evolution of car safety, reinforcement bars in the doors and rear quarters, no doubt front and rear has had a lot of strengthening and a lot of air bags! no doubt those recaro seats are heavy too! maybe the gearbox and the front setup to control that power adds to the weight too. no doubt some places will figure out how to shift the weight.

That's the maximum permissible gross weight when fully loaded (fuel, passengers, luggage). The kerb/unladen weight is around 1100kg iirc but this will vary according to the options fitted.
