Emergency help Please Exhaust gas in cabin

Postby Mav Singh on Tue Nov 03, 2015 11:51 am

hey all, mk3 1.6 si here, im getting what i think is exhaust gas fumes in the car when the heating is turned on, my eyes get watery and i get dizzy.

any idea where this would come from, no exhaust leaks from what i can see under the car but not sure whereabouts in the enginebay to look.
manifold seems to be ok

i dont think the smell comes in if its set to cold, i will check later today,

where does hot and cold air come from into the cabin? is hot air directed in from the engine bay?
i thought it was sealed off from the engine, but not sure.

just to add iv changed the rocker cover gasket few days ago, old one was leaking, so i cleaned up the area afterwards brake cleaner. would old oil deposits that have dropped down onto the exhaust cause this sort of issue?
all i know is if i put the heating on i get watery eyes and they sting a bit.

You sure its exhaust gas? Could it not be melting plastic? If its heater related (only when heat is selected)it could be a problem with a connector or the actual heater element, does it getter better or worse with time?
