Thanks guys. No updates for a few weeks now, I'm sending the car away to a classic car restorers to have the entire shell bare metalled and resprayed in the Quattro car colour (Noveau Red). I wasn't 100% happy with my finish, it wasn't to show standard and I prefer Noveau to Aubergine :D

The paint job is 3-4k, but I'm having the lot done, like inside wheel arches, inside of the roof etc. so that it looks like it came out of the factory in that colour. The wings I fitted weren't genuine Ford so I'm having a pair of genuine wings fitted that I saved for the Quattro project. I'm also swapping over the the RS kit so it's bumpers etc.

For a nice job you can pay anywhere from 3k to over 10 :o

Edit: These guys are doing it: http://smsautospray.co.uk/pastwork.htm

Ha, well, Ian has all the engine components but he hasn’t assembled them because the spec keeps growing all the time! The head is built up – the spec of that won’t change as one of my requirements is a good idle and good driveability. The port job and cams spec has been made with that in mind which will limit the max figure to around 600bhp but with better torque lower down. I’m not going for 600 BTW as I’d rather have a more responsive engine throughout and better reliability. 550bhp would be nice.

I ordered a custom dry sump pump from Pace nearly a month ago now and I’m still waiting for it, not very impressed with the service TBH! It will be delivered to Ian who is giving the engine to the local engineer to get the A/C, PAS etc. fitted along with the dry sump pump. I’ve asked Ian to do something different for the inlet and he is looking forward to doing something different to the usual Area 6 item, which is still a very good bit of kit, but I’m looking for something more advanced.

It's going to be seriously entertaining, best of all I want it to sound like a standard car until I get on it

Some bits of advice I can pass on:

Zetec Thermostat housings
The two-piece series 2 Black Top Thermostat housing is pretty dire for Turbo applications as leaks are guaranteed to happen eventually, which in extreme cases has resulted in engine failures on the Mk1 FRS. The Bakelite type housing is slightly better but still succumbs to leaks eventually, so I bought an alloy Thermostat housing from eBay for £9.99. These were fitted to very early Zetecs with the yellow oil filler caps and red plug leads. I originally thought Ford were cost cutting when moving to the plastic housing, but when the alloy one turned up in the post I realised they weren't - it weighs a ton! The alloy housing combined with the alloy cam cover add an unnecessary amount of weight. I will now go for a billet Womble housing.
DSC_0110.jpg

Fake goods
There are fake AP Racing CP5200 calipers going around, which I suspect are made from inferior materials. You can spot them as the front face is smooth, there are no AP logos on them, and they either come in gloss red or dark matt grey.
There are also fake Titan dry sumps doing the rounds, be careful of these - they are made form inferior materials and the pumps are an unknown quantity. You can spot them as there is not a Titan logo on the pan.

Bargain heated washer jets
I'm fitting heated washer jets and had chosen the Escort jets which have the same type of spray pattern as the Mk3. Ford kept the same design/fitment of jet but upgraded from a jet to a spray mist for the Mk3/4 Focus, Paynes part shop currently have these for sale at £2.93 - that's new genuine Ford! Search on ebay.

The fake calipers you are talking about are compbrake pro race 5 calipers. They use the same casing as the aps, but cheaper internals. Still good calipers IMO.
Where did you find the fake dry sumps mate? :o
Also do you want to sell the alloy thermo housing since your not using it!lol

escort mist jets?!

really or a typo?

i retro fitted a mk4 focus jet as a tester and it doesnt sit right, and had to do plenty of chopping for it to fit the mk3 bonnet

you got a part number or ebay link?

Seg - I know compbrake bought rights to manufacture their version, but IIRC they have the compbrake logo on them and they cost £360. The knock offs don't have a logo and go for a lot less. Maybe the factory ran off some on the sly? Not worth the risk imo. I'll give y ou a shout when I sell the housing. The sumps have been advertised in dubious places for a lot less they should.

Jon - Not Escort mist lets but the Focus version of the same jet. I had them on the Si amd all I had to do was use a Dremel to slightly enlarge the bonnet holes

The compbrake ones should be ok. I wouldn't have a problem with those. It's the ones on eBay in unbranded boxes that I'm suspicious about. They repeatedly sell for just over 200. Where's the profit margin in that? Makes me wonder what they're made from.

I expect they are made from gorgonzola. Lol

The compbrake parts have an aweful failure rate going by a lot of users on passionford. The nickname compromise brakes says it all really

Some more advice for people reading this: don't use a Mk5 back panel  It may look the same, and fit with a bit of tweaking, but the weather seal sits slightly outboard of the original and does not sit correctly on the Mk3 tailgate. Doh!

Luckily the complete Mk3 back panel is still available from Ford (£190 :o) so I'm having the body shop fit that and turn up the lower edge like RS Rob did to his.

Jay, I was going to have the Quattro shell dipped, but not this. I had the underneath blasted and it was all pretty good and I've put too much time into the shell now to have it stripped really. I've used a few cans of Dinitrol in all the seams and the 3m underneath so it should last for a few years.

Eddie, thanks mate. The dipping process is here: http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/for-cars.html#shells If I was starting out again on this project then I would do it, but my project has kind of grown and I'd already applied sealer and wax etc. so wasn't worth it for me. I'm not very good at making a plan and sticking to it otherwise it would have been worth it

If you get the shell dipped and coated it will come back without any wax/rubber/underseal and be in a primer ready for paint.
