I need to settle something...

Postby Charm on Sun Jan 18, 2009 1:43 am

I got into and argument with my boyfriend earlier. He says that everyone who modifies their cars are chives, obviously I disagree. I actually got quite offended by this (says the person who almost never gets offended) because my boyfriend's definition of a chive is an illiterate "scumbag" who has attitude problems etc. etc. I'm sure you all know the generalisation.
So, what clique, trend, label or whatever the f*** you call it are you?

To be honest, the majority of people on here have jobs, own or rent their own homes and rarely partake in any of the activities normally associated with "chives", "charvers", "scallys" or "townies". Pretty much in direct contradiction of the chive stereotype.

Apart from anything else, you have to clear up the definition of "modifying" and whether that means sticking bits of plastic crap from halfords / motorworld on your shopping trolley or something more serious and sensible. I can't see most chives fitting quality adjustable aftermarket dampers and springs, nor swapping hubs & stub axles so they can fit 4 pot calipers. That, I think, marks the difference between a "chive" and an "enthusiast".

I actually get really offended by this as well, and people who have commented on my plans for my car saying "oohh proper boy racer car then" deserve a kick in the in-betweens and a smack in the side of the head tbh. The definition of a chive is so much broader than just modifying cars (which I agree, needs to be defined also).

We all work fookin hard for our money, and spend it on something we enjoy, which is, either restoring our cars to factory condition or making slight improvements from standard factory specification.

This has really hit a nerve but I'm trying to remain calm :oooh:. I'm not even that annoyed that he's so naive he thinks making a comment like that is acceptable, I actually pity him for the total lack of intelligence he's shown. Anyway, this is the wrong forum to be posting comments like that on I think, this is a Ford forum for enthusiasts, so you won't find any chives here I'm afraid. Similarly with Toyota MR2, Volkswagen Golf, or any other car enthusiast forum for that matter.

Your boyfriend is so annoyingly naive its unbelievable!! (calm down Alex....) Get him to Ford Fair and let him see how many of the cars there are modified with cheap bits of plastic, flashing gear knobs and lexus rear lights?! Not many I shouldn't think. I actually invite him to go to any other car specific show as well.

Most of the people on here are either students or tax payers! I'm guessing your boyfriend has had a pretty sheltered life, and he obviously has something against chives, to be honest, I don't.

My boyfriend has had a lot of run-ins with chives, so understandably he is bias against them.
He also seems to have picked up an attitude from his brother of "I don't like it so it's s***, so no one else should like it either." I'll have to beat him out of it.

Anyway, when I can afford it, he's going to have to put up with me doing stuff to my car. So he better get over this attitude soon.

Playing the old game of swings and round-a-bouts then?

I suspect because 15-yr old kids in track suit bottoms take the mickey out of his long hair, he doesn't like them? If I'm honest, I used to be a 15-yr old kid in trackies, and looking back I was so immature and stupid some of the things I did. Trouble with the police and all of that business, but I've grown up now.

It's just kids being kids to be honest, I'm not excusing it but it will happen (since this country, the government and the whole system is miserably failing it's children and young people).

He should rise above all that though, I've grown up, and so have loads of other people. He'll have to do it too, one day.

I get this too, it gets my goat to be honest. When I'm seen driving a Nova with blacked out windows, 10" exhaust, lexus lights and halfords alloy's trying to impress a 12 year old girl in the passenger seat whilst racing Audi's and BMW's THEN you have the right to call me a boy racer.

I'm 20, drive sensibly in a Fiesta that has handling and aesthetic modifications, that ISN'T a boy racer / chive.

In all honesty this has annoyed me too because I have a few mates who you could describe as "chives", as in they wear the trackies, baggy tops, crap taste in cars  , basses, rubbish music etc etc but I wouldn't give them the label " illiterate scumbags" because it's a case of personal oppinion and if modifying cars is what you like then go for it, it just sounds like he has a problem towards them and if he has been in a few "incidents" with them then maybe it's time you asked the question is it something he is doing wrong which caused them?

Go for it, do your car how you wish because at the end of the day it is your car and it should be what you like :)

IMVHO it's most likely a case of they're chives and he's existing. Therefore there's bother. As for illiterate / illegitimate - it's so easy to confuse (especially if you're both) but scumbags ? Quite possibly.
