Is the RS1800 really rare??

Postby Rodge on Sun Oct 23, 2005 9:36 pm

I mean there all over the place. I'm trying to sell mine and a kid who came to look at it today come in his mates RS1800.

I know two people that know a couple of people that have them, they pop up on ebay quite alot and there are quite a few people on here that have them.

Surely there was more than five hundred made :-?

That's wrong. The 500 odd figure banded about is uk made ones.

They made thousands of them.

A bit off topic but rodge, i notice your project is a 4wd ZT - wasn't it going to be rear wheel drive originally.

Ive read X amount of times that there was only about 498 or somthing like that registered in the uk. Ive read that on loads of sites and the Fast Ford mag downa fearure on a RS1800 and again it stated they only made under 500.

people saying theres 1000's is bollax, i personally dont think there are!

Anyway im buying one soon. So who cares

As Ade said they made far more than 500 but the 500 figure is for the UK market.

Think in the region of 5000 were made. (I'm only thinking here lads  )

I think what Ade means is the ones that were actually made in the UK, but many were probably made elsewhere, then imported over. I don't think the RS1800 exists in any other country (at least not with the RS1800 badge)...

I've also seen more RS1800s than RS Turbos in my time :)

Originally it was yes but i changed my mind

I was going to use a rear axle from a MK2 escort RS2000, but it was roughly 3 inch narrower than the fiesta rear beam. I want to use the original fiesta suspension set up but i wouldn't have been able to fit some wide wheels on the rear because they would have been brought closer to the suspension legs. Plus the rear axle from a sierra will fit a lot easier than i first thought.

They made 494 uk registered cars, but others were sold abroad. They also made a xr2i abroad with the 130 lump! For some reason it wasnt badges as an RS1800!

That's a myth. Around 500 UK built cars were registerd here, and something like 5000 Spanish built cars.

The UK RS1800 is in fact an Xr2i, that's all it was intended to be. We got a 105ps XR2i and the RS1800 due to the high cost of insurance over here.

But surely an RS badge would have been harder to insure??? So do you reckon all those 5000 cars are over here? I speak to people all over the world with RS1800's, some as far as Romania. Some are labelled RS1800 and others xr2i? Yet the same car. Whats the myth?

The myth is that there were only 500 RS1800's in the uk :)

Yes you are right, an RS badged car with 25ps more would be harder to insure, but the point is the XR2i (cut down 105 ps version) wouldn't be, and so Ford could still shift a large volume of the Fiesta sports series.

The same car is all over the world, but in the rest of Europe at least, it's called an XR2i.

That will be y u see so many for sale, so ur saying insuring the xr and rs was about the same. I guess it figures as they are in the same insurance group. I found my rs cheaper to insure than a xr2i! :)

FRST/RS1800 = Grp 15
XR2i 1.6/1.8 = Grp 14
2.0L Si (Faster than RS1800) = Group 9

exactly stoned, some mags really need to proof read. In fastford they have an xr2i buyers guide and it says about the insurance panic of the late 80's early 90's and hence it sits in group 15 insurance, then on the next page where they have the spec sheets it clearly staes both 2i's are in the group 14. i also found, even though the zetec 2i on paper is esentually slower and apparently less likley to get pinched, it was always 100-250 more expencive to insure

I dont think it's the power, it's just they were one of THE hot hatches of the time and take less than a minute to break into.

The insurance group on them is very unfair by modern standards.

I know some colours were wupposed to be rare. Mine was Mallard green not tourmallard or petrol blue like most of the others. Then I modded it and then sold all the parts and scrapped the shell doh! one less makes em even more rare then
BTW there are lots of rebadged 2is out there too so watch out for them.

There were 497 cars built in one of the countries and sold here, whether it was actual UK cars, or Cologne/Valencia cars I can't remember now...it's been a while!

Yeah totally true as insurance companies like HIC take the insurance group for the car the engine came from. In this case a 2L Mondeo which is grp 9.

Lots of people have insured their 2L Fiestas this way.

There were 497 made in Dagenham and another 4000 odd made abroad. Lots of the ones made abroad were imported here.

In most countries there is no 105 PS XR2i and no RS 1800 just an XR2i with 130ps. In other countries (like the UK) they made the XR2i 105ps because of high insurance costs, and also sold the 130ps as the RS 1800. I guess figuring people wouldn't mind spending more on insurance if it was an RS.

xfactor :BTW there are lots of rebadged 2is out there too so watch out for them.

Watch out for 1800s rebadged as 2is as well ;)
