Trackday People....
Hello all...
With the car currently away at Grove Garage been mapped i am looking into a few different tyre options.
Im looking for a road legal track tyre.. needs to be 15's.... All seem to be 195/50/15..
Few questions are... Whos run with that size and did you need to make any arch mods??? What tyres have people had experiences of??
Cheers

Re: Trackday People....
R888 are probably the best ones available
Yoko 048r are very good as well, but I wouldn't recommend either of those for the road, for a couple of reasons
The first is they are pretty poor in the rain, the second being they wear fairly quickly and being expensive tyres, they are worth just using for the track to prelong their lives for what you actually bought them for.
There are other track tyres available of course, I will be buying some R888's soon
Arch mods are needed though for them on 15's

I have had r888 on with minimal scrubbing only under on the limit corner would they rub. They where scrubbed tyres though off my mates rs200 replica with a red top Vauxhall engine in it

Re: Trackday People....
I've used the following tyres,
Yokohama A048R's (Medium fronts and soft rears on fwd)
Yokohama ADO8's (not the latest R compound)
Hankook (forgot which ones)
Toyo 888's.
Best one i found was the A048R's athough the ADO8's weren't far behind in the dry but better in the wet.
Hankooks made the car understerr too much for my liking.
888's were very good for a few laps and then went off very quickly!

T1r's are the best compromise I've found. Fairly soft compound and not bad in the wet. Full on track tyre I'd recommend r888's, blue compound I think which is medium, was a few years back now though

Re: Trackday People....
I haven't experienced 888's or ad08's myself but my pal had a set of each on a track day nova and said the yokies out performed and outlast by quite a while compared to the 888's . Would be too soft for road use I would have thought wouldn't last long at all lol
As for non semi slicks iv tried t1r's and maxxis maz1's and the proxies are ok but crap steering feel and quite all or nothing there's not much feedback when pushing them to the edge it either grips or doesn't lol
Maxxis were brilliant gripped just as well in the dry if not better and a tonne better in the wet, they also have great feedback and feel through the steering brought a lot more confidence pushing it to the edge.
they also last a heck of alot longer considering I not got 2.5k out of the front pair of proxies with hard driving, same driving I had 5k on the maxxis and still loads of life left in them.
If your going for non semi slicks I would fully recommend the maxxis

Definitely don't use road legal track tyres for everyday use if you can help it. As people have said above, they're useless in the wet. Slightest bit of standing water and just glide! The blocks are just too large to displace the water.

Re: Trackday People....
I've been using Kumho V70As for track the last year and I've been really happy with them (until ruining one at the weekend). They're available in soft, medium and hard compound, and I purchased the hard. I used them for a bit of road driving and I'd say they would probably last quite well over some of the other options that are only available in soft or medium. The rears are showing very little signs of wear with a few track days and about 1000 miles or so of road use. The fronts have had it, but most of that was due to the track day I did at the weekend where the track seems to have a reputation for destroying tyres! Prior to that, I'd done about six sessions or so of Combe, and a track evening at Brands Hatch, and the only wear was really on the outside edge of the front left tyre (to be expected!). I was very happy with the grip once warmed up (only about a lap of Combe required to get there)... Personally I never felt I found their limit at Combe. I did find it at Brands, but I think I was trying too hard!
I've just bought some Dunlop DZ03Gs to replace the fronts I've ruined. I'm not going to use these on the road at all, but a lot of people rate them better than the 888s for track, and the price is roughly the same. You hear a lot about 888s going off quickly, but being incredibly grippy when at their prime.
I was going to buy A048s (I'm limited to choice because of my tyre size)... People seem to either be in team 888 or team A048! Don't hear of people complaining that the Yokos go off so quick.
I'd look to see what's available in the size you want and how they suit your budget. Any of the above are going to be far superior to what you're used to when on track. I wouldn't like to used them for spirited road driving though, not without being confident that they'd warmed up enough. A road tyre will always be more predictable in normal situations!
