Ford Fair 2021: Escort Exhibition

To me it seems the Mk4 Escort is reaching something of a midpoint where it’s no longer a contemporary car but doesn’t seem quite old enough to be considered a classic. It might just be my interpretations though, as when I first really got into the scene it was still very much a current vehicle compared to the Mk1 and Mk2 which were already cemented with retro status. What makes things trickier is the presence of the two Carrera built examples which both features thoroughly modern modifications that certainly position them right here in the 2020s.

Airbags (the suspension kind) and AeroDiscs were nowhere to be seen when the Escort RS Turbo was at its peak, and it’s fantastic to see these 80s/90s icons still around and dropping jaws. Carl’s Porsche Rubystone Red (don’t call it pink!) beauty was the car of the show for me, and I suspect many others. The Rotiform AeroDiscs were painted Porsche Fashion Grey on one side and finished in carbon on the other and are 19” in diameter fitted over 17” wheels, which makes them look huge but without the disadvantages of such sizeable hoops.

Elsewhere there’s an RS1700T inspired rear wing, an exhaust that exits through the bodywork just in front of the rear arch, a carbon roof and bonnet slats. Inside there’s a cage and buckets trimmed in pink tartan, which also extends to the gear gaiter, door cards and even the boot trim and inside the glove box. Totally unique and flawlessly put together.
