more hot starting problems
in hot weather sometimes after a long drive my car wont start straight away. i have to leave it for 15-20 mins before it will start. the starter is heatwrapped and im using a standard 1.6 si exhaust manifold, so im not sure what the problem could be. is this a common fault on mk3's? or is it just mine, as ive had hot starting problems since ive had the car, they just get more common in the summer

See if you can start it when it doesnt go, by using a jump lead from the battery +ve to the starter where the small wire goes onto (the ignition cable) the starter. Let me know if that works!
Car needs to be on position 2 i.e. all electrics. Please make sure you are not in gear and you touch the right contact. There will be sparks and the engine should crank if it's what I think it is.

My car had exactly the same thing. I replaced the starter motor and heatwrapped the down pipe, checked earths and cables etc...
I can now start the car as i've described when roasting hot so I know it's to do with the ignition wiring which I am now getting sorted, (incorrect guage used with imob/alarm).
BTW I just checked and its the bottom most contact on the starter.

yeah ive replaced the starter for a high powered one, heatwrapped it, and used to have my old manifold heatwrapped too. yet still had the hot starting issues.
shows the heatwrap on the starter, with the old manifold.
looking at what you mentioned above, with the wrong gauge wire being used, i know mine used to have an immobiliser, what gauge/colour should the wire be?

I'm not sure. I'll be taking my alarm and imob out at the weekend ensuring it is properly despliced from the loom and all the connections are made good at the solder joints.
Then see if I have the same problem.
Will keep you updated.

as far as im aware the wiring for the starter is original, and i know the car has had at least one immobiliser, so the wiring may have been tampered with at some point, i got some wiring from another mk3 at the scrapyard the other day so im going to look into using some or all of it to replace mine.

right, this evening the car decided to not start again, so i tried the jump lead from the battery to the starter, as said there were some sparks when i turned the key, but the car started as normal. so i assume this points to the wire from the battery to the starter being faulty?
