Removal of front bumper (xr2i) and fitting of vr6 splitter

Postby 2iKRIS on Tue Apr 18, 2006 4:58 pm

Just basicly need to know how to go about removing the front bumper as i have ordered a vr6 front splitter and gather its easier to try to fit with the bumper off.
Also any tips on fitting the vr6 splitter would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I know how to take the bumper off its pretty easy...aslong as the bolts arent as tight as ****holes like mine were. lol

Firstly just unscrew the two screws in each front wheel arch...they're just in the inside lip of the arch...

Then you it gets a bit more tricky... you might find it easier to take the front two wheels off too, actually its best if you do...Then if your like me, Mr no alloys you might still have your wheel arch liners, take them out. Then get under the bonnet and unbolt the washer bottle..There's 3 bolts, 2 of them you can see from under the bonnet, the other one is inside the wheel arch... Then once you've (carefully) dropped it down and safely balanced it somewhere lol, you can get the the first bolt, it's just bellow the headlight...

On the otherside my car has the charcoal box thing or whatever it us infront of the other mounting bolt.. I dunno if Xr2i's have these...but anyway, it's simple to take out if you have to, just undo the bolt at the top and it unhooks, then disconnect the tube on the top of the can and you can take it out to get to the next bolt...

I think they're 13mm bolts for the bumpers, and 10mm for the washer bottle and charcoal can thing...just to let you know cause i couldnt find my 13mm socket bit and had to use an adjustable spanner, as it was too late to go and get one cause my car was in a million pieces.

Hope this helps, bare in mind, my cars a mk3.5 classic quartz 1.1, so im not 100% everything will be the same. But good luck, should look great man!

Or you could just jack the front of the car up and unscrew the 4 bolts - i have a 2i and didnt require removing the washer bottle or anything else for that matter - but what ever you find easiest really - 2 of the bolts are in a pain of the ass situation tho ( 2 inner ones) just takes a lil time thats all. :oooh: :)

As for the VR6 chin - well mines been sat in my garage for nearly a yr now after various attempts to get it on but to no avail - its a baxtered to fit and i just dont have the patience to do it - it doesnt help when a few select people on ft have got them but arent willing to help :x :oooh: but i suppose thats probably because they dont want anyone else to have them  :P

Well today i attempted to fit the splitter.
Gave it a go without taking the bumper off and just jacked up the front end.
Anyways here is the result. Took about an hour to put on with drilling etc and i think it dont look bad. Just the sides that could possibly do with being a bit neater.
Anyways a pic for you....

I found it easier to put on that way up and from the pics i had seen on other cars i thought it would be different this way up.

Blimey well done mate you fitted it yourself when i initially got mine i thought the same tried to give it a go but just wansnt happing. After speaking to Atif aka 'Xr_dub' where i got the idea from he just recommend me getting it done from a bodyshop which i did about 3 months later   and remember the guy saying i would've charged you more if knew it was this much of an hassle to fit to the price he quoted me. But luckily he was my uncles mate and i hardly paid anything to get it fitted compared to what other places would've charged me.

But heres some pics of how mine looks. This is the best they could do and it took them nearly 2 days to do it properly and that was with my bumper off. I like the end result, job well done imo

I really do think that you should try putting it on the other way round how its supposed to be but still looks nice as it is. Like the others said try to get some better pics up.

And Faith its not like that at all theres not many ppl on here who have em and the ones do probably just get them fitted instead. And if you search 'Jay246' did reply to a post asking on how to fit it. So you cant say we dont want anybody else to have em just that we dont anybody going through the same hassle

Thanks mate :)
I will probably have a go when i have a spare day of gettin it on the other way round but it will do for now.
The main problems i found was A) its too long for the fiesta bumper B) the sides are very hard to get perfect (mine are not perfect but not too bad for the time being)

No problems.

Yeh the actuall lip/spoiler is too long for the fiesta bumper and mine was trimmed down from the middle on both sides i think to make it look perfect and line up.

I dont know how the side things were done though . But if you see some other fezzy's with the same lip/spolit they've trimmed it out if you know what i mean.

Ill see if i can dig up some pics of what i mean

Image

So you can maybe try that or keep it the way it is and try to line it up. I remember i when i was getting mine fitted and couldn't decide weather to keep the side trim or not so we just left it :Q

But you've done most the hard work so i reckon you'll able to finish it off even i couldnt do that

GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the advice reisskahn :)
I quite like the way the sides on yours has been cut out but think it could be quite difficult to get spot on. Will deffo consider it though when i attempt to neaten it up.
Thanks

i fitted 2 of these as one ripped off and destroyed a bumper lol, i found it real easy to fit. i took the bumper off for ease, cutting the middle was simple, i drilled pilot holes in the splitter and bumper and trimmed the sides down to fit around the bumper, and used excess plastic from cut offs as brackets that u cant see to hold it up :)

o and i had no gaps :)

any help needed pm me :)
