Mot question/tyres

Postby Gus!! on Thu Oct 24, 2013 3:09 pm

My mot is coming up next week (s**t) and i think i have everything sorted. However, i am getting new tyres for the pots next month when i have money, so i have to make do with what i have right now!! One of my front tyres is fine about 3/4 the way across but the inside edge is getting pretty bad and will need replacing soon, however, will it pass an mot like this??

That looks like itl be ok, remember its 1.6mm across the middle 75% of the tyre and aslong as you don't have bad cuts in it etc should be fine ad legal, that's what the law is or was when I done my mechanics course haven't heard anything about it changing since.

that could fail an mot but i'm not 100% sure. you will just need another steering column to sort that. the best mot to get is one station that don't do repairs, why? for instance kwik shift, they would fail that tyre and say buy a new one that day to get the car back along with anything else. independent mot stations that don't do repairs will give a fair and impartial mot with a lot of advice. theres a local one to me who are brilliant and tell it straight as they have nothing to gain and nothing to lose!

Went in for mot today, it failed on steering play and it being too stiff, so i need a new steering column, headstock, everything. As i have replaced it before and i think it just had different warn out bits than the original and made it worse!! Other than that i just need to sort the full beam tell tale. And tbh, i am proud to own a mo3 that didnt even get an advisory for rust :)
I took it to a small garage ad they dont tend to rip you off as much, also i find if you let them know you will be doing the work yourself they seem to be more leinient (spelled wrong) lol
