the new daily, ST170 updated 30/6/15
my current, or now old, daily was a P reg escort 1.6lx

gotta say, nice motor to drive, the engine is sweet, but the clutch is going and theres other bits that would need doing for mot this year, plus the fact the arches are going and the boot lets in water from fcuk knows where, i decided it was time to move on to a new daily.
3 cars i had in mind mainly were a lexus is200 sport, fiesta zetec S and a focus ST170.
the missis decided the focus was the best and i agreed, although the fiesta would be cheaper all round, but with the kids a 4 door was better, so with the wife in total agreement
i went for the focus ST170.
picked this up today, isle of wight reg, although it came from dorset, 74k, as near as damn it, no service history
but every MOT from new.
drives sweet, a rear wheel bearing is noiesy, and it needs 3 tyres, like yesterday
some minor dings here and there, and a small crease in the passanger rear door at the bottom, nothing too bad though, but inside is bloody good, normal cracking to the leather on drivers seat but not as bad as a lot ive seen on ebay, but everything else works and is fine
oh, the radio has a issue, wont pick up radio stations but the cd player works
but im not that fussed tbh
over all its a good motor, short MOT but i dont see any reason it wouldnt go through next time once ive done the bearing and tyres.
was up for £1800, but in light of the above got it for a tidy £1500
ok its not a minter, but its 10 years old so i didnt expect mint for the price, but over all, tbh, if the bits were done and they got dent master out to sort the dents i reckon it could easy of been put up for £2.5k and sold for it, but it was a part ex and seeing the sort of motors they had there, the focus just didnt fit in next to the £40k bently
anyhow, touch wood and that, its a good motor as far as i could check it over, on the list of to do
new tyres
new bearing (might just do all 4)
new timing belt kit
service
maybe new battery as its got the one from when it was new still in there
oh, it has lexus rear lights, the missis likes them
and wants them to stay..... we will see, accidents happen and things get broken when cleaning a car
i should add, i chose to get a 4 door

these are from the ad on the net

future plans, well, refurb the wheels as one has bad kurbing, maybe get dent master or what ever there called out to do the dents, new front lights (lense is going foggy) and really thats about it, not planning to mod it in anyway, i know thats famous last words though
but i cant think of anything i really wanna do to it, maybe a stainless exhaust if the std one rots out in time but untill then, it stays

had to get my dad to drive it back as his insurance covers him on it, so ive only had a short time driving it on the test drive (with dealer plates)

very nice jay, a favourite of mine these, and you've gotten a cracking deal there! mad how cheap these are becoming, all due to a thing called economy?? not sure what that means but its helping us buyers!
lights do need to go lol, and apart from that your onto a winner imo, love the interior, focus's grow on me everytime i see someone buy one

That looks very tidy for the price, Jay. I think the EATC option may be rare in these too.
I always preferred the interior on these to the gaudy RS.

Nice motor Jay, these are a lot of car for the money. The Xenons and Digital Climate are rare options, unfortunately the headlamps do go foggy it's quite common on these models. I'd definetely lose the rear lights.
I think I may have a timing belt somewhere and I picked up a rear wheel bearing kit for one of these today. I've probably got a set of front mudflaps somewhere as well.

Re: the new daily, ST170
jony, i was always 50/50 with the mk1 focus tbh, really like the mk2 st if im honest but way out my range at the mo, but since really thinking about buying one and looking at them for sale they grew on me really quick, and after seeing it and driving it, well, i should of done it sooner tbh
mark, i gotta agree, the FRS trim is nice, but its a bit too blue for me, this is more toned down, although i did look at one on ebay that had full leather, dunno if that was std fit, or they took it from a mk2 as it was recro leather seats, but it looked nice in it, and the car was black too, but it was 220 miles up north, and with my buget, i just didnt have enough to buy the car (2k) travel there and back, and bring the focus back too, i reckon it would of cost £250 for traveling, as it was, the one i got with ferry's, fuel, and putting £30 in the focus (it only needed a tenner really..) it cost me £140 travel, £82 of that was just ferrys
mine you, i done my pieky bit
ferry was £44 return for the car we went in, and £61 one way for the focus to come back..... although i booked it as a return with a stupid return time so got the focus ticket for £38 and binned the retun part of it
im having a moment, EATC? you mean traction control? if so, this one has it fitted too
MircoJ, i m thinking a cleaning session at the weekend, although its clean anyway, might have to leave it another week......unless i can fine another way
tim, go for it mate, you only live once.
the climate pack was something i wanted, but i wasnt really too fussed if i didnt get it provided the car in question was worth it, but im glad its got it, and i fired it up on the test drive to make sure it worked too, last ting i wanted was for it not to work or the air con be out of gas, i know i can gas it my self (refigeration engineer) but it dont always mean the gas is gone if it dont work, but it did, so i was chuffed with that

