Is it illegal to sell a car vin number and V5C??

Postby mintwhiters on Wed May 27, 2009 1:24 pm

OK, I'm not after any lectures about rights and wrongs I just want to know if it is actually illegal to re-sell a car vin number, plate and V5C when the rest of the car has been cut up and weighed in.

Its actually not illegal as such although the DVLA are within their rights to register as "scrapped" any V5's they see for sale without a vehicle. It only becomes illegal when you try to put the id onto another vehicle.

Yep the shell was f@@@ed there was rust in places there really shouldn't be to the stage that when I went to jack it up on the chassis rails the jack shot straight up through the floor!! :aaah: so will keep all the details until I can build a shell from floor parts up. Oh, and the rear quarter repair it had had in a previous life was about to fall off, sill repairs weren't good, all arches had gone, rear panel gone through, boot patched but rust had gone too far in it to save, doors had been bodged with filler so you couldn't fit a lock properly, inner front arches rotten, etc.... was looking really bad after I had taken the kit etc off and we couldn't remove the front suspension due to the bolts all being rusted so badly that even with power tools they were just rounding or snapping so just had to give in in the end, shame but it will cost the same to build a shell from scratch!

Don't people re-shell cars? I got told by an mot tester that's the best option when I wanted to put number plates from my old fiesta I scrapped on my current fez...
Weld the chassis number in place of mine, put no. plates on, change engine number on v5c, and cc, fuel etc, tax, mot and then inform insurance company of the changes?
I couldn't be bothered to do it anyway... But i'm sure you can legally do it?

You can re shell a car but the only way you can keep the cars origional ID is to buy a BRAND NEW UNSTAMPED UNREGISTERED shell from the likes of ford and is will have to have a VOSA (or whatever its called) vehicle check. You have to use a certain percentage of the cars origional parts also. You can't just buy a 1.1 Fiesta, put your RST enigne and number plates on and keep it as an RST
