Re: Nick's VTS
OK, so in preparation for Castle Combe this weekend, I picked up a 60k gearbox from a 106 GTI

and a set of clocks from the same car (has oil temperature and oil level readouts)

So the process began:

Got it all back together:

but it wouldn't start! After a hell of a lot of research, it turns out my starter motor was missing a dowel which aligns it to the ring gear. Sourced a dowel, bolted it together, and it lives!
So now it's had a new gearbox, driveshafts, clutch, and ready to go!
Long drive tomorrow!

Re: Nick's VTS
How easy is it to change a vts box lol used to change them on my 106 gri and vtr's/vts' i had. The 1st box took me and an mate 7hrs from start to finish (we where 18 and learning as we went along). Last box took me 3.5hrs on my own from start to finish lol
They are so simple, like a mk3 fez

Re: Nick's VTS
Slight update.
First, I cleaned it.

Then took it to Modified Live at Brands Hatch. Two track sessions, first a disaster, second really good.

(The front wing arch trim panel flew off the day before the trackday - this has now been replaced with a new one. The old one is somewhere along the dual carriageway section of the A20.)
Now booked into a trackday on the 25th at Brands, so made an effort to get it working properly. New brakes all round, after I'd got these buggers off:

Also got a new tyre for the rear to replace a cracked old one, and a new alloy for the front which doesn't have a flatspot. I do have a new knocking from the front right suspension which I suppose I'll find out what that is this weekend!

Re: Nick's VTS
Your knocking will be a broken droplink or a strut top bearing!
Might be good for you to invest in some Group N strut plates!!

Droplinks are new as of about 4 weeks ago. Did hit a killer pothole the other day, now assuming its the strut top bearings.

Yeah I think that'll be the plan at least when it stops fudgekin raining lol. Probably cut the dash down a bit as well, get rid of the passenger airbag etc... Alarm wiring, RCL wiring and immobiliser wiring can probably come out too.

Re: Nick's VTS
OK, a little bit to update then!
This car has a serious water ingress issue, and the soundproofing behind the dashboard is absolutely waterlogged meaning the windscreen mists up too easily, and various interior plastics and fabrics go mouldy extremely quickly. It needs to come out both for weight and rust prevention purposes.
On Sunday, I set about removing the dashboard and cutting out as much as I could with the time I had available:

So far, some of the alarm wiring has been cut out as it was malfunctioning anyway, and will be tracing back and chopping out the stereo wiring, airbag system wiring (ecu and bags already removed) and as much excess wiring as possible (rear window wiper, rear washer, heated rear screen which doesn't work etc).
A little bit of a backstory for the next one - after I'd started progress with this one, a good friend of mine wanted to join me on trackday adventures so bought himself a MK1 VTS Saxo which had some tasty parts on it. After a few months, he decided he needed the money for his upcoming wedding and sold the car. The car turned out to have been bought by the brother of a friend, so I made sure I got dibs on the manifold

Went and picked it up on Sunday. Now got to find a bit of time after the dash work to fit it!

Re: Nick's VTS
Manifold and new lambda fitted. f**k it's quick. The old lambda must have been absolutely shagged.
This weeks pre-Lydden problems:
dash clocks don't work at all (fuse blowing)
suspension strut tops knocking

Re: Nick's VTS
Pointless update but whatever, I don't care.
First of all, the shock absorber collapsed. Turns out there was no resistance in it at all and thats what was knocking.

Replaced both sides with new shocks and new top mounts - now all OK.
I also had to strip back the dash to find out what the problem was that was causing the instrument cluster fuse to blow - turns out I forgot to insulate some of the alarm wiring I cut when stripping out the malfunctioning system.

Now back to normal, with working dials

Re: Nick's VTS
And here’s the biggest job of them all so far. The paint was absolutely shocking up close - patches of primer were showing, every time I washed it it got worse, and knowing that parts of the car were a different colour really did my nut in, so I decided to start painting it Matt Black. Started by stripping the car down while doing a test coat on the front end:

It was at this point I decided against the satin black - and chose a colour I thought would look good…

It still needs a lot of work to get right, VT kit needs going back on and painted, and needs to have a couple more coats. It was done with a roller!!

Since then, I’ve taken it to Brands again, and since replacing the shocks, drop links, and discs and pads it’s handling a dream

C+C Welcome!

hb69 :Didn't even mention the silent saxos trip to combe
In between the paint job and brands hatch it went to combe, competed two track sessions and came home in one piece, ish, despite losing the volt which holds the dipstick tube on. I'll try and dig out some pics lol
