Codecs for Windows Media Player Vista?
Hello, ive downloaded some films and they work but i can only hear the sound and no picture using windows media player on Vista, looked everywhere for codecs but the ones i find either don't work or i have to pay for? The files are .avi and xvid ? I need one of those all in codec packages?

Try that, I also use VLC. Just about playing anything you through at it. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

There's a Vista Codec Pack floating around somewhere which is pretty good.

VLC is a good media player but it has no Library function and no integration with Windows Media Center, which is a must for me.

For some reason WMP in Vista is really rubbish. GOM player ftw!

It's not specifically WMP in Vista, it's just WMP 11.
I upgraded WMP to Version 11 on my media centre PC... it broke BBC iPlayer's content protection meaning I couldn't watch anything. Took me about 2 hours of pissing about downgrading it and deleting stuff before it would work again.

WMP on my pc is the only media player that wont play wmv file correctly
think its some kinda codec issue, but VLC, Winamp and Media player classic are fine.

ONLY USE VLC. there is no need for any other program ever, appart from possible quickalt and realalt.
Whatever you do, DONT USE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER!

Not a very good suggestion when VLC doesn't have a full-screen visual remote controllable interface (Windows Media Center) for use on home entertainment systems. VLC also doesn't have a library function. True its a fantastic piece of software but I couldn't use it every day as a media player.

Re: Codecs for Windows Media Player Vista?
I also doesnt log on to the internet every time you open it, regardless if you open a file or just open the program. Uses less CPU, has dual screen support, volume normalisation, plays just about every file out the box with no need for additional codecs, can fix broken media files..... the list goes on.
Media centers are for half hearted computer users
who needs a library when you can just have a well orginised file system? also the open source ones out there have much more that you can do with them, and dont cost anything....

Yes, I already know the benefits of VLC player, I have done a remote deploy to over 350 workstations!
I have to disagree with your comment about media centers. So you can comfortably sit on a sofa with a remote control browsing a file system to see what you want to watch? If you do then you have a screw loose. Current setup involves a Vista media center PC with twin tuner DTT card, meaning I can record programmes and play them back at my own leisure, a fully functioning EPG, Online Media, my photo, music and video libraries (around 100Gb total), and all my HD content are just a few clicks away with the remote control. The machine is also equipped with Gens+ and ePSXe, and also with my Logitech Momo wheel I can fire up the race sims. At some point I am going to be building a MythTV backend and a frontend machine for the two main TV's in the house.
A well organised file system is only as good as the operating system used to browse it. Why use Windows Explorer when you can comfortably catalogue your entire music collection by ID3 tag? And to be honest having built up my music collection over a number of years I'm not going to sit around for two weeks filing all of my media folders into artist/album modes. With the music collection I have even Foobar2000 with the file op's plugins will still take a number of hours, and won't sort out my duplicates.
also the open source ones out there have much more that you can do with them, and dont cost anything....
Last time I checked Windows Media Player doesn't cost anything
I just thank the lord I'm not putting my point across to an iTunes user!!
EDIT: How very interesting, here I am singing VLC's praises as a media player yet it doesn't understand the WMA audio track in a WMVHD file....