they are tom, for what i paid, the milage and the extras, i was very happy, although i have to say, i wouldnt of minded the tinited rear glass... but its not the end of the world.
i though the xenons were std fitment on the st170? cant say ive ever seen one without tbh
i did expect something with the front lights, ive seen a few with cloudy lenses, and i remember how the mk1 mondeo lenses inside used to go funny over time so yeah, expected it, but they could of been a bit better
any bits you got, let me know what ya got and price mate, im prob gunna get some bearings this week though, belt will have to wait a week or 2 unfortunatly as i would be looking to do belt, and idler pulley, and prob a water pump too while im at it, cos i got tyres being fitted wednesday, but let me know what ya got and prices anyway mate

You'll have a fit when you find out the cost of the bearings from Ford - one bearing will cost almost as much as a decent tyre for your ST170! Will be able to do the ones that I've got very cheap.

i wouldnt go into ford for a bearing ever mate i can tell you that
ebay, £11 rear, £13 front, cheap ones i know, but but its better than the noisey one, or ones
let me know what ya got and cost mate, i would sooner fit a better quality bearing but its what the funds allow at this moment in time, be different ina few weeks, but i cant wait that long to drive it

with the front lamps, what happens is where ford issued the bulbs for these and the mk1 mondeo specificly, the small plastic behind the glass on the mondeo, and the glass housing on these are susceptible to UV radiation damage
once the bulbs blown, and joe bloggs comes along completely clueless to these special u.v filted bulbs, buys random ones from halfords and fits them, then after a year or so the Uv coming off the non filter bulbs turns the vulnerable plastics cloudy yellow
lol thats good then tim, ill let you off

the new daily, ST170
I have been looking for a good 5 door focus st170 for ages with full recaro leather interior
All the ones I have viewed have been dogs, so bought a fully loaded focus 2.0 Ghia for the misses but still on the hunt for the st170 of one comes up
Cracking cars, first thing I done on mine was get the steering wheel re trimmed and made slighty thicker

cant really answer that tbh mate, not untill i start driving it after tyres are fitted.
when i got it, it was just above the red on fuel, put £30 in, done about 60-70 miles i think, and the guage didnt move much from what my dad said (as he drove it home) will let you know though.

oh breaking news everyone!!!!!!!!!!
last night, the wife agreed the lights will go
in favour for some smoked ones on ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320660692627? ... 1438.l2649
a mate of mine keeps on about swapping his ones with my ones (hes are only std items) me wanting them off asap would do a swap as i really dont like them, the wife on the other hand, has said and i quote,
"i dont fu.cking think so, if he wants them, hes pays half towards the new ones you want, and gives us his olds ones as well or they stay on the car"
how can i argue with that when she has agreed to get rid of them, just hope my mate has got £30, i really want them off the car

tried a different head unit today, worked fine, so proves the ford one is up the spout.
called the scrappy to see if they had any, the guy that works there has one with the same problem as mine, but said hes never seen one come through there yet, so thats that for a std replacement
insured it today, and the tyres are being fitted tomorrow morning

Re: the new daily, ST170
i will be mate, more pressing things first though, such as bearings, got the tyres fitted today, went for a drive, and i cant tell which one it deffo is as it sounds like there could be more than one on the way out, so i gotta get it up in the air and spin the wheels up.
also, i found the thermostat housing leaking today, im just about to go and have a proper look at it now ass if its the seal or if its the casing.
i know stat housings are common cos there plastic, i accepted the fact i would prob need to address it at some point in the future, but not this soon
so im a little disapointed, but over all just a case of $hit happens
the joys of s/h cars eh
and yeah, it is a bit quite lately

its 10 years old mate, things are bound to go wrong, cant go through life worrying about what might go wrong with a car and avoid such cars, other wise i would still ride a fcuking bike
with any s/h car, you gotta expect to spend a bit of money, things like brake pads, thermostats, service etc, would be the most likey things to expect, and i always do a cam belt change when i get a s/h car as soon as i can even if its not due, but its peace of mind, after all, you dunno what sort of monkey has been working on the car before you and what corners they might of cut, that you dont know about, and couldnt check when looking at the car, untill a problem shows up.
anyway, im not gunna cry over a rubber seal thats a couple quid

It's an extremely common problem on the black top.
Jay - the earlier Bakelite housings from the silver top don't suffer as badly, so that may be a cheaper fix if the problem turns out to be the housing itself.
