Project_XR2i_Trackcar :

Looking really good, I'm quite envious of the facilities and background you posess there mate.

Yeah sickening isn't it?!

Project_XR2i_Trackcar :Perks of the job eh   I need a UK posting with an LAD :)

LAD = "Light Aid Detatchment" i.e workshop that fixes military vehicles and kit. (Just in case any of you civvies were wondering? :P )

Project_XR2i_Trackcar :And to top it all, you are getting paid to do it LOL :D

Yeah sickening isn't it?! :bonkers:

rob pace :i am loving this project mate!!! just out of interest how much have you spent onthis so far? also what would you insure it as????? :-?

Ha, cheers mate :) Not spent a great deal TBH, Things like pistons, rods, ARP Bolts, Turbo, Intercooler, Pro Alloy rad, manifold, engine rebore, flywheel and clutch all came to a couple of grand I suppose but I had cash saved up from Afghan to cover that - plus the £ was really strong against the $ at the time so I got a lot of stuff much cheaper than it'd be now :Q

Other than that I get bits from the scrap yard, do all my own fabricating and work on the car (other than re-boring the engine and any ally welding as I've not had chance to get enough practice at that yet).

So that's about it really, I've said enough times that this car isn't a "credit card car" it's built through honest hard work and while it may not be as "(insert ghey rap term)" as some stuff you see in mags, I've not skinted myself building it :aviator:

I reckon paying someone else to do all this would cost a hell of a lot though! :aaah:

I'm hoping to get an agreed valuation on it when it's built (dunno who should do it - XROC or RSOC, at the end of the day it's a"fake" FRST so the RSOC might not entertain the idea, ah well  ) and insure it for what it's worth as I've put too much work into this for some state-sponsored chive to help himself to it and I get the Glass's Guide price for a 1992 XR2i 1.6 (about £50! ). I'm also going to get the CC rating changed on the logbook and keep it all above board.

bridgend_boy :amazing progress and your ability to do something thats never been done before is excellent
me being a fussy bugger aswell i cant see any cut corners, the finish of the job is great,

you must be soo chuffed!! :D

Cheers mate  I can assure you that it's not exactly perfect or show-standard but yeah, good enough for me. All I wanted from this was a very clean Silver K-Plate FRST replica with monstrous running gear! It's always going to be a "comfy" car rather than a stripped-out track toy, although I will be using it in anger on the odd track day & RWYB :)

Cheers again for all the kind words fellas :) , yeah those ramps are a bit overkill for a 900-odd KG Fiesta

They're also very steep so we have to put extra run-up ramps leading onto them so we don't bottom our cars out on them getting on! :oooh: We do have a smaller, more car-friendly ramps in a different part of the workshop but there's no crane there so they're useless if doing engine changes etc

allinking :Good to see this coming together look forward to seeing around town when its done :)

You're always welcome to come and have a look mate, just let me know and I'll get the gate-gestapo to let you on camp!

Turbo oil feed and oil drain pipes turned up today :)

Image

I managed to strip down, refurb and paint the rear brakes yesterday, also made some 20mm handbrake cable spacers and 8mm hub spacers. When I manage to get another "leave pass" off Mrs Esh, I'll be getting her on the ramps and tying up some loose ends :)

Lol, I never "proof-read" that did I!? :oooh:  By "her" I meant the car! My Mrs wouldn't want to be anywhere near the workshop while I'm working, I try not to mention the car too much around her too as I know she probably wishes I'd never started the bloody thing!

Ha! I'm hearing your cry mate  :P All I can do at the moment is more pics of what I've already done!

I'm well and truly back off leave and back to the harsh reality of work in the Army  We have our corps 10km cross-country race coming up which I'm in charge of training the team for and racing in myself, so in addition to my normal work I'm running myself ragged, then getting home after work knackered then the Mrs goes to the gym after work, leaving me with mini-Esh, so I'm climbing the walls trying to work out when I can get on with the car! :aaah:

I'll find time soon to get more done - I'm itching to hear this thing burbling away for the first time and drive it of course!

Cheers for the kind words :) The good part about being back at work and having the car stored on the shop floor is that lots of the guys have been asking me to take the cover off and show them the progress. It makes all the graft worthwhile when people come and admire what you've done, my lot are a fussy bunch too and quite outspoken so I must have done something right! :D

Hopefully I'll get some more time on it soon but I have a really hectic couple of weeks in front of me

Cheers James, much appreciated mate :) Yeah I really want this to be done ASAP but am trying to to rush it when I do get time in the workshop.

I fitted all the turbo oil lines the other day, they fit a treat luckily! :D Will be doing a few bits on Friday as Mrs Esh has kindly given me a leave-pass! :)

Gone mental and bought myself an A-reg (25yr old! :aaah: ) MK3 Escort 1.6i Cabriolet on the dreaded ebay today :oooh: - been dry-stored 10 years and has 7 months t&t as well! :Q That's gonna be my little runabout until the Fez is finally done (I really needed another roadworthy car as the Mrs takes the Focus to work every day and cycling isn't practical all the time). Paid a pittance for it and am collecting it in a week or so - may sell it on once the Fez is done...

Scott69 :Looking brilliant mate good job :Q

This picture is the problem im having now with my poxy cvh
With a T3 fitted the downpipe off the t3 just touches the front pannel when it tilts back. I may have to get the grinder out on it too ...
Was it much effort to do that ?

I cant believe you've pulled it off again jimmy. This car will shift like s**t off a shovel. 10/10 for workmanship
can i drop by when your bored with a 2.3 lump and a mk3 fiesta ? :D

AdamB :what drive shafts are you using? i had no end of trouble fitting the 2.0 into my mk4

I've done this before with my previous project "the Manj" which had the ST170 engine & 'box fitted - The powertrain was dummy-fitted with the standard focus 2.0 Zetec N/S driveshaft fitted on the O/S of the fiesta (N/S focus driveshaft is shorter than the O/S one). After careful measuring, the correct length was identified for the Fiesta N/S shaft and a makeshift metal bar was knocked up of that length to allow for dummy fitting purposes.

When funds allow I'm ordering a custom N/S driveshaft made from billet steel so problem solved!

As before, I'm using MK3.5 Fiesta Hubs which are the exact same spline pattern as the Focus ones.

There you go- it's not that big a deal :)

Hi everyone, just a quick post to say that the project is still very much moving along and I'll have some pics posted up here soon of some new updates :)

As I showed a few weeks ago, the Caterham Cosworth inlet plenum was just WAAAY too big to have even the smallest hope of fitting in what's left of my engine bay  . As a result I sold it on ebay for near enough what I paid then set about designing and fabricating a custom compact aluminum plenum that's more suitable for my needs.

There's only about 7.5" room between the face of the head and the rad/slam panel, so I'm aiming to keep the depth of the plenum to 6.5" to allow room for movement etc, also as it's located right at the front of the 'bay it can't protrude too high as the bonnet won't shut! :oooh:

I'm using 4" X 4" section 400mm long aluminium extruded tube for the main plenum body (I cut this to size today) and have already made a throttle body mounting plate for the end, complete with time-sert steel m6 threads. This is housing the standard 2.3 Duratec 65mm throttle body. I've also ordered a twin DCOE/Throttle bodies Duratec inlet manifold from ebay which is going to be TIG welded to my plenum as soon as it arrives! :D

Still got mock-up where the throttle cable bracket will be welded on and where I'm putting the vacuum take-offs etc but hopefully it'll come together.

Also have some front brakes now in the form of Esc Cos calipers & discs which should work well behind my 15's :)

Bye for now, next time I'll have pics - I promise! :bonkers:

Sarah (my wife) has given me a leave pass to spanner on the car a week this Friday (20th) :D , this weekend's obviously a no-go due to Valentines commitments! :aaah:

I'll be doing my best to have the plenum done by then so I can fit that and plenty of other odds & sods that need squaring away. I'm going to be spending a good 12hrs+ working on the car that aft/night so hopefully there'll be some progress! :Q

Ha cheers for the "advice" chaps but I intend on staying married for a few years thanks! :oooh:

Here's what landed on the doorstep today, I've been waiting for that manifold so that I can get the inlet fabricated - mega happy that it's turned up :)

Image

The discs and pads are just standard Escort Cosworth 280mm items to go with the Esc Cos calipers that arrived the other day. I'm not into fancy drilled/grooved stuff as my car is a primarily road-going civilised beast!
