xrt-mart :Ian Howell sells a idler pulley to sort out the water pump/alternator problem. Give him a bell :wink:


As above you can mount the s3 engine with a modified FRST mount and use a FRST alternator. All problems sorted, just need to buy the one thing. Easy and I would of thought reasonably cheap.

Right a quick update but first of all i must say again a BIG THANK YOU TO Mark (Aka Excursion) for the engine mount off his super project, after a cheaky email he basically gave me the mounting that he had used on his car to mount a black top engine into it.

So that is a great help and a big push for me in the right direction!

Also a couple more bits have been amassed and arrived!

Mainly the ARP headstids and also i have just ordered these!!!!

JE pistons and rings!

So as soon as they arrive the bottom end can be taken aware to have the machine work done and then assembled! Cant wait! :D

The initail budget of £1000 looks to be a little on the tight side, as i only have £220 left out of that however the main bits have all been brought and just need to sort out gaskets mainly and pay for machine work and then any other fancy bts i decide i would like as and when they turn up!
Im looking at a budget now of around £2000 inc management which will more than likely be a Gotech unit as i was compairing these against the likes of Omex and are dirt cheap in comparison and offer alot of the same features.

yeah realised after i ordered them that its 9:1 which is a little higher than i would have liked but will be good for low down grunt.

Slipper pistons, not 100% sure but i was reccomended these by a couple of people including the bloke that has got the 2ltr ZVH runnnig over 300bhp with all the zoo motorsport bits on and NOS so they must be able to cope aslong as the setting up is ok.

Max - Yeah its a budget build but not if you get me, its having all of the right bits put in first as last so that it is a strong engine but they are not costing me the RRP on them as i am being careful with my money and getting the best deals i can on each thing which includes ebay and getting some things from the US to keep costs down.

I have however not included the cost of the fidanza alloy flywheel or the helix 6 paddle clutch in the 2k as they were going to go on the CVH with the mtx75 box fitted so were already sat in the shed.

Biggest single outlay im going to have to spend now after the pistons is the management i would imagin, as i will be fitting it all myself and doing the loom myself so again that will save alot in labour which is partly the reason the budget is only 2k.

Ive done it twice and still this time around on mine i have gone way over the budget.. Its the small bits that add up unortunalty.

Yeah any extras i want like the tubular manifold will push the cost way above the 2k but im hoping i can get the engine built and the management for the 2k mark as that will then leave me with a nice amount left over for extra's!

Yeah cant wait to get it all built up and put in the car, still got the driveshafts and gearbox mount to ort out as well at some point so that will be extra again :( god cars are money pits! :lol:

Scary thing is i could have had a very very nice escort cosworth monte (my dream ford) for what i have spent on the fiesta in the last couple of years! :cry:

Yeah there is that, but its still not an escos tho is it....

Standard escos look stunning but a completely standard monte (well with carbon splitter and hockey sticks and RS500 light grills) in the jewel violet is just something else! The colour really suits them somehow.

That is my dream car aswell, was one just like that at ford fair 06, think it had black or anthracite mo's on it.

Right little update again

The JE pistons finally arrived today from the US, with what cn only be described as the world most obvious fraudulant invoice and customs decleration know to man! They were valued as a $50 comercial sample, and the invoice shows me as balance after payment of -$542.00 due. So that means according to my invoice he owes me $542 :o :oooh:

Any way without futher ado i will get to the good bit, the pics :D

The quality of them is brilliant, cant fault them at al.

The block is hopefully going off for machining tomorrow and will also be ordering 99% of all the remaining bits needed from ford to build the bottom end up in the morning as well.

Also these arrived a while ago cant remember if i said i had them or not so here is another pic....

ARP head and main stud kits, got the cam bolts and also flywheel bolts on order from demon tweeks andthe eagle rods already came with ARP bolts as well...

Going to be a strong engine hopefully!

Yeah they look too good to be stuck inside the engine, but if they do their job then just gotta be! :lol:

The machine work to over bore the block will be in the region of £60 plus the dreaded, not too bad i didnt think. Should have the block back sat or mon.... looks like it will be mon! :(

Went to ford this morning armed with a LONG list of parts i needed to buy to build the engine up, there are few things i still need to buy / sort out to be able to fully build the engine up. The head spec is my next priority..... Have found some nice valves from america, gotta make sure they are fine for turbo applications before i buy them. Then its just the head work and the cams to sort and it will all be built.

Then management...... :(

am using a std zetec black top head, bargain at £25.... :D

Power am looking for 300, but am trying to over engineer the engine so that if i want more i can save buying bits now and then ripping it apart 12 months down the line.

im not sure in all honesty, i think the black tops use a positive clearance at top dead centre, meaning the pistons stick out the bores when at the top.

Chances are if this is the case then you would have piston hitting the valves recking the engine very quickly, someone else may be able to give a definate answer tho

Im keeping a spreadsheet of the cost of the zetec build, firstly for my own interest to see how much you can build a zetec turbo for with a bit of cunning and luck and also so i have some record of where all my bloody moneys suddenly gone to!

