That trailer looks like a magicians hat where you pull it and the rest of the car will come out.

I still say a Pontiac Firebird front end would've been the better choice, swings and roundabouts really.

Interesting approach sir, I commend you, and your forefathers 8)

he is staying with the exterior of the front end but adapting it and the mk5 chassis legs and bulkhead to accept it!

Alot neater job than my attempt at fitting the hydrolic clutch mounting section!

yeah at times looking at the project can be a bit disheartening, so if you take a back step at those points you always at some point get another burst where you want to work on the car again and it ends up bigger and better than it would of if you carried on when you simply didnt want to! :D

really cant wait to see this finished tho! it really is going to be an animal! :D

I've spent most of this weekend preparing the Mk5 front end. It's now just about ready to be fitted to my Mk3.

Supplies!
Image

It was mostly plain sailing, the trickiest part is where the inner sill joins to the front inner wing gussets (behind the sill in this photo):
Image

I've removed the wings, inner wing outer sections (not shown here - I'm keeping them for trial fitment), A Pillars, Scuttle (New one on order) and Floor:
Image

The Mk5 slam panel and supports will be coming off (10 spot welds) as a unit but for now its providing rigidity at the front. The Mk5 front end cosmetics are also completely different to the Mk3 - I'm going to modify the inner wings to accept Mk3 outers, also also the slam panel mounts to accept a Mk3 slam panel:
Image

As it stands, exposed seams ready for a clean up and coat of weld-through primer:

Yeah for sure - they make it so much easier if you want to polish the car after washing it! and more importantly the solid panel over the air filter housing :)

lol yes, I'm surprised you noticed the tiny little drain holes but missed the fact the scuttle panel has only 2 sets of louveres rather than 4! This is to keep water off of the pollen filter housing.

Full S3/TT Running gear as far as I know, IE box, modified drives hafts, prop and rear bits!

Last I heard yes a turbo'd ST170 engine built for torque and drive ability.

Re: Mk3.5 ST170 Turbo 4x4 (Quattro) project...Update 17/02/2008

Postby Excursion on Sun Feb 24, 2008 8:39 pm

Nothing particularly exciting to post pictures of this weekend. All I've done is strip off the sealer from the Mk5 front end, seam weld it and prepare all exposed seams for welding to my car.

I've also located some 909 items for the build in the shape of Racing Puma parts. For those that don't know the Puma is based on the Mk4/5 Fiesta, and the Mk5 front I'm fitting means I can use FRP lower arms and hubs (machined with a -1.5 degree strut angle) to extend my front track by 90mm (total) without compromising geometry.

If you've been following my thread you'll know I bought Sport Ka lower arms, hubs and steering rack to extend my track on my existing front end- as the Ka is based on the Mk3.5 Fiesta like mine. However, just like the FRST, the track 20mm extra track on the Ka was made up by a longer lower arms alone, therefore you can only go so far on these parts before camber is compromised.

I had a trial fit of an M3 front wing extension, I've had these for a year now! After a few minutes re-shaping I managed to get it to fit well.

I'll be honest mate, a lot of the time I'm too out ot of my head to do anything useful. I'm slowly getting a grip on it though.

I have the following Sport Ka parts:

Front hubs (they have ABS sensor machining - complete with sensors),
Lower arms +20mm,
Lower arm carriers (Phase 2 Ka versions - when the larger instrument cluster came in)
S Brace to suit above
Steering rack (High ratio, longer track rods)

I think that's it - I gave you the servo and linkage didn't I? If not I still have it - it's a brake booster rather than standard servo.

Question about the 4WD system Mark, are you using the Haldex system ?
If so isn't it torque sensing (so really 2wd and only 4wd when the it recognizes the wheels slipping)
Or have will you be using the Haldex chip to create it more over 50:50 power split ?
If you aren't using a Haldex chip no offense wont it be a bit silly as its just like having FWD most of the time
but have 4WD when the computer thinks u need it? plus with all the prop shaft extra weight etc etc ?
Im not trying to blaze your work alot of work has gone into this i can see and its great work !
I just have done work on Golf R32's and was under the impression that Audi TT and Audi S3 is the same 4WD system as the golf
(althou in bigger Audi's like the RS4 Audi Employ a full time 4WD)
sorry if it does seem I'm "having ago" or anything Nor Am I saying use the ford FWD as we all know its
a crock of s**t.
Project W
XR2i? You bet!

Everything is well researched, I wouldn't go about a project in any other way

Longditudinal mounted Audi's use a Torsen centre Diff. Transverse use Haldex (As do 2003- Porsche 996/997!).

I'm not using VAG electronics. I have full control of the diff from the dashbaord, from where I can manually control torque bias.
