Well, my leave is almost over :( I managed to use a few days of it productively though :D

Basically all the wiring is done! :aviator:

As you can see from the first pic, all the engine-bay loom is done and I've gone full-circle back to Coil-On-Plug (C.O.P)ignition :oooh: This might be of interest to some of you - I did some research and some testing of my own (using a signal generator, test-jig and oscilloscope) and found the the C.O.P coils can be ignited from the standard Ford DIS or EDIS wasted-spark setup :) Each individual coil had a dwell-time of just over 2ms, whereas the standard Ford coilpack has a dwell-time of 4.2ms. When wired in series, in pairs (1&4 , 2&3), the C.O.P coils had a dwell-time of just over 4ms! Others have successfully used this setup on various cars using EDIS and ECU-driven wasted-spark ignition. More importantly, I have freed upsome valuable space in my 'bay once again (chopped my hard-pipe for nothing though as I won't be using the standard coil-pack now :rolleyes: )

Image

The interior wiring is all done, the dash is all re-fitted and the instruments work! :Q

Almost looks like it was made to fit in an early '90's Fez :) Can't wait to get those other 3 needles moving though :devil:

Image

Image

Also fitted a FRS-Style "Engine Start" switch. As I'm using the FRS Relay-box and complete starting system, I thought it made sense.

Image

A new problem has been the Ford PATS system :rolleyes: As you know from my previous updates, I'm using the FRS EEC-5 104-Pin ECU which obviously uses that PATS system - I purchased the ECU & supposedly "matching" key from someone on Passionford - After some headscratching (and swearing!) today, I narrowed the problem down the the ECU & Key not matching. I'm getting 12v & Earth to the PATS, plus the two PATS signal wires have continuity to their corresponding pins on the ECU. With the ignition on, I've bypassed the two wires on the ECU that ground the "Engine Run" relay and starter relay, connecting them manually to earth - had the engine turning over on the starter motor that way (kept the coil leads off for now :oooh: )

Someone on this site who lives locally to me says that he can get the key reprogrammed for my ECU for far less that Ford charge so hopefully things will be happening soon... :wink:

I'm so excited that this little beast is finally coming to life after such a long slog

Thanks for all the kind words guys :) Yeah, exciting (but also worrying) times! :aaah:

Had a PM sent through and it looks like I may be getting the PATS system looking at and hopefully the key re-programming on Sat 24th - fingers crossed! :oooh:

Have still got a few little bits to do;

1. Both driveshafts are still sat in the boot, waiting for me to get it upon the ramps and fit them.

2. My PAS reservoir (nice little black item from a VOLVO of all things!) needs fitting and plumbing in.

3. One coolant pipe (to the top heater-matrix pipe - fiddly as fook to reach now! :rolleyes: ) needs fitting.

4. Brakes/Clutch need bleeding & clevis pin fitting to the master cylinder.

5. Engine oil, Trans Oil & Cooling system need filling.

6. Focus RS Post-Cat Lambda sensor needs boss welding further down the exhaust (just for ECU purposes - not planning on using a CAT).

7. Cooling fan wires still need connecting (will be using twin fans once it's running - think this lump may generate some heat! :aaah: )

8. Oh yeah the horn's knackered too (people should hear this motor coming though to be fair :P )

Things are getting hectic again at work now so hopefully I can keep my wife on-side and get some time on the car...

Hi mate, yeah I'm using the PATS ring from a 2001 (X reg) Focus petrol. I was under the impression that both the 104-pin (Focus RS/ST170 & Mondy MK3 1.8/2.0 Duratec) & 60-pin EEC-V ECU (the other Focus petrol models) use the same PATS ring. Unless I've missed something? :-?

Spent a couple of hours on the car this evening, as I received some new bits in the post this week :D

A Walbro ITP 048 Uprated Escort Cosworth fuel pump from Motorsport Developments.

A sytec fuel pressure gauge with a -6 AN T-Piece fitting.

Some reflective heat-proof tape and G2 Heat barrier material for the vulnerable pipes/wires in the bulkhead area.

2 x blank Focus "blue chip" keys (will be programmed to match my ECU by a Allinking when he and his brother are available)

Here's the new pump;

Image

Fitted;

Image

I also had to modify the fuel sender by swapping one wire from one end of the resistor-track to the other - doing this makes the fuel gauge on the Focus RS Clocks read correctly and not back-to-front - On my previous project "the Manj", I didn't bother doing this and just got used to "full" really meaning "empty"! :oops: Apparently you can also just swap to a MK5 Fiesta sender as Allinking did with his to run his Mondeo mk3 clocks.

Image

Thought I'd add this pic -you don't often see the fuel-filler panel on a MK3 Fez looking this good! :bonkers:

Image

Here's the Sytec fuel pressure guage, it's only fitted for when I get the car running and set-up - I have a 1/8 NPT blanking plug to take its place once all the tuning is complete.

Image

Here's my faithful service-barge "Kermit"- been lugging all my tools and spares around in him and enjoying all 50bhp! :bonkers:

Image

Once I've got the keys programmed, I can start sprinting for the finish-line on this project - I'm gagging to drive this car now :devil:

Looking good but you do know you should replace the diaphram thing between the pump with plain hose as they can colapse and cause fuel starvation or so i was told when i did my cossie pump :) and all being well I will try and sort a way to do the keys Sunday but still waiting :)

looking good mate.

if i was you, i would turn the filter bag round on the bottom of the pump, to have the long bit float side can cause problems, it did with my, when i got to 1/4 tank on the clocks i ran out :lol: i moved the filter bag round and all sorted :wink:

Damn it, I've definitely got to drop the tank now!! :lol: I'll keep my fingers crossed about Sunday - that would be fantastic, Mrs Esh is taking my two blank Focus keys to be cut to match my original Fiesta key today.

Ha yeah it's all coming together now :oooh:

Jayrs; At the moment my tank has about 5 litres in it, maybe less and the FRS clocks are showing empty with the fuel warning light on, so should be ok... I will fill it up at some point and check how it reads then - It looked ok when I tested it through its range outside the tank.

I will drop the tank again, fit the rubber fuel hose in place of the weird plastic diaphragm thingy, move the filter bag and perhaps fit a MK5 Fiesta fuel sender.

I've written a "job card" for the car now as there's so many niggly but essential little jobs that need tying down in order for the car to actually function properly - I always end up diving into it like a bull in a china shop, attacking a few jobs simultaneously and forgetting other ones! :rolleyes:

sounds like its coming together nice mate, your get them bits done in now time.

1 more thing, the surpressor on the sender unit (black box) i was told by power enginnering to bypass years ago as they can fail or cause problems, i never bypassed mine and touch wood and all that still dont get a problem.
thought i would say about it also cos if your dropping the tank again you might think, fcuk it, ill by pass to save any potental prob later

Allinking kindly dropped by today and programmed both my Focus "blue-chip" keys to match my Focus RS ECU, using the OBDII port.

When the ignition is on and the "Engine Start" button is pressed, the beast actually tries to start! :aviator: This proved that my OBDII port, PATS ring and starter relay are all wired up correctly.

I left the ignition coils disconnected today as I'm not quite ready to fire this thing up. Saying that, it only needs a couple more litres of oil, some coolant chucking in, the PAS resevoir connecting to the pump and I should be ready for the big moment :oooh:

Allinking, thanks again for your help today mate, much appreciated - I'll let you drive it once it's alive :)