I have spent somewhere in the region of 15k on the fiesta including the £500 i paid in sept 2000 to buy the car as a 1.1 popular. Since then its had 4 engines, 2 resprays, 4 sets of wheels, 3 different body kits and 3 interiors not including the other things that i have changed a couple of times! think ive spent quite a bit to much on the bloody thing :'(

the comp ratio is going to be 9:1 which is a little high for my liking but that can always be sorted if needs be with a thicker head gasket from cometic, will be good off boost tho :lol:

The turbo is going to be a t3 for now, its the stage 2 that was on the cvh. Although its not idea its not as bad as some of the numptys of passion ford made out it to be...

May have to find managment that incoperates knock sensors just to be on the safe side with the cr being that high.

excellent so far, you have similar pistons to what i am running in my zvh but i ve gone for a 7.9:1 c/r

should be good strong engine :D

the t3 you're thinking of using : is it the one from the ERST? i've read that the one from a saff cossie would be better?
i'm only going on what i've read, and i'm going to be doing the same style build soon^^

im going to be using a stage 2 t3, the saff cossie either had a t34 or a larger exhaust housing meaning it can flow more and give bigger power.

Now for a bit of a quick update, picked up all bar 1 of the bits i ordered from ford yesterday. The total came to £163.59 inc my bit of discount.

For that i got the following:

They are in no perticular order....

Thermostat + seal
Timing belt back plate
Dip stick tube + Dip stick + Extra O Ring
Water pump gasket
4 * focus RS spark plugs
Cylinder head gasket
Sump gasket
Tube of sealant
Tensioner bolt (had to buy 5)
Crank seal + outer gasket
Oil pump gasket

And will be picking up a crank pulley bolt tomorrow.

Also yesterday afternoon these arrived off Ebay america for the small sum of £14 DELIVERED!!! :o Thats cheaper than what anyone from ebay in the uk wold have charged and alot quicker delivery than most uk sellers as well. Very impressed with the seller, Autodan0_4, and would defo reccomend them if anyone needed anything focu related as they seem to break alot of focus'

They are zetec black top upper and lower cam belt covers.

Been like a child at christmas today, nothing nicer than having loads of new bits in ford wrapers waiting to be fitted. Hopefully will get the block back sat morn if not it will be monday and then will start to build it all up. Should have the botom end done by Wed i would have thought.

Looking good mate, hope it goes well.

As for the CR issue, a knock sensor on the management is a good idea, and as long as its properly mapped by someone who knows what tehy are doing, it shouldnt be a big issue. VW's TSi engine is 10:1 and they say up to 2bar of boost... they must know how to map :) The days of low CR and high boost should be short lived as long as mappers know how to make it safe, its just a little more work.

yeah higher compression is the way forward and has been for a few year on higher powered turbo engines. It improves the off bost drivability of the engines greatly and in turn the fuel economy is increased off boost by this. This has mainly come from the developments in the head gasket area as these are now alot stronger than the were in the times of the turbo engines of a decade ago.

I wanted a little less than 9:1 just for piece of mind really and also if i were unable to get optimax or another form of super unleaded then there would be a bit of room for error so to speak, and wouldnt just det as soon as you started off slowly.

Im pretty sure that both of the management choices i have opted for but not finalised can run knock sensors, omex 600 or gotech Pro Mfi, just a case of having them mapped well... which im sure they would be, well hopefully! :lol:

Well another quick parts update....

Got a call this morn from demon tweeks to say my ARP cam and flywheel bolts had arrived so while i was there i took the oppertunity to pick my self up an oil filtet take of plate with top ports so that i can fit -8 oil lines from the block right the way through oil filter and then on to an oil cooler controlled by a thermostatic switch. Also it stops any crap getting into the engine while its being built as it is easier to cover the 2 ports on the take off rather than one big hole.

So thats the plan anyways.

no one likes my updates then :'( :lol:

Well another quick update, got the block back from machining the bores and also putting a 1/2" hole at the back of the block for the oil breather to go to.

This afternoon i have been cleaning up the gasket faces as much as possible with a bit of wet and dry and giveing the block its first coat of paint to make it look bit brighter rather than the matt black it was so have gone for some gloss black.

Anyways here is how it looked before i gave it the coat and cleaned up the faces.

The oil breather looks tiny in that pic but it is for a 1/2" breather pipe to be inserted.

the paint is halfords high temp engine enamel.

along the lines of my own build but i am a bit further on with a silver top engine bored to 2.1 with cp pistons i have the bottom end built up working on the head now, i see you may have sourced some valves from the usa could you point me in the right direction???

As for valves - i am looking into getting these off ebay america ebay valvesor have found some other valves from the UK for slightly more so going to get info on both and then choose the better of the 2.

As for an update - Well i have got the oil jets refitted, and the crank back in. All of the bolts except the ARP bolts are being thread locked in to prevent any chance of one falling out into the engine and killing it.

The ARP main studs have been fitted and can only say that the molyslip stuff that comes with them is horibe if you smear it on with your finger! :cry:

The rings have also been fitted to the pistons and they in turn have been fitted to the steel rods so they can be dropped in tomorrow and the rest of the bottom end can be built round it then, and hopefully the piles of engine bits i have got boxed new in my room will quickly disapear so i can then consentrate on the parts to build up the head.

Also took the oppertunity to fit the mocal remote filter take off plate to cover a big hole in the side of the block.

Also realised that there are a couple of parts and seals i forgot to order from ford with the last bits so got to make a list and take another trip to there at some point this week!

Anyway a couple more pics to keep you all happy. :lol:
