John Reid's guide to soldering

Postby Capri on Sat Feb 24, 2007 11:15 pm

[Cut & Pasted from the thread in Styling - Capri]

1) Strip the end of the wire you are using and get a length of heatshrink and put it over the wire you are going to join.

2) With your 2 peices of wire twist both ends together.

3) Wrap a peice of solder arround the joined wires.

4) After you have twisted the two wires together and wrapped solder arround them both you can start to solder.
Image
You have soldered the two wires together - it is now virtually unbreakable aslong as you have done a good job.

5) Now with your newly joined wires - slide the heatshrink which you put on one of the wires earlier over the join.

6) Now all you have to do is heat up the heatshrink to make it shrink (dont overheat it otherwise it will catch fire).

As I said in step 4 - it will be virtually unbreakable - below I will show you a bad solder join and a good solder join :

Bad Join :

Good Join :

hope this helps and is this anywhere near being a guide on how to solder and heatshrink ?
My name is Alex. I used to have a Capri. I don't anymore. But I'm still called Capri.

One thing I'll add; It's often a good idea to wait a short while for the join and surrounding wire to cool a little before moving the heat shrink over the join, or the heat coming from it can sometimes shrink it before it fully covers the join :)

the sildering iron there isnt the usual one its a weird one which is well....... crap but heats up quick.

Best one for soldering I think is :
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Tab ... 5&doy=22m3

The one used in the pictures is a solder gun I think.

And you can get the Heatshrink from Maplin :

Have a look on the maplin website http://www.maplin.co.uk, you can either find a centre near to you and go collect all you need or buy it all online.
I'd recommend going to a store, i'm like a kid in a candy shop when i go in, always come out with far more than i went in for.

Heatshrik comes in two or three different sizes for all thicknesses of wire and solder is available to. You'll have plenty of change from a tenner for both items.

top buy from maplins too is a wee gadget called a micro-jet , it is fueled by cheap refillable butane cigarette lighters, multi use , soldering , heat shrinking and heating siezed nuts etc, cheap too !
