Reasons for new steering wheel?

I always wonder,what are the reasons for a new steering wheel? Alot of the time its black momo wheels that I see and is it just for the looks or does it improve the feel and handling?

Alot of the after market wheels are smaller so you have to turn it more to get round a tight corner, they usually have a nicer look\grip than base model cars. Something like an RST has a leather wheel which has a nice feel. Guess its a styling thing at the end of the day.
