hammerite paint for underside of car

Postby magic_john on Tue Jun 24, 2008 9:14 pm

hi all im thinking of painting the full underneath of my car in hammerite black to prevent the rust from getting worse
and just for protection really clean it up a bit.
but a few ppl say hammerite aint too good to use and some have said its quite good .
so i dont really know what to use.. is it worth buying the hammerite or would i be better off getting summin else.
ive searched google for car rust treatment underside and it just comes up with hammerite and nuffin much else really.
any reccommendations or particular brands to go for ?
many thanks john

it is good stuff BUT i wouldt use it for what you are wanting to use it for, as it isnt proper underseal its not as thick i would have thort it would chip off fairly easly.

That stuff is ok, but its not overpaintable and only comes in black. Best way to do it in my opinion is to get a drill with a wire brush attachment, take any rust off and etch primer the bare metal, then get a sprayable underbody sealer stone chip, I picked up 5 cans from my brothers work this morning for the escort for only £3 each. Spray the lot in stone chip then hammerite it to the cars colour. Will take a good couple of days to do it properly but its the only way to do it. If the cars a daily driver just do abit at a time. All the bits I've only painted in Hammerite will be re done as on its own it really isnt good enough.

Thanks for that mate, I should really do it properly for the XR. I was just looking for the easy option for the daily drive as it's not the nicest of jobs - especially without a ramp

You saved me some typing :D

You can get the black attachment from Halfords i noticed the last time i was in one. As Muz says take out all the rust and prime, then stone guard and paint, not only will it be solid, it will look a lot better too.

just been and bought a drill with the wire brush attactchment as i didnt have one lol
managed to get some primer and a couple of tins of hammerite
but i couldnt find that sprayable underbody sealer stone chip thing?
is they a certain name/brand for it or will any do?
when i went to get some hammerite earlier i stopped of at (BOYES) cause they had a sale on with paints lol
and there selling hammerite 500ml at £2.99 per tin..so 3 tins cost me only £9 lol so just thought id let you guys know because i think all of them are doing it .
the only thing is the sell by date on them was 2007 and i dont think that will effect the product..

3M stuff is the best stone chip, but I went for a cheap and cheerful spray can stuff that has actually turned out really good. Used it on the Escort today. Will get some pics up for you tomoz, but any old stone chip will do the job really. Its a c**t of a job, I really hate it, but its a job that must be done I'm afraid. 8 Hours today, a face and arms covered in paint and aint anywhere near finished yet :x  You will need at least 3 coats of Hammerite on your stone chip as well I'd say to give a good enough finish.

Also be ready to find any supprising bits of rot /rust/scabby patches you didnt know where there on your way.
