buy car parts but maybe just some back lights.

Jay, it looks like Skippy and Tripod are out of the window then! Vets are like Doctors really, one diagnosis fits all. Under qualified over-paid baboons.......

indded guys

£2500 on a cat :o :o

im not really a cat lover and i dont blaim people for sorting there pets but damn :o :o

we got to let the insurance company know anyhow, when he has more x rays thats gunna push it over the £80 we have to pay first of any claim so there cover the rest.
i know it sounds tight to make a claim for the sake of about £60, but the claim will cover any on going treatment, so if say in 6 months he really does need the leg off then the full cost will (should) be covered under the insurance, so really from now on give or take we shouldnt need to opay a penny more on him at the vets to do with this problem

It quickly adds up, they couldn't work out the problem and tried a lot of different things. What cost the most was all the drugs and lab tests.

She couldn't keep anything down, and if she did manage to eat without puking it'd all go through her really quickly. She ended up weighing 1.2kg (average cat weight is 4kg) so it was kinda at the emergency stage, the drugs were the only thing that helped her digest food.

She's an absolute pie now though, I put her at about 6/7kg - I'd rather a fat cat than a bullemic one  :D

My dog had a bad limp at a young age. It cost us a fair bit to find out and in the end we still never got to the botom of it. We had xrays we had them sent to specialists all sorts. in the end they said it was old scar tissue hed never fell or anything :S i was abit confused myself haha. But hes ok now bounds round the house like a mad dog. But i supose a british bulldogs classed as a medium size dog and not a small one.
