Stupid Window Tinting Laws

Postby BigUKG on Tue Mar 03, 2009 7:46 pm

I was talking to my big brother yesterday about the black Mk4, saying I was considering getting the windows tinted, apparently you cant even tint the drivers side window now or you just get pulled over and they rip it off there and then

Wonkers.

no you are only legally allowed to tint the rear three windows and not the front ones. The law may be that there is a certain level of tinting allowed for the front but tbh the fuzz aren't gonna use much discretion because it'll be too hard to tell how much is too much tinting.

Thats why the police have light meters to test tints.

Technically, the law says your not allowed to tint the fronts, but you can get away with having tints if they are not too dark, and let at least 70% light through.

I've had light smoke tinted windows on my car for ages now, and driven all over the country with them - mostly at night, and police have never said a thing about it. Even when going down motorways when there are no lights apart from the odd ones every now and then, which makes it even harder to see through the tint, police havent done anything. So you can get away with it, as long as its not stupidly dark!

I had mirror tints for 3 years till some one put my windows through. never had any probs.
that was 4-7 years ago. test the tint make sure its legal 80% light to be safe and sorted.

Or roll your windows down when you see or know their about.

Or as a friend of mine did took the door cards of and removed the glass when copper told him to take them of or get fined and points I do beleive.

You can have the front windows tinted but it must let 70% light through.

I had tinted windows in my 206 and got stopped, once the film was removed had it re-tested by vosa at the traffic police control and the standard glass only passed by 2%, so it would have to be so light it not worth tinting.

The police can't remove it, they will just order you to do it on spot, or issue you with a thing to say you car isn't fit for the road.

Thanks for the replies, just found this which says 70% light through on all front side (what Danny said) and 75% for windscreens on cars used before 1985 which hardly applies anymore.

The windows on the mk4 are already tinted slightly green as standard but unlikely they stop much light getting through?

Reckon I'd be safe enough with 75% all round

Alex - Kent police are hot on this - I wouldn't touch the front glass at all - the mk4 and mk5 have the green tinted glass, and anything more it will fail the light test, best bet is just to not touch the front windows at all, wouldn't be worth the risk.

And if your not going to touch the front then don't bother doing any of the windows, as it looks crap with just the rears done :P

Never really been a fan of tinted windows.I had em briefly on my first car but at night it was terrible! Plus i reckon it looks gash and cheap on anything other than new rangerovers, chryslers ect....

It would look a bit cheap and a bit gash on the black mk4 if I could only do the rears! Might just about get away with it if I could do all of them, but its on to worrying about how I'm gonna get hold of;

front n/s wing
pair of wishbones
alloy with decent tyre

my sister and her husband had a range rover with tinted windows and got pulled.

Even though the tints came out the factory like that they had to be changed because laws had changed since it was manufactured.
