FRST 99 problems grunt aint one
Hi all, posted this on RSOC also...
Anyways... Went ahead and bought a radiant red FRST. Cost me 2k plus about £500 to get it home. Reg: J710 BTV.. Owned a s2 escort in the past so thought I knew what to expect. Turns out I DID NOT!
The advert stated that the car was a 2.1 ZVH, on coilovers, pro alloy inter cooler, dump valve, T3 turbo, vernier pulleys? Chipped, 15" (might be 16") mondeo alloys, ap paddle clutch - that's all I can remember off the top of my head.
So took it out for my first drive and OH MY WORD THE SUSPENSION IS ROCK SOLID. The car bounces around everywhere on even the smallest bump, the steering needs the strength of he-man anywhere past half lock but boy is it fast!!!
Does anyone know of this car? I've looked on fiesta turbo.com to no avail.
Car seems to run lumpy on Idle although I suspect this is down to overfueling? I was hoping someone could tell me why the suspension is soooo hard. Also why the steering is so heavy... I undertake that theres no PAS but this is beyond a joke... Could it be because the car is lowered? What should I do to rectify this? Any advice is much appreciated.
Will post pics tomorrow.
I'm in Bournemouth so lots of free drink should anyone want to come over for a look/drive.
Thanks again

Suspension shouldn't be rock solid, sounds like it could all be seized. Might be worth taking each shock off and seeing if the pistons move freely... Then adjust the damping settings and see how you get on. Or start with the damping settings.

Contacted the above user - he reckons the coilovers are AVO and he remembered them as being too hard for road use. I will see if they are seized though. Thanks for the advice.
Supposing they are seized or need replacing for some reason - what set up would people recommend for road use? I don't want them too hard and would like to keep the stance a bit lower than standard - nothing too extreme though as I intend to use this as a daily driver ideally.
Thanks all

AVO aren't too hard for road use, in my opinion. Myself and a few others are running AVO coilovers and I feel that on their softest setting they are really nice and smooth, smoother than standard and/or aftermarket suspension.. spax -40mm as a comparison.

Thanks Danny - sounds to me like they may be on too hard a setting or are seized then because trust me, the ride is ridiculous at the moment. I guess I will have to get the car on a ramp and have a look.

For future reference, the damping screws effect the following.
Front shocks: Rebound damping.
Rear shocks: Bump damping.
It sounds like the rears are wound up to the maximum setting which will make the ride VERY harsh and choppy. Turn them all the way to the left and they should be softer. I remember when I played around with my damping settings and when I turned the rears up, the rear end literally bounced over a 2 inch speed bump, so yours might just be turned up too much.
Hope you get it sorted!

on my old frst with avo's everything was set hard and was very bumpy . as for steering mine was heavy but i put it down to how low it was as when i raised it to fit different wheels it got a bit lighter

If its still to hard after shock reset you could buy new lesser poundage springs. I found avo's #kin hard also even on least setting. Handled great though!
