mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
Hello
My steering lock is on and i cant turn the key in the barrel to release the lock, it wont even turn to pos 1.
Its been playing up for a while but ususaly when you wiggle the steering wheels and the key the lock releases
not anymore!
Does anyone know if i can remove the barrel and start the car with pliers or something? obviously feel free to pm me rather than posting on here how to do this.
Also the car has an airbag
Its a 1.1LX

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
i just thought
if i change the barrel i will get a new key
and unless i spend a fortune then the new key wont have a chip to take off the imobilser
so what should i do? someone mentioned taping the chip to the black plastic ring that surrounds the barrel and that this will turn the imob off?
or would it work if i just held the chiped key near the barrel as i turn the new key?

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
if you have a separate immobilizer/alarm system then you can remove the black ring from around the barrel and tape the key inside it to permanently disable the standard ford immobilizer, then you could replace the rest as you wish, you could fit a new barrel or as my brother has done re wire it to remove the barrel altogether and replace it with switches, but i would not recommend that unless you have a good alarm/immobilizer.

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
the problem is prob that the key has worn out to the point it wont work, and you need the lock turned into a postion to be able to get it out, so you need to get it working.
as for the chip, dont worry about that, the little red bit on the kay, prise that out and inside your find a glass transponder about 20mm long, thats all you need, so you can get another look that takes another key, and you simply put your transponder in that key and it will all work juist fine.
you can get a new key cut and try it in the lock, it could be that the lock has worn out as well meaning you will still have problems, but if all your door locks work off the same key, then i would say, get a new key cut, get a new ignition lock kit and build it up to suit the key, and then swap it over, but again you need to get the old one out, and the newly cut key may even work the new lock just fine meaning its easy.
see my guide for coding your keys and building locks here
guide-coding-your-keys-and-rebuilding-your-locks-vt169403/
this is a ignition repair kit (rebuild kit) and there a good price, i got one my self for my RS
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Ford-Sierra-T ... 45f0b697d8
or get one of these kits and put your transponder in the key, but you will then have a different key for ignition (i would double check will seller that the new key does take a transponder before buying)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ford-steering-IGN ... 5ad174f194
if you cant code your key, PM me a close up picture and i will code it for you mate

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
Take the ignition wiring block off the back of the barrel, it puts pressure on the centre of the barrel and its easier to to get the key to work with it off.

You could always go to a scrappy and start taking things apart.
The airbag is nothing to be worried about, I have two airbags in my shed.

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
i called a place just now, hes a trader on ebay.
I was going to buy a barrel and return it if the escort one didnt work but hes told me that it will work so not to bother.
Does anyone know how to disable the airbag whilst the car is being worked on?
Or do you not think i need to bother? getting the steering lock off will be fun!
It wasnt much fun getting the fecker onto a flat bed to be trailored home!

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
Disconnect the yellow wire around tge steering column, disconnect the battery, wait around 10 minutes and you'll hear a nice hiss from the airbag. Once that's done you can take it apart. Take the airbag off, be careful still with it though, take the wheel off. Now you can take tge steering lock and barrel off. Replace with another one and use the pats ring from the donor car.
Getting everything from a scrappy should be easy and most of tge time you'll find a full lock set. Any more questions feel free to ask. I did a full lock and pats module swap over recently.

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
air bag is held on with 2 bolts via the back of the steering whell, butjust wanna point out bere, you cant just pull the steering wheel off without operating the lock.
its a long winded way your going about this for a simple problem, as i said before, get a new key cut and your prob find the ignition lock works, if it dont, so you have a spare key for the doors and nothing lost

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
i have 3 keys dude.
The master plus 2.
I have tried all the keys, they work on the doors but no longer work on the barrel.
So it must be the barrel?

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
ah you never said you had more than 1 key.
yeah the bartrle is prob worn out, have you tried a bit of wd40 in it to see if it will free it a little to maybe make one of these keys work? i know its a long shot as when these types of locks stop working they can be a nightmare!
my drivers lock stopped working on me after playing up for some time, 10 mins of messing around and it opened, and i went down ford there and then and got a new lock

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
i know this sounds really dodgey but my brother removed his with a conveniently sized screwdriver, he found one that fitted inside the lock and would turn them to unlock it, it obviously didn't start the car but you could always try putting some flat screwdrivers in there and jiggle them around to see if you cant get it to shift, but its because of that screwdriver he removed all the locks
including the ignition barrel and fitted it with an immobilizer instead and a switch panel

you can get lock repair kits cheap, depends if you wanna keep the same key for all locks rather then have a different one.

Re: mk3 ignition barrel imobiliser question
The small screwdriver method mentioned above might work, not exactly a yale lock is it?
Jab that in, then use another small screwdriver to push a button thingy down then pull out, with difficulty if you have fun like I did.

To get the barrel out you turn the key to position I (I think it's I) and then press down on a circular tab along the top side of the barrel, it's a catch to hold it in.
