knuckles :Hi,

I like the progress you have made on your fiesta.
One thing i thought you should know about the side repeaters you have got rid off, It is actually illegal to remove side repeaters. it Wont pass the MOT, plus police will have a few words with you if you get caught driving.

I wanted mine removed but was informed by the police when i made a inquiry.

From knuckles :)

its only illegal if u get caught :Q

Thats not the attitude towards road laws.
It may be all well and good until police pull you and throw book at you.
You will end up walking home with no car ......

Then who will be laughing ?

ME !!!!

well my brother is a mechanic at a garage where MOTs are taken, and he says that side repeaters arent actually nessesary to pass the mot if u can clearly see the indicaters at the front, ie if u had an escort with morettes then yes u would have to have them, or a car with the indicators in the mirrors if u changed the mirrors, but in case apparently not, and seeing as hes putting it through it doesnt bother me as he'll overlook it. the police dont know everything as they have pulled people on this site and said i was illegal to have a single wiper conversion when its not, most citroens have one wiper, and someone said on here that they knew for a fact that u had to have a rear wiper to pass the mot, when u dont at all. and dont worry about the handles, my insurance company will know EVERY single mod done to this car down to want brake pads im using, pretty much. theres going to be £2000 worth of wheels on it when finished with an agreed valuation, so its not going to be insured by direct line or anything.

Early Escort S1's don't have side repeaters.

There's actually a law about side repeaters. All cars after a certain datem ust have them. No idea about the date, but it's mid 80's i believe, as early Mk 2 Fiesta's didnt have them, neither did Mk 3 Escorts.

Mark 2 fiesta with repeaters AND mark 3 escort with repeaters.
If the car dont come with the repeaters then its legal.

Proved my point.
Repeaters by LAW ! :Q

Pez is right. The law was changed 84/85. If you don't have them, its illegal.

An early S1,

i have been told by a very trustworthy source that if you stand next to your rear lights, step out a metre to the side and you can see your front indicators you don't need side repeaters, if not you need them. but it also helps when your dads best mte does all your mots for you, hahahaha

wodwards, thats what my brother said to me, as long as u can see the front inicators from a certain angle standing at the rear side of the car then your ok, and on fiestas u can so if u have a decent MOT tester he can use his discression whether or not to pass it on that, which mine will cos hes already told me he'll over look it. if the police do pull me over and say u have 14 days to put them on etc etc, im having M3 mirrors on mine anyway so ill just buy some with the indicators on and fit them, no big deal. ive seen alot of cars, ie my grandads volvo s40 has rear side repeaters in the bump strips, i think its just so the manufacturer can earn safty points etc and cover their back. either way its not a major problem.

Look nice and smooth so far :Q

Just 3 small suggestions for the backend (as you know in the euro way of thinking, the small details count) whilst you're on a filling frenzy..

The Spoiler screw holes.
The small piece under the lights, where it meets the rear 1/4's, those join lines.
The numberplate light. Smooth that off, and get either some of those bolt lights that you can get for motorbikes, or if you can get a TVR style setup :Q There was a post in the styling section about them, but nothing seemed to get finalised :-?

Dark grey would be a good colour choice too :D

oh, and just to add to the previous comment... mk1&2 fiestas upto early D regs didn't have repeaters as standard. They were an optional extra however. That D reg posted either ticked that option box, or its a late one :)

thanks :D yeah, the light pannel things have been started, the spolier holes are being done and im looking into the number plate light, great minds eh? :D having to pick the lines carfully so as to leave the car with the fiesta shape, ie the spoilers not being smoothed in and its still going to have the black breakup bit but the holes will be smoothed. i saw the exact colour i had pictured in my head today on my way home on an old mercades, so its off to halfords tomorrow to see if i can get a few tins of it to do the interiour.

Scort :The law was changed 84/85. If you don't have them, its illegal.

Its nothing to do with manufacturers getting brownie points for safety by having side indicators, it is law! It only takes one copper to stop you on a bad day to get an on the spot fine. Its the same with rear seat belts. The law for those changed around the same time as the side indicator laws, and if you have rear seats, you must have fully working and secure belts.

no i didnt mean it as that, i meant they've started putting them on the rear of cars as well now to score more saftey points. i was just told that if u can see your front indicators from a certian angle (i dont know what) at the rear of the car then its ok. but even if its not i can get around the MOT. I know mr plod might notice (which is very slim if u think about it) but if he does its no odds to me to put em in the mirrors.

Ah that's just typical of Volvo, old mans cars and all that. Its a very Americanised thing, was popular in the UK in the 80's to have side marker lights (what the new Volvo's have) and thankfully disappeared.

Sounds cool :) I'm pretty much having a Euro vibe with my mk2, whenever i get it finished. I'm not going totally euro like yourself, but swinging more that way than standard :)

I was thinking along the lines of this for the plate light. Ideally i'd go for the TVR backlit ones, but not too sure how to pull it off properly :(

its all self taught, id never worked on a car before i started this, ive been told to look into it as a profession so hopefully starting a panel beating course in september so will be able to get the re spray done on the cheap as well :Q, as said ive got to be careful with the colour, cos if i get it wrong it could mean all the work is only half appreciated. and ill be seeing this one to the end, ive desided im not chucking a 1.1/1.3 back into it and driving it, its staying off the road untill theres a 220bhp zetec turbo sitting in it, so got years to build the engine and save for insurance yet , then look out for project MK1 Escort Cosworth

However as im working for my dad spraying lorry trailers I might have the car in primer and have it fully seam welded in a few weeks. and my target is to have it all sprayed by x mas.

Well not much progress really, just thought I'd let people know what im upto. The car is totally a shell now, just the bottom end to come out of the engine bay and its bare. Ive strted to prep the underside for hammeriting/stone chipping etc and cutting the arches for the wide wheels to go on. Had some shonky weather though, so its been a bit here and there. Ive done soem (bad) phtotshops of what the cars going to look like. If anyone can improve on them feel free.

One problem I have is i like the look of the smoothed tailgate but dont want to put the number plate on the bumper as with the twin zorsts and smoothing id will ruin the smooth look.

Heres the front
Image (its supposed to be a carbon bonnet

and the back
Image (god look at the wheels)

sorry its not a real update with work to the car, but shortly I'll have some ian style under body shots.
