the mk5 dials do suit the mk3 dash very well!

loking good mate! how hard is it going to be to get the mk5 heater matrix and box behind the mk3 dash and get everything to line up? from what i saw of the two when changing over they looked very different where the vent ducts came from and went to!

Richardson The car has no engine at the moment, the needles on the instruments are free to move as they wish (I had the unit upside down)

xrsi The two heater boxes are completely different, so I'm going to have to make ducting to linkt he mk3 dash and the mk5 vent outlets :)

Nothing too exciting I'm afraid, I've got exams in 2 weeks so busy with revision. The sunroof will be a while off yet. I've got a lot of welding and fabrication ahead before the '2nd fix' as it were :)

I've bought myself a welder so I can do my own steel fabrication from now on, and also seam weld the shell. It's a powerful one as far as domestic welders go and requires a 25amp supply. The standard domestic wiring installation supports 13amp.

Luckily in our garages we have decent wiring, and in the garage where my car is there are free slots on the consumer unit. I have added a 32amp circuit for the welder (standard MCB sizes are 16, 20 and 32).

2 spaces in the consumer unit:

Fit the socket (Blue 16amp socket, strictly this should be a 32a - but will get me up and running on medium power for now):

Today I ordered most of the wiring accessories that I will need for the project. I managed to get hold of reels of wire in colours that Ford used, which is what I was after. I'm now waiting for Webcon UK to get back to me re: Ford engine management connectors, then I can set about making a brand new OFAB engine management loom custom built to my car and it's one off main loom.

Wicked stuff mate - brilliant idea with the connectors (are you going for the push down release spring type like found on the XR2i injector rail loom's?) as both you and me know they're a pain when they go wrong ;)

Also - a good find with the wiring loom, care to divulge who is supply those wires in original colours because if push came to shove I could create a complete new loom using newer connectors on my own car if I had to! :lol:

I'm afraid I'm stuck with the mini-AMP connectors. Most of the engine sensors use them, as do the injectors :(

for wiring, go to http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/ and look for thin wall cable (its what Ford use). Well handy! :D

i got the SIP 130 for ease at the time, but kinda wishing i hadnt now cos the wire feed is a bit hit and miss and the gas seems to have a leak :(

Funny you should mention that! it's not brilliant at real low speeds, gas is fine though.

edit: Just rememberd mate, I'm running a 15kg spool. I will try an 8 to see if that makes a difference :)

Looking good mate, never used a SIP welder before, so would not be able to comment on it. My Murex has an excellent low speed capability though. (useless information!)

Best not to touch them mate. Unless that is you have part 'P' of BS7671, you cannot touch domestic installations, even in your own home.

Those little baby dis boards are easy! Big mummas are a pain, get a few 35mm2 5-Core SWA's in there, that makes it a bit more interesting!

The following types of work are non-notifiable:

Installing or upgrading main or supplementary equipotential bonding(f)

Notes:

(a)On condition that the replacement cable has the same current-carrying capacity, follows the same route and does not serve more than one sub-circuit through a distribution board

(b)If the circuit's protective measures are unaffected

(c)If the circuit's protective measures and current-carrying capacity of conductors are unaffected by increased thermal insulation

(d)Special locations and installations are listed below

(e)Only if the existing circuit protective device is suitable and provides protection for the modified circuit, and other relevant safety provisions are satisfactory

(f)Such work shall comply with other applicable legislation, such as the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations

It's all technicalities really, it's for the safety of joe public in case you ever sell the house on. It's not checked though, theres no way of proving who did the wiring.

Cheers man, it's well easy though. That steel was 5mm thick, I went a little too hot if anything but I find I get on better that way.

wont be long till you have to have certain amounts of certificates for wiring, (like you already need for other areas) but as you stated small mounts done neatly and noone will know.

how on earth do you get the underside so tidy, mine needs doing asap so i'm looking into doing it, need a couple of little bits of weld and generally cleaning up. scotchbrite pads? what are these? sorry if it sounds dumb but i've never worked on the underside

Hello JJ,
To get the underside clean I am using petrol with brillo pads, a toothbrush and pieces of rag. This removes the wax and dirt only, the pink/yellow underseal you are left with can be removed by the Scotchbrite pads. I recommend you use an angle grinder with the pads. Search for Scotch-Brite on the folowwing site:

RS aren't cheap, but I didn't look around for any more stockists TBH as time is short at the moment.
