mikester :on the same principle could this work in the front using the map light? say if you could fit the 4inches into the light compartment with a lot of bodging....

probably would be illegal if left on cuz its a distraction to other drivers. not sure if it would even fit.

Mikester - You can get a replacement led for the map light from Ultraleds.co.uk anyway, just whip the old bulb out, and stick the blue/red/green/whatever led in place.

Just a quick question, as I was gonna use a neon tube or cold cathode for the same mod.

I was speaking to someone who said if I do, I'd need to put an in-line fuse (for 12v) in between the two live wires, thus:

-----(Boot light earth wire)--------------(Neon/Cathode earth wire)-----

-----(Boot light live wire)-----[Fuse]-----(Neon/Cathode live wire)-----

I would have thought that if I was wiring it up to come on with the boot light supply, it would already be protected by the fuse up front in the normal fusebox? Thanks for any help

Yes it is protected.
In fact I blown the fuse once when I was messing around.

The gf is NOT impressed, she says if I can can waste money on these she can go waste some money on some new shoes, I'd like to see her get new shoes for under a tenner!!!

One question, can you extend the white wires to the tubes or have I just fooked mine up

I added in some speaker wire and the tube in question hasn't worked since, I've not had time to check my connections yet though, the gf........ :rolleyes:

lol speaker wire isn't designed to pass that type of current. you'll have to buy some proper wire from halford or *cough*carbar*cough*. i had to extend my wire as i'm sure everyone did here, jus soldered loadsa wires together cos i couldn't be arsed to buy some more wire

my m8 has a J reg fiesta 1.1 Bonus and doesn't have the boot lamp just a blank, would the wires for it be hanging around near it.
Theres a pin switch near the boot catch is this the switch for it

Most speaker wires are quite thick and can pass a lot of current.
But of course normal wires are easier to work with.

The wires might be behind the turret cover (driver side), but NOT the contact plate.

Can anyone offer a solution i've fitted 2 12" cathodes to my footwells nice and out of sight, rigged them up so they come on when either door is opened and also rigged them up to the switch. They look great when the doors are opened but as the door wires are connected to the interior light the moment you press the switch when driving the roof light comes on, oh and also if you switch them on while you have your headlights on the door open buzzer comes on cos it thinks the door is open.

Only thing i can think of is to fit an extra plunge switch to either door so i'm not using the interior light circuit.

Any help please

Hi,

Wire +ve to yellow/black wire (lights on live) from stereo, clock, or dash.
Wire -ve to the earth wire after the door pin switch, where the wire can be reached if you open up the footwell plastic trim panel.

thats roughly what i've got but its the door pin earth wire that i'm having problems with, the moment the switch is flicked it assumes the doors are open because the third earth which is permantley connected is completing the circuit.

The only thing i can think of is a 3 may rock switch like the interior light one or, a seperate door pin on each door.

Ohh sorry I thought you mean you only want to footwell lights to come on when the doors are open.

So yes, 3 way switch seems to be the only option...
Unless you want to wire from the footwell to the interior light (footwell -> dash -> A piller -> roof -> interior light) then you can use the interior light circuit obviously.

Ive also noticed if you buy 1 pair of 12 inchers, the postage is 1.99 but if you buy 2 sets the postage is 5.49 , how did they work that out? i think im going to order one set then order another seperate, still only works out at 3.98 postage that way!

Good guide. I have just got myself a Mk3 and that sounds quality way to start off adding to it

But...
I have no boot light at all, and no wiring there if there was one before.
How did i wire it up in this case? Can i connect direct to the battery?

Had a go at doing it myself last night - only I have two problems:

1. The sticky pads and cable ties are a load of crap and won't keep the cathodes fastened to the plastic bits at the side of the boot (especially since I have some speakers mounted there, there is not much space).

2. The wiring from the cathode tube on the opposite side of the car to the transformer won't reach across, so I'll need to solder some more wire on
(though don't really know what kind of wire to use)

Has anyone come up with a decent solution to both these?

wywywywy :May I recommend buying the dual 12" kit instead of the 4" one, as 12" is of better value and much brighter... if you have enough space

I especially like the fact that I have a switch in the boot >_<
Because when I clean the interior (takes about two hours to clean properly), I keep the boot open, and I don't really want the lights draining the battery.
