It's been a fair while since I've updated this with anything as I've not done anything lol

Anyhow, after 7 months of the car being in my drive covered up due to the roof in the garage I rent getting ripped off at Christmas, they finally fixed it!
Don't think it's going anywhere again in a hurry....

Image

I unwrapped the car last week and started to do a few bits, the main thing was complete something i started years ago!
Rear head rests lol I also put the stainless exhaust back on after it's MOT, nothing major I know but it's something.
Although I'm starting to think the stainless is a tad to loud after having the std system on for so long... Must be getting old :bonkers:

Also got a puma linkage to go in once I mod it, was hoping to have that done before fordfair but it ain't gunna happen as I just don't have time, so I will use what little time I have before fordfair to do some
Minor bits and more importantly, drive it to get some
MIles on it before fordfair, don't sound much but she hasn't been driven properly for nearly 2 years now.

Few pics

Yes, the seats have been cleaned since the pics, these were spare rear seats not the ones from my car, so I can swap back if I want to

I like the twin reverse lights (though with a red bulb one would make a decent fog), and I much prefer the ambers in the front bumper :)

Them rear lights been on for years now nick, and I do have a red bulb in there

I'm still 50/50 on the ambers, might just fit them both for a while and see if they grow any more on me :)

For the lower extensions on the rear bumper have you just used a rs front splitter. Looks really good and would proper tie in with the front if you still had a rs front bumper

Well I've been saying it for years, but I can now confirm I have some wilwoods :D

Well almost :bonkers: have ordered a pair of Wilwood midilite calipers, they should be delivered this Wednesday, along with a set of mintex mbd2581 m1144 pads, and line adapters.

I will also be ordering two blocks of alloy (6068 grade) to make up the mounting brackets, a new set of discs, and I have to also have some new front lines made up.
The plan is to mock it all up on a spare hub to get the bracket design, then once ive machined that up, there be going on... At last

I know mate lol

I don't have std though fella, got the escort cosworth set up on there.

When I ordered the wilwoods, I went for the 1.5 inch piston size, as that closes matches the orignal calipers via the equation you use to work out, this way it will give me the good braking with little to no extra pedal travel, so all in all I don't think it will have greater braking power over what I got, but I think ther braking performance will be improved.

I will let ya know though dude.

As you know Shaun I've had the escort cos set up for donkies years and can't fault them, and as said I don't assume much difference will be noticed, looks is one thing, I've always wanted them is the other.

The cossie set up was always destined to be used for the xr2 when it's done, if I'm going to have to buy a complete set up again for that, I just as well get what I want for the FRST and pass the current set up down to the xr lol

And no, black calipers mate

I got a set on mine jay they are well worth it mate. Dust caps you can buy off ebay lol just take your time doing up the small bleed nipple as they like to snap and finding them is hard enough work on they're own. Think I payed £25 for a set of 8 nipples and £12 for the dust caps proper wilwood ones I might add couldnt get any from any motor factors or bike shops. I had to get them sent from america at great cost. Think the postage was the same as the parts. Do the calipers come with pads because wilwood ones aren't cheap either. I guess you're still using cosworth 280mm discs the same as what I am using. I have never had cosworth brakes so cant comment on the difference but they are a good set up mate

Cheers dude.
Yeah i pick up some dust caps, guy I work with knows someone who is a Wilwood dealer (in Italy lol) so I'll see if he can get some proper ones, but for now I'll find something :)
And as for the nipple it self, yeah I see how small they are, I won't be busting one of them in a hurry :bonkers:

Pad wise I got pairs when I orderd the calipers, decided to go for the Mintex MDB2581 M1144 compound, as I don't do tack days etc I di t need anything else, want a decent pad which works well, and I'm sure the pads I have in my cossie calioers are the same compound, so can't fault them, plus I rate mintex pads highly anyway.

And yes mate, using the 280mm cosworth discs.

One down side is I can't find anywhere that sells the brackets ready made, Prob did in the day but can't find anywhere now so have to make my own

Lol yeah still got it mate.

Got her out on Monday and within half hour someone asked me if I wanted to sell it lol

Brakes are nice, but at mo being a bit of a pain :( haven't fitted them yet but have someone lined up to make some brackets out of stainless :Q just need to work out where the caliper mounting holes need to be in the brackets, and this is where the pain in the arse starts! It seems using escort cosworth disc will be fine with my current wheels, or at least measurement wise looks fine, where as I wanna change them for mondo wheels, and it ain't gunna happen, I done a bench mock up with a mondeo rim tonight and the caliper is massively fouling the rim.
If I was to use these disc I'm fun a need a wheel spacer of between 10 and 15mm, so gotta sorce different discs if I want to go with the mondeo rim

Fun and games mate lol, I do miss the little problems with messing with cars :D

Hi mate,

Car looks awesome, really like the mods that you have done, they look almost factory.

I noticed in an older thread you said about modding and fitting a puma gear linkage?

Have you done that yet? What is required?

I have an 8v XR2i and the gear shifter feels very "sloppy" with lots of side to side twisting movement. I took the gear linkage out and noticed the gear linkage plate with the large rubber bush, almost a socket for the ball, was corroded.

I bought a second hand replacement but it seems the same. Is this just the feel of it or is it indeed worn?

I am new to fiestas, I recently restored a 2.8 injection capri and never had this problem.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris, and cheers :D

As for puma linkage, no it's not fitted, I didn't get the time last year, it's more than just bolting it on, both rods need cutting down, but the main problem is there is no sprig return built into it to make t sit central in neutral, this is all done internal to the gearbox on the IB5 box, the BC box that the rs has, and all mk3 fiestas if that time, so fitting something to make it have this spring return is the main challenge.
You can sort of do it with a spring hooked into the shift rod and hooked on the chassis like the very early mk2 fiestas, but I don't like that, and refuse to do it like that, and I have tried a few things so far to build a spring return into the linkage, as yet, not sure fire winner lol, couple of potentials there, but long term and spring wear make me shy away from that, basically it works on the bench, but on the car getting weathered, and general use, I don't think it will last more than a few years before the spring breaks.
So I'll keep working on that for a more permeate solution.

As for your one, the main things that wear are the doings and the blocks inside the plastic box that houses the gear stick, you can buy these replacment parts from for for less than £15 and there dead easy to fit.
The UJ that connects to the gearbox always wears too, some far more than others, there are, or were anyway, some home made kits that people done to rebuild this UJ, Ibe seen a few different sorts over the years and they all pretty much will work fine tbh, although I prefer the plan bearing one over the roller bearing one, mainly becusse I don't think the small roller bearings are man enough for prolonged use the way they will be used on the linkage, and also the plan bearing sort is the same as what I had in mind when I was thinking of making a repair kit, but like
A lot of things never got round too LOl

Thanks for the quick reply and all the information, very useful.

I think is I'll strip down the replacement linkage I bought to see if those parts are worn and look at replacing them.

I will look into the puma linkage to see if there is anything I can think of. My dad is a toolmaker/engineer who worked in the engine plant of fords for over 40 years. His knowledge and experience is very useful so he may be able to come up with a solution.

I guess the puma linkage is fairly cheap and readily available?

Thanks
