Raymondo :Where did you get your sound deadening from?

BJ Acoustics in oldham :) Get the 'barrier mat' - it's very good, also the lead sandwich is good for the bulkhead/boot floor.

I weighed the bin bag with all the removed deadening and it was 8.5KG!

That thing was belt-driven to the extreme!

Looks great Mark, the grass mats and skirts will reflect rear transmission heat more efficiently than AlFoil. Keep it up :Q

looks good, why are you seam welding it though if your cutting a tunnel in it for the prop shaft?

Quick question Mark. Once you’ve welded, are your going to prep the welds at all, like sand them down slightly to get rid of the black around the edges? And them etch prime?

Rhinopower I shouldn't need to touch the existing tunnel if I get creative with the exhaust system. If I do I will simply extend the current tunnel by cutting off the top and welding an extra section on each side (retaining the original top).

sphinx Yes, straight away I sand them and and etch prime :)

Small update for today, more sealer removal and seam welding:

Image

Here is a shot taken in the N/S front wheelarch, directly behind where I've been working today. As you can see I have ideal penetration:

Image

All welding is sanded down and etch primed, I won't post pics as everything looks pretty much the same but with a coat of white primer :)

What do you do about the inside of the sill where you've been welding along the floor/sill (on the left of the above pic)?

I assume that's burning off the paint making it vulnerable to corrosion, so what can you do about preventing that?

Thank you gents :D

More of the same today, stripping off paint ready for welding. I'm using paint stripper for this:
Image

Welding was a nightmare, contaminents! I'm slowly going off the weld through primer as it doesn't fully dry this time of year and so affects the cleanliness of the weld. This is not ideal given the amount of time that is taken to exposing the bare metal!

So with this weld through primer, should you be able to strip the paint, prime it with this stuff and weld afterwards? Sounds as though it'd be good...if it worked! Change your update date matey :) That shell's a spanker :aviator:

looks like your welding is coming along well :D have you tried a clean and strip wheel (goes on a drill) to get the paint off Mark? ive found them very usefull as opposed to paint stripper :) Halfords sell them. probably the only usefull thing they do sell lol! they take the paint off but dont take away any metal.

very interesting matey :D

cheers guys :Q

Andy - Yes I have tried them, very good! The thing is though, for me at least, they don't seem to last very long considering what they cost. Mind you they make what is typically a complete ball ache of a relative doddle! I will be using them for the undersides as much as possible.

update
Firstly, in on a sat night updating my site, how lame! Anyway, I've been fairly busy on this for the last week; all of the interior seam welding is now complete. I need a few bongs and a good allnighter after all this scraping, that's for sure! I think this is the most tedious part of the project. I'm not so worried about working on the underside and I think that's because I'll be standing up with the car on it's side for most of it, so it's easier to have a few beers while I work

Ok, bought a new welder. I got a Murex on the recommendation of Mr Steve, fantastic piece of kit!
Image

I won't post up loads of pics as it all looks pretty much the same, but here is a sample of what's been done:

Image

Image

All of the roof has been done too:
Image

Check out the welding on this seam lip (1.5mm) - belter!!
Image

OK you probably get the idea, everything that can be done has been done.

Next it was etch primed, an then brush on sealer.

Image

I wanted to make the sealer appear neater than the OEM stuff, and carefully masked off the area surround the seam:

Image

It didn't look as good really, so didn't bother!

A few more pics:

Image
Image
Image
Image

And that's it! It's now ready to be turned so I can finally get on with mounting the diff :Q

Image
Image

I pondered which was the best way to go about organising my site for this project, do I write seperate, unrelated articles for each task undertaken or do I write an ongoing diary encompassing everything? I've decided to do both, so that articles are available for easy reference and the whole project has some continuity by way of a week-to-week diary.

I'm still working on the diary but I have written the 'seam welding' article which can be found here:
http://www.mwstewart.co.uk/index.php?c=cars_xr2i_seams

Getting bored of/not enough time to update the site though tbh!

Until next time.....SAFE :D

Not much of an update as I've been really busy. I've decided to make some modifications to the rotisserie stands. As it will make it a lot easier for me to have the drivetrain mounted whilst the car is on its side I wanted to make sure the mounting points on the car were up to taking the extra weight. The current mounting brackets use the bumper mounts, these are fine for the empty shell but wouldn't take much more weight.

At the rear I made two extensions that loop underneath the rear valence and sit against he rear chassis rails, from here the brackets can be bolted through the chassis rail and into the boot area via the OEM tow bar mounts.

Image
Image
Image
Image

For the front I made another bracket that went through the front tow eye recess in the valence and sat flush against the front cross member, this could then be bolted through into the 2 existing gearbox cradle mounts.
