frst starting problem when hot

Postby RScrew69 on Tue Oct 19, 2004 5:38 pm

ok my freinds frst has a starting problem, it will start when stone cold no probs, but when it ges hot, u turn the key and nothing even when its gone stone cold aswell.
he's tried a recon starter motor as thats what we thought it to be, but it still does it, he wanted to know if there were any sensors or something that could be failing when the cars hot stopping it from starting up?

also when its not starting the only way to start it is by pushing it, it does exactly the same thing with the old starter and the new starter motor, got him and myself stumped, no ideas now unfortuantely.

anybody else know or have any ideas as to what could be failing on it?

If you can bump start it, it points to all the sensors working, it would be the actual starter circuit that is at fault. If the starter motor itself has been sorted out, it's the wiring to the solenoid or the solenoid itself. Check that the wiring isn't developing a dry joint due to engine heat (check that wiring doesn't run too close to any hot areas), make sure connectors are all intact and not corroded, and check to make sure there's a decent earth. Failing that it could be a sticky solenoid, there's another thread on here addressing just that problem, suggestion seems to be to put the car in gear and rock it backwards and forwards to free off the mechanism. :)

First of all i'd warm the car up so that the problem occurs. Then get a circuit tester and check that when you turn the key to start the car again, that current is coming from the ignition key. Sticking solenoid is a mechanical issue i think, might cause the starter to turn when the car is pushed along, but i'm not sure the best way to test that in situ...
