xr2 rebuild 2 litre made me mind up now 22/3/12
Re: run around / project, mk2 xr2 updated 31/5, more new bits
jayrs :i really am 50/50 with the kit, if i was going for a non standard colour, like a nice blue, or something i would colour code the kit for sure, but something about the red and blck ya know
Yeh it keeps that original 80's styling theme with the textured plastic kit, i love the original look of the XR2 but i'm the same with all old cars, to me they only look good when standard looking because thats what people like about the car the fact it's old classic and not an old car trying to look newer imo
Jay, when i got some time this week i'll get them tanks in the post for you as i completely forgot.
pm me your address again mate.
Chris.

yeah will keep it black i think, but will paint it satin black as the surface has gone a bit funny, normal thing with xr2 kits.
will deffo be changine the wheels though, no matter how mint or scabby pepper pots are they just dont do it for me
i had forgot about them tanks too, will pm you know, let me know what i owe ya and ill sort ya out mate

Re: run around / project, mk2 xr2 updated 1/6, C/L fitted
seeing as sunday is a day of rest thats what i been doing today
untill i got bored! so i got the xr up in front of the house and decided to fit the central locking.
ive had this kit for about 4 years, a mate got it and i was gunna fit it to his girlfriends car then they spilt up and it never happend, and seeing as she paid for the kit he didnt want it back
it was ment for a 4 door but i just cut the wires off for the rear doors and fitted it up.
fitting was easy, im not found of the way the bars connect to the locking pin bar as shown in the pick below but hey, its gunna have to do for now, give it a month or 2 before i gotta take the cards off and re tighten them due to them slipping
passnger one fitted

drivers side

dont like the way it fixes by hey ho

its not as bad as it looks

little tip for anyone that has to feed wires through the door grommets, spray a bit of wd40 in there and lube up a bit of pipe, push the pipe in then feed the wires through the pipe then pull the pipe out

just to give you a idea of where the solinoids are fitted on the door

i also fitted a mk3 leather gear gator and gear knob, had to trim the lugs off the bottom of the mk3 plastic part that goes into the centre consol and fix it to the plastic bit from the mk2, mainly due to the mk2 one being a little different in shape and size.
worked very well but im gunna change the way it fixes together as it creeks a bit in first and second so will replace the staples with some small self tappers, when i get round to it

im not gunna fit the recors now, im thinking i might just fit the wing backs i have too, so thats on the to do list and i will be fitting a rs1800 black leather steering wheel too, mainly due to the fact i have all these bits in stock

Re: run around / project, mk2 xr2 updated 2/6,new steering wheel
rain stopped play on anything today so i just done a bit.
wanted to fit a different steering wheel so i cracked on and done that.
the mk3 steering wheel doesnt fit, so a bit of modding was needed

had to grind the back down to allow clearance

cut the little notch for the indicator canceler

due to the mk3 wheel being set back a bit more than the mk2 the steering coweling needed opening out, it doesnt really show that much when the steering wheel is on but im gunna get another and see if anything a bit neater can be done

finished!

ill be after a centre cap for it thats not from a turbo, but that will do for now, im sure i got one somewhere

Re: run around / project, mk2 xr2 updated 7/6,new steering wheel
update time.
while waiting for the guy to come to look at the lane to see if the lorry will get round (see frst rebuild thread for that) i decided to do some bits on the xr,.
first up, fitted drilled and grooved disc to it, they wasnt new, they came fron jonfrs and were like new so plenty good enough.
i decided i had had enough of looking at the duck tap on the bumper so replaced the conner that was broken.
also today i picked up a complete 1.6 zetec engine, i only need parts off it for the 2 litre like the sump etc etc and i give £40 for it, thats more than the whole mondeo cost me
, anyway its worth it as i havent gotta pi$$ about at a scrap yard removing bits etc, and it came with starter and alternator and complete inlet manifold.
the block will be weighted in, head keep for practis on the valve machine when its up and running, crank ill be sold on, anyway, it was collected in my mates van then put in the back of the xr2, it went down a tad but hey ho its all good
only pics i have so far, didnt see any pointof taking picks of brake disc and a bumper

more updates soon

Re: run around / project, mk2 xr2 updated 19/6 engine work
well after doing the floor in the garage for the rs (see rs thread) i had a bit of time free so done a bit of de greasing and painting.
yesterday i fitted new crank seals both ends as well as new gaskets for the oil pump and crank seal housing, i also fitted the 1.6 sump and pick up aswell as the water pump from the 1.6
oh and poped in the 1.6 dip stick and tube.
i decided today to do a bit as said above, clean the sump off and gave it a coat of silver alloy paint, and well got carried away and painted the alternator bracket (cvh one fitted) oil pump, water pump, the head
i have a pair of new cam seals which ford dicked me £12 for and i need to fit them, hence why the belt is not fitted, but i gotta say, ive never had to take a pully of a zetec engine before untill yesterday when i took the pullies off the 1600 cams, and boy am i disapointed in ford!
no fcuking woodrift key or even a pin in the cams to stop the pullies spinning
, for those that have never taken one off it relies on the tightness of the bolt to stop it rotating.
ok ive not heard of one coming lose and the pully spinning on the end of the shaft but come on, im considering drilling the pully and the end of the cam and putting in a small pin.
it would be close to the centre so it wont throw it out of balance before anyone says
and yes the cam shaft is drillable, i tried it on the old 1600 cams
anyway enough of that, a few pics of the engine now as i know people like to see pics

just gotta decide what colour i want the rocker cover, was gunna do it red but im now thinking a darkish metalic blue like electric blue or something

i might refurb the pepper pots but the 15's from the rs will be going on it.
the 1.6 head im sure will fit the 2 litre but the inlet and exhaust ports are far to small so about as much use on a 2 litre block as a concrete block is to a drowning man.
however, the guy i got the 1600 zetec from said he had a 2 litre also, with 1.6 stuff fitted i.e sump etc and thats was £40 too.
i'll find out if you want jon, see if he still got it

