[GUIDE] Fitting Mk3.5 mirrors to a Mk3 Fiesta - With Pics...
Mk3.5 Mirrors - Stylish and a lot better than rubbish M3 mirrors
This is a guide to fit the later style fiesta mirrors to the mk3 fiesta. Get rid of your bus style mirrors which look so old and dated.
Don’t go for bmw look-alike mirrors, which are so tacky and cheap looking.
From 1995 onwards Ford began to fit mk3.5 mirrors along with changing more things on the mk3 fiesta to bring it up to date with technology and style.
These newer models were classed as Mk3.5 due to having different floor layouts, newer mirrors, Airbags were also introduced with side impact bars, updated electric window switches etc….
Parts required:
Pair of mk3.5 fiesta mirrors
Pair of mk3.5 fiesta inner mirror panels
Tools required:
Socket set
Screwdriver
Dremmel or angle grinder
Protective glasses
Dust mask
File
Touch up paint
Oooh - Nice looking 3.5 mirrors - - Try colour coding them after
First off start by removing the door handle surround, lower door pocket and door handle. Unclip the door panel itself by pulling the lower part, then lifting it off at the top. All fixings shown below. If you have a window winder you will have to unclip it from behind with a small flat head screwdriver, then the handle will come off.
Once all has been removed, pull off the adjuster handle, then unscrew the mirror inner panel with the screwdriver and remove it to reveal the mirror fixings.
The mirror is held on by three 10mm bolts. Undo these but hold onto the mirror itself on the outside to stop it falling on the floor.
With the mirror removed you are left with a hole that will require cutting before the mk3.5 mirror can be fitted.
The picture below shows the area that requires cutting before the mirror can be fitted. Basically the mk3.5 mirror has a bigger adjuster, which does not fit through the smaller mk3 door panel.
Highlighted in blue is the area that is needs to be cut. If the picture confuses you, try putting the new mirror on and you will see the problem.
Below is a picture of a mk3.5 door panel to give you an idea of the hole required to fit the mirrors.
Circles don’t fit through square holes – Basic nursery exercise
You have two options here…
1. Use a angle grinder to cut away the unwanted metal
2. Use a dremmel to do the same but takes a little longer.
The door panel has 2 layers of metal which needs to be cut away so it can’t be done with a hack saw or something silly like that.
Be careful when using power tools, especially when it involves sharp blades. Use protective eyewear and a dust mask.
After you have butchered your door use the file to smooth off any sharp metal which you may cut yourself on when fitting the new mirror.
Next you can trial fit your mirror by checking the adjuster slides through the hole you just created and that all 3 fixing holes line up with the holes in the door.
Remove the mirror, and then get some touch up paint and paint 1 or 2 coats of paint over any exposed metal which is showing. This will prevent any rainwater rusting your door panel in the near future.
When the paint is dry fit the Mk3.5 mirror and bolt back on with the 3 bolts you removed from the old mirror. Then you need to fit the mirror inner panel, which comes with the mk3.5 mirror. The inner panel simply screws back in the same as the old one.
Refit the door panel by hooking the top over the clips then gently pushing along the edge to pop the fixings back in the door. Next refit the door pocket, door handle surround and the door handle.
There you have it … Mk3.5 mirrors fitted to the Mk3.
I hope this guide helps in some way, shape or form.
