Mike's Imperial ZS Thread *Cleaned Interior* 18th Aug
Some of you may remember that I used to own a fiesta!
That was great, but I wanted more power and reliability so went for a Civic Type-R. The trouble with having that though is that I don't like it getting used in all weathers and parking it here there and everywhere! So I've been looking for a runaround for some time now!
I started by trying to find a 1.1 Mk3 in red, any I did see were quickly sold. Or the ones that remained were asking £600+, not what I wanted to pay for such an old car.
As time went by my car savings increased, so I started to look for a Mk5 Zetec (don't like the look of mk4's - apart from max's
).
Yet again, I wanted to spend £2k, but any I did see were high mileage or sold! I saw some priced £2.5k upwards!
Just for a 1.25!!
Then the other day I saw this little beauty, a great price, quite tatty IMO but easy to bring back up. And I picked it up tonight! Mike's new runaround!

More pics and updates as they happen. It'll be staying standard but will hopefully be looking a lot nicer soon!

You've got it all wrong!
This is your 'special' car, and the Civic is now the runaround
Looks quite clean from the pic. Have you driven it much yet? If so, how do you find it?

Max M4X WW :Cool, Is this an early one with time-bomb engine? Just wondering!
Haha!

The wheels don't have centre caps, the inside is darker, and I think the engine cover is black

Smo'ster - I drove it home and I've been out a bit tonight. I'm quite used to it already as I drive my mum's 1.25. It's basically a faster 1.25 with more solid handling.
It rolls more round the corners than the Type-R though, but it is nicer over the speed bumps!

I'm not a fan of the driving position, the seats are crap, don't hold you, and they don't go back far enough.
Can't grumble though

Ah, I'm glad you said that about the seats - always something I've wondered from how they look! Could do with a nice set of Recaros finished in the same trim
(Not that the trim is great anyway
)
Great little runaround car whatever though

They're just as bad am my mum's 1.25 seats. No support, not tall enough to hold all of your back etc

I've always known ZS's to be let down by the seats, ah well!
I won't be using them for long journeys so it's ok

I want to change it really. XUD is a bit loud for my liking. But limited to a few hundred quid plus it. Like Vento's, Rover 400's and things but must be a derv!
Now let mike's topic continue lol.

Well I come back from work to find all these posts, I'm thinking I'm Mr Popular, but no, the thread has been brutally attacked with Pug talk!
Ah I don't mind, it's all good. Nice to see a busy FT.com
Max - Those seats would be the ones of choice, but with a Buy It Now of almost a 1/3 of the cost of the car, I think I'll leave it!
Tom - I'll get some tatty pics at the weekend. It's been raining today and it'll need a good wash in order to see them. Nothing that can't be fixed though, the polishing machine will be busy!
h196jne - No I must not modify it!
I like them standard to be honest, plus I don't want the cost of mods and the insurance increase. Being a second car I needed the insurance to be low.
Also, if it is made to look better then it'll be more likely to be stolen. And if it's made faster it'd cost too much to get upto my Type-R, so seems kind of pointless.

It'd need a hell of a lot in order to make it better than the bread van!

I need to start saving for something to replace the bread van now!

Cheers dudes

Phase two wheels and the best colour in my opinion. How's the painted steering wheel, has it all come off?
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

Well, the steering wheel is really dirty at the moment so I can't properly assess. I'll get some pics at the weekend. I've seen plenty before with it all off so I know what you mean, we will see!

LOL! Time-bomb engine, obviously you've been listening to all those myths!

Looks very tidy, you can tell if the engines phase 2 as it'll have a black plastic rocker cover, rather than the polished metal phase 1 and will have Zetec-SE on rather than Zetec-S

*** UPDATE FRIDAY 17TH AUGUST ***
*** BOUGHT NEW PARTS ***
As part of it's tidy up there were a few things that needed buying!
Firstly the number plates, I hate words at the bottom of the plate, plus it has screw holes (I like them to be stuck on), and the screw holes have gone rusty.

They are mint but the protective cover is reflecting back and making them look dodgy! £22 delivered from fancy plates.
Next up I've bought some:
- New centre caps (pics of old when I change them over) for £5 a corner
- Window bolt covers £1 each, need to go back to Ford as they only gave me 5 rather than 6 I asked for
- Oil filter, about £7
Not sure when I'll change the oil yet as it's only done 5k since the last change, mmm...
- New Mk5 mats, £19 off ebay, the description was crap, and so was the pic, hence why they were so cheap. They are £45 from Ford, woo!

More pics when they are all fitted!
I need dry weather this weekend but I bet I don't get it!!

Good stuff!
Those mats don't look like genuine Ford (if that was the description?) as the Fiesta logo is slightly wrong. None the less they look tidy, just don't get them too muddy or wet!
Oh, and don't suppose you're a member on http://www.zsoc.com are you?

I looked around and all the genuine mk5 mats looked like that

They fit perfectly as they are shaped for the contours of the footwell, plus they have Ford written on the underside with part numbers etc
Do you have any genuine mats?
Yep, I'm on ZSOC too

*** UPDATE SATURDAY 18TH AUGUST ***
*** CLEANED INTERIOR AND EXHAUST ***
Well the forecast was for rain this afternoon so I was outside just after 8am to get a bit of the car sorted.
Firstly the crap steering wheel, felt mucky and also looked it!

Some all purpose cleaner and it looked a lot better. The dye in the wheel is starting to come off like a lot of the ZS steering wheels. Here's a half and half...

And with some conditioner it was nicely finished...

The crap mats came out, here's what they looked like...

And a bigger improvement with new I think! The blue 'fiesta' logo works well.

So the interior was now finished, much nicer!

Quickly needed to sort the boot...

It wasn't really fit for anything in that state, so a quick vac and some cleaner to remove the stains...

Rain was almost here so I quickly sorted the exhaust. Here's a before, almost rust!!

A brillo pad, some all purpose cleaner, and some metal polish made an improvement...

Still more vac'ing to do, it was hard to pick up all the mess! But I'll leave it for a while. I'm itching to get started on the paintwork, my speciality

I was expecting the wheel to be much worse than that after seeing one at a dealer once that was almost totally black!

Well I'm tempted to make it all black, if I scrub hard enough then I think I could get rid of the dye, what are your thoughts?