Looking ace, i shall be picking up my 2.0 Zetec tomorrow - and that will be finding its way in to my B reg mk2 fiesta
. What loom do you intend on using? I shall be going for a DESK ecu and maybe a fiesta si loom, hopefully that will work. What are you proposing to do for the fuel side of things? I intend on using the european mk2 efi tank.
Hopefully we will be doing the wiring at the same time, that way when i get stuck i can pester you for help, lol
Keep up the good work Jay,
Gareth.

Re: run around / project, mk2 xr2 updated 19/6 engine work
alright mate, will be using a SI engine loom prob on a DEEP ecu.
fuel tank side, ive heard of these EFI tanks but never seen one, or even seen one for sale come to think of it so will be making my own, if i could get a efi one for it i would but the plan for now is to rob bits from a EFI tank, i.e the the top hole for the sender/pump and the bottom of the tank with the baffle in, and basicly weld them into a spare mk2 tank i have.
wiring wise, yeah no probs, get stuck give me a shout

er yeah dunno how that happened
this was my first car, B reg XR2, had about 120k on it but half shifted so think milage wasnt true as it had white dials and standard ones in the boot, but still, smoked a bit but was good fun, soon sold it on and went for a red xr2, then i got my RS is november 98 when i was 18, well 18 and half

my second

had a fair few cars from then to know too, some scrappers/breakers, so were to be done up and sold, others just plain run arounds, just only 1 more was wight and that was a 2i i stripped

Re: run around / project, mk2 xr2 updated 21/11 engine work
thought i would just bring this back as its been a while.
once i have the turbo sorted on my rs and its out the workshop, again
the xr2 will take its place ready for some work.
dunno when work is gunna start due to time and other things, but for now ill be looking to gather some parts up so when it starts i have plenty of bits about to crack on with and hopfully time isnt wasted.
the other week me and my dad picks up 3 air tools for a tidy £45, they were a bosch air jig saw, a impact gun (another one) and a finger saw, only really wanted the finger saw but it was a job lot so got them all.
the finger saw will come in handy for removing the arches inner and outer as a grinder is a pain in the ar$e as anyone who uses one will know.
also picked this up on ebay, it finished today and won it for £9 plus a fiver postage

and i cant remember if i said but i got a outer arch and some new boot boards from nomad (collected fordfair thanks to clark) so if anyone has any xr2/mk2 fiesta bits they think i may be interested in let me know via pm
so far i have
battery tray with inner wing part
passanger wing
1 outer arch, passage side i belive
would be looking to get the following
bonnet (new or used but rot and dent free)
drivers wing
front panel
drivers and passangers sill ( although full sills not needed)
bottom parts of rear quarters
drivers door
boot lid (new or used but rot and dent free) or ill fix the one i have
and yes im sticking with the NA 2 litre zetec, which is nearly complete to go in, just needs new timing kit fitted and bobs ya aunt
im also gunna be getting one of these at some point, just makes things easier
hand held spot welder

cheers dude.
yeah spot welder makes it easier to put panels on like that, not needed if im honest, we have a mig welder, arc welder, tig welder and gas welding bottles etc, but no spot welder.
no thats a lie we do have a spot welder but its nothing like this, and we have never used it and tbh prob never will as it looks like it was made to do a certain job only
how ever, we have no argon gas for the tig, our supplier of, "on the sly" Co2 is no longer on the job so Co2 is hard to get now, and gas welding is just a pain
, but comes in handy for brazing bits on
i missed out on a spot welder on ebay tonight because i wasnt about to pay the price it went to, not saying it wasnt a fair price but i was hoping for something cheaper
but only becuase i'll be spending £400 pc bits this month and dont wanna skint my self out, so if i have to wait to get one ill wait but yes it will make life a lot easier all round
also, i know have lined up to get at the weekend a fuel tank from a 1.1 CFI 92 fez, my plan as ive said before is to chop bits out of it and braze them into the mk2 tank, this way it will give me a swirl pot in there and enable it to be a "in tank pump" fuel tank

Re: run around / project, mk2 xr2 updated 21/11 engine work
hope so mate, but even when the rs is fixed, im leaving it in the garage untill such time as i have nother under cover place for it, which shouldnt be too long.
i have a garage near me arranged and sorted, im just waiting for the door to be fixed which im gunna chase up this week thinking about it, but then the rs can be shifted to that, and the xr put in the workshop.
that said, it gets fcuking cold in that workshop as theres no heating of any kind, and i refuse to work on the car in such cold like i did with the rs, as things never go right, and you never seem to get much done when ya freezing cold
but who knows mate, i belive i install is coming up at some point with work so may have a very large A/C unit to be disposed off, so ifthinking along the same lines as me
oh and i should say, A/C units not only put cold cold air, but they can be switched via a valve (built in) to put out hot air
not counting chickens on that one though but we see, what ever happens it needs heat down there
