MFI to EFI running issues.. long story

Postby blackbeautyzetec on Sun Nov 09, 2014 12:57 pm

So after all the rpoblems on the MFI i went to EFI... and had more problems.

I got the engine in on OFAB and got the interior loom (ignition/fuel and so on)

The engine would not idle unless the TPS was unplugged and would rev about 2k on idle but would rev up ok.

I dropped the car down to Grove garage for them to have a look at (been told they take ages)....the car was there nearly 3 months.. i called up a few times and got told that the map sensor wasnt working and it now idles with TPS plugged in after putting a different map sensor on but not running great but all sensors are getting a signal.

After getting annoyed waiting around i called up again and was told that the engine has piston slap and the rings are gone so to go and get a new engine before they look at the rest.

So 3 months later im basically back at square 1in need of a new engine.

I dont want to buy and engine and still not get it running after sending it off for months again so what to get it running and then il change the engine.

problem i currently have is:

it will idle from cold but doesnt like to idle when hot (been told i need to set base idle when hot)
If i try to rev it, it just splutters and goes to die.
If you try to drive it you have to be carefull with the revs or it cuts out under too much.
If you rev it the revs stay up for a second before coming down.

unsure what to do from this point

Sorry to hear you are facing so many problems... It is a real pain when you try to fix something and one problem arrises after the other... hope you can find a solution...
Now... further the piston slap, the rings is a problem, since they can decrease CR and disturb the mixture if they are too much worn. Does it drink oil too or it just has a drop in CR? Regarding the idle issue, what you describe, is symptoms that come from erratic map sensor. Have you checked the wirring for faults? What is your AFR at idle? Have you measure the fuel pressure? There are a series of tests you can do to start ruling out things... Also... something i see often, at least here in Greece. Many people mod the engine looms from atmospheric models to OFAC or OFAB. Νο problem on that, but sometimes, if they don't take care on the correct wirring on the ECU socket pin change, or when they mix match the injector loom with the car loom plug, when you turn the switch, immediately you will damage the 5V section of the ECU. Ιt affects map sensor, TPS and CO pot circuit which are critical for fueling... I've seen it some times. You must open the ECU and have a look at the printed circuit near the ECU plug, on both sides for burned traces... I am not saying that this is your problem, but there is a chance there too... If you want to have a look and can measure with a DVM, use this schematic and measure the engine loom.

If everything is as it should, measure the fuel pressure under idle and when you try to rev it... I guess it is correctly timed. What do you use for ignition, the distributor ar have you converted to EDIS and coilpack?

Thanks for the info!

It's running an ofab loom. I understand what you mean about the 5v to the sensors as my old ecu was damaged on this basis as the loom was wired up wrong. This is a new ecu and loom.

Before it wouldn't start on and idle and grove put another map sensor on it and now it idles.

Would the oil in the chambers and blow back through the pistons cause this issue?

Well, oil in the chambers would cause excessive blue smoke... also if you lose compression it will take longer to rev if it is very low and it would also feel sluggish. You would also have a lot of blow by gasses from the crankase ventilation system...
