Loom compatibility... One for the boffins!

Postby Gmc on Thu Apr 30, 2015 10:02 pm

Hi folks, currently building another RS, starting out with an N plate 1.1, now.. I'm doing things in stages and the engine will be last, I've just picked up a full RS Turbo car loom (minus engine loom) and my query is this... Will it be possible to swap out my 1.1 loom, with the RS car loom? I'd love to think that the engine loom will simply plug into the RS interior loom without issues, but I'm slightly sceptical!

Ideally it would work, thus allowing me to fit central locking, electric windows etc, yet still be able to use the car as a 1.1 till a later date!

Anyone any ideas? I'm looking at Excursion here! You've got to know...

Has your 1.1 loom not got the connector to plug your electrics loom into? I'm pretty sure my Azura has, which is as basic as they get!

It's definitely easy the other way (RS engine loom into the 1.1 car loom), you just have to swap the 12 pin connector from your 1.1 engine loom on to your turbo engine loom and ignore a few missing pins, extend a few wires, etc... I've done it a few times, but can't remember off the top of my head exactly what is needed.

However, the way you want to do it may be a little trickier. You'll be missing, firstly, the feed from the fuel pump or injection relay (can't remember which) to the lambda sensor (pin 5 on your engine loom connector, black/red I think). This could obviously easily be added. I think you'll need to hook up a pin for your coolant temp gauge, unless the CVH works the same way as the HCS and just uses a push-on connector. Also you'll need to check out the length of the rad fan switch wiring depending on where that connects in your engine bay, whether it's much different between the CVH and HCS? On the Zetec I had to lengthen the 1.1 car loom to reach the Zetec rad. Off the top of my head, I can't think where the rad fan switch goes to on the turbo car loom.

The thing I can't answer at all is PATS... Now, the 1.1 ECU doesn't have internal PATS, it's all controlled by an external module which is part of the car loom. Removing that loom, you'll remove the PATS and everything associated it - that I know for sure. What I don't know is how the PATS wiring immobilises the rest of the starting and running. There's a couple of extra wires on the 1994+ 1.1 engine loom, but I don't know if any of them are used to immobilise/allow ignition. From what I remember of mine, when I turn the key without the immobiliser ring, my ignition comes on, but doesn't start... I have no idea if it's purely the starting circuit it immobilises or not? However once you change the car loom (which changes all your starter/charging wiring anyway), you'll probably find the 1.1 engine loom will operate as normal.

Oh, lastly, the oil pressure switch wiring is different. I don't know why? What you'd have to do is pull the wire from your 1.1 engine loom, there's a 4-pin connector it goes through, extend it, and then pop the pin into whatever engine loom connector you use to plug into your RS car loom.

Everything is doable, but the immobiliser bit *may* (although unlikely) cause a problem. But first, check that you can't simply plug your electric pack loom straight into the 1.1 loom!

If your car doesn't have a rear wiper or rear speakers, then I can appreciate you may want to go the extra mile and fit the whole loom to get all that stuff!

Great info there Simon! I can help a little..
There is no lambda on the rst engine so I don't see why you'd want wiring for one?
Coolant sensor on the rst is a simple push fit connector
Isn't the rad fan controlled by the temp sensor in the thermostat housing, nor the coolant sensor the 2 pin larger one..

I would also check your current interior loom for the wiring for the extras your wanting my M reg frascatti has most if not all the extra wiring for the bits it didn't come with its just left on the loom with blanks in the plugs

He wants to use the RS interior loom with the 1.1 engine for now, Russ, hence he'd need to feed the lambda sensor from the relay. I believe it only powers the heater circuit anyway? Can't remember exactly!

Thanks very much for the great response! I haven't yet had a look to see if it has the multiplugs to add the electric pack, has just assumed swapping the whole loom was just as easy, I've done it before whilst reshelling my old RS

The car itself is an Azura, has the rear wiper and I can't recall if it has rear speakers

I didn't consider the lamda sensor when swapping looms, but I would guess it would run fine without, same as it would if it was de-catted

I guess the best option is to wait till my loom arrives and see what matches up where and if I can simply take the electric pack out and plug it into my current loom, I'll need to make some changes anyway as I'm planning to have the window switches in the doors rather than the centre console

The loom arrives Wednesday so I'll take it from there, I'd just be happy to get central locking and electric windows in, small creature comforts!
