Interesting......

In had some suspicions that the very early XR2is were fitted with the same square tailpiped exhausts as Fiesta RS Turbos....

This vid confirms this!!!!.......found on you -tube under "Ford Fiesta Mk3 Promotional Video"

Ive got a square tailpiped early xr2i one aswell, but the only problem with them is they are one piece, without the turbo pipe extension from the front box, and to fit them you have to remove the rear drivers side wheel and shock to get it on!!!........Ballache!!!!

So apart from the down pipe part are they the same bore wise ?

I noticed the XR2i in the video didn't have the air deflector.

No not bore wise. They are 5mm in diameter difference. On a standard car theres no difference in power loss etc.

I noticed this aswell , but

In these two pics, it does and its a Turbo Driven Report in "Auto car!!

(And also notice that the early rear decal ,had a blue "turbo" sticker instead of all silver!!! :D

Funny what Fords did in different plants. I doubt there will ever be a definitive answer on some of the reasons why ford changed some parts etc. :D

I've weighed in quite a few new round type backboxes for the XR2i 8v simply due to the lack of demand. Although no doubt they will be sought after in the future. Bore size is slightly smaller as mentioned already. I'd have kept them if they were the square type which were found on the early cars.

Yes I've got a complete early type system for the RS 1800 and the later type centre section (the connection to the rear box is different). It needs to find its way onto a concours RS 1800!

That car also has the rubber air deflector that is found on some models!

I was told something very interesting about the air deflector this morning and what its use was.

I have this on very good authority so I believe it to be true.

The air deflector was there to deflect air onto the gearbox to cool it and not what I thought which was deflect air towards the airbox (on the RS1800s), some people (a few concours judges) thought they were not needed (on FRSTs) due to the airbox being on the opposite side.

I now believe 100% that some (perhaps not all) FRSTs were fitted with these from new.

I hope that makes sense.

I like the square pipes. The 1989 CARS brochure shows the 2i with a silver square pipe.

The big round pipe started in around '91.
