F.A.O. All Internet Guru's - Help

Postby 007 on Wed Jul 31, 2002 11:19 am

I am currently half way through doing a HNC computing course (open learning). It is boring me to tears and the fact the unit packs are badly written with test questions not covered so you have to guess some doesn’t help. It is easy but I would have to go to college to do the HND

So I am planning doing a Macromedia course, including Dreamweaver/ Flash etc but have been offered a CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster) course for the same price. Has anyone heard of this? I haven’t. Any opinions gratefully received!
:)

I've never heard of it! Sounds a bit 'made up' to me! ;)

I would make a descision now whether you want to do front end design or the back end coding.

I've done a mixture of both and therefore not got as much experience as I could have by concentrating on one.

At the moment I do both, but it's a very small company with just me doing anything vaguely intenet related. Larger places will have dedicated coders and dedicated designers.

Its seems to be an attempt at some kind of industry standard but i've been through the jobs and list CIW and got nowt :( So I am heading the Macromedia route - anything to get me out of Hardware and Power Tools. I like front and rear end stuff :o but its easier to get the front end courses for distance learning :) Cheers Ade :)

But Ade, don't you find it more satidsfying somehow when you see your work coming together when you work the way you do ?

I know I prefer to be able to see a *real* result at the end of the day, I dont wanna put anyone off specialising but being a jack of all trades gives you insights that most specialists dont have.

It's probably helped as much as hindered.

I like doing the whole site (as with ft etc), being able to say "I did everything there", and it's great for small companies where you can do a bit of everything.

The trouble is small companies are limited in terms of career potential, and most large co's are more specific in job roles.

I reckon if you're an arty person then the design side would suit you, and if you're more mathematically thinking, then the coding side.

I got an E in maths and a G in art...

Its good for your CV working for a small company. I work for a Large company but in a small branch. In the 10 years since I left school i've worked at the same place as:

Storeman (1 yr YTS)
Sales Assistant
Van Driver (when the proper van driver was on hols)
Estimator
Ironmongery Buyer
Power Tools Buyer
Architectual Ironmonger
Key Account Manager
Marketing Manager
Warehouse Manager

Id like to learn the web stuff in total but it seems easier to start from the front :) I could of course take both courses at the same time + my HNC :-? That could lead to a mental breakdown of course :bonkers:
