Ah right, rolldeep.com or .co.uk one of.... failing that load kazaa, type rolldeep or pay as yu go.... download the 20 30 or 40mb ones.. there like tapes.. some are s**t ur just have to find tha decent ones!

Very Retro!

The Speed Garage sound of 97 - 4/4 beats with a light kick and sine wave sub-bass lines.

They took a big chance dragging up a 5 year old style but it seemed to work.

Garage

Basically it's called "Garage" because of the New York Club called the Paradise Garage. It started in the early 80s as a continuation of Disco, the same soulful sounds but made with sequencers and drum machines which were cheaper than live musicians. ~ 120bpm.

It's all a bit murky, but House stemmed from producers who stripped the vocals down a little, or removed them completely and speeded the tracks up a bit to around 125bpm

Speed Garage

So called because the speeds were pitched up 10bpm or so faster than before. After this caught on producers made the tunes faster to start with. Some variety here, some tracks full vocal, Rosie Gaines etc and some minimal, Double 99 - RIP Groove. The major two identifiers are the sine wave sub bass line, exactly like you'd find in a Drum & Bass track, and the harder percussive drums, sometimes with breakbeats (187 Lockdown - Gunman, Kung Fu) but always a 4/4 beat.

2 Step / UK Garage

This evolved from Speed Garage and followed the same two formats - full vocal (MJ Cole - Sincere) and stripped down. Only with "2 Step" breaks - 2 kicks to the bar instead of the constant 4. Very much a "London Thing" it developed with MCs (Creed, Neat etc) and with the inevetable popularity it became commercialised with acts such as So Solid Crew cashing in. Not to say all commercialisation is bad, Artful Dodger launched the career of Craig David and tracks like Shanks & Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate hit the charts and still got respect.

so bassically the whole 'so solid' crap ect is all uk based.... very much a home grown attrosity (sp) and not state side influenced?! im guessing the late 90s version of 'its a london thing' falls in this category.... was pretty cool in a non addictive way....

the speed grage is all very clear now, i dont mind that stuff.... ive got a couple of them, kung fu, gunman, ripgroove (the ones you mentioned!) definatly prefer those more due to them being a 'little' more commercialised over the earlier garage scene.... not to much tho.

as for the early stuff, i cant say ive heard any of that and been able to identify..... is it still popular and played these day?!

Still going strong if you know where to look. Frankie Knuckles, Danny Tenaglia etc, who would be mortified to see a group of wannabe gangsters spouting poorly constructed rhymes over feeble beats and calling it "UK Garage".

As far as the US is concerned, Garage is still what it always has been. Pop-Hop saturates the charts over there.

Technically "UK Garage" would be the American style stuff, made and played over here, and such a thing does exist. For example: The Daou - Give Myself To You, on the Tribal UK label.

Im on kazaa sharing a fair amount of uk garage. Mainly Todd Edwards along with some heartless crew, PAUG, and DJ EZ. User name is Daztrouk.

Best place to download uk garage is by a program called 'direct connect'. Thats where i got most of my stuff.
